My Mother Wears Combat Boots -- kick-ass punk-parenting book
September 8, 2008 12:11pm
@10 / C.D.-
If you read the substance of the comment, it was fairly obviously directed at the overall trend of 'alternative' parenting, or rather, the continuation of such with a facelift from hippies to punks/hipsters.
The actual content of the book was not discussed as I obviously have not read it, but from the description you provided, it lined up quite well with what is typical of the trend I deride as shit, which is why I addressed that in my comment. Reading the rest of today's comments, it seems most others agree with me. "Alternative" parenting is by and large narcissistic garbage. Dressing your children in "alternative" gear is just the flipside of spending obscene amounts of money on designer baby clothes. Exercises in vanity.

Anyone else find this shit just as bad as the ultra-right wing, "I home school so my kids won't have to hear about the liberal conspiracies of evolution and global warming" school of parenting?
Seems to me that the job of a parent is to raise an independent, free-thinking offspring, not just mold them as your mini-me. If they don't come to their belief systems on their own, it is just indoctrination.
To me, anyone who has to self-identify through a parenting book is thinking way too much about themselves and not enough on their child. It is like putting a baby in a Misfits onesie. What is the point?

On a side note to the fool who claimed immigrants are largely illiterate or barely literate, the CIA world fact book lists the literacy rate of Mexico at 91%. Just because someone is poor doesn't mean they are stupid.

So you don't believe in giving humanitarian aid to immigrants dying in the desert? Not trying to pull a straw man, just seems that you're misinterpreting what I said.
I have absolutely no problem with immigrants, Mexican or otherwise. This is an entirely immigrant country, anyone who is "against immigrants" is a moron. I also believe in basic human rights, including humans who happen to be illegal immigrants. However citizenship is not a human right. If you offer full citizenship rights to illegal immigrants than why immigrate legally? Then you just have a completely open border society which to me is a bad idea. A government's supposed primary purpose is to 'provide' for its citizens. Part of that is trying to control the population growth rate which if grown too fast causes problems in many many areas. Yes, an imaginary line in the sand is a silly idea, but that is the way of the world. And the government that controls the areas within said lines in the sand must act to protect the interests of those inside it before they consider the needs of those outside. Often callous, but sadly, also often necessary.

@Bort: You're saying that you are a competent Linux user but had so little knowledge of windows to configure start-up programs correctly?

"Most every business thrives on illegal immigration, either directly or indirectly."
Please qualify this.
And why is being 'biased' against illegal immigration bad? I don't think anyone is in favor of illegal immigration. It is a horrible practice:
- it is a bad situation for migrants
- it has negative effects on the local populace
I'm in favor of humanitarian aid to illegal immigrants, I am against the system of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration encourages exploitation of immigrants. This guy has his heart in the right place, but not his head.
If you really want to help the people, work for reform in Mexico, work for reform in free trade pacts, work for reform in US ag policy, or work for reform in the corrupt system that feeds off of an impoverished and fearful workforce. These are macro problems, but there are micro solutions that can chip away at them.

The problem with illegal immigration is the corruption in the US. Big business (mostly agribusiness) thrives on it and puts pressure on enforcement and politicians to keep the status quo.
Here's an interesting take from the CS Monitor on the problems and how it has been dealt with historically: http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0706/p09s01-coop.html
Micky Mouse vs Mickey Mouse
October 18, 2007 8:11am
1- Do people not read before posting? This story was debunked by comment 4, 50 minutes after the original posting. Disney was a successful cartoon house but in no way a media monster.
2- Steamboat Willie was in no way 'stealing' from Buster Keaton. It is clearly a parody/homage.
3- And finally Mickey Mouse did not become popular because of his name. He became popular because of the quality of cartoons he starred in and the personality he was animated with.

Media Monkey is the way to go. It takes some time, but from my experience the automated stuff doesn't really save you any in the first place. Better to start with rough tags and let MediaMonkey fix'em up, including album art.
Not perfect, but the best I've found. Only media player I've found that is built to handle giant libraries.
