Universal Music: when we get hit with copyright damages, that's "unconstitutionally excessive"
May 14, 2008 10:31pm
there was probably some lawyer working for universal who was like "hey... hey guys. let's try and plead that the charges filed against us are 'unconstitutionally excessive' and see if we can get away with it!"

CERN photos in Nat'l. Geo: The God Particle
February 23, 2008 10:17pm
wait, which photos are by Mr. Bullock? when I click the link provided, it has the same photo you guys featured, except it says "Photograph by Peter Ginter."
And then when I click on the photo gallery, under that same image, it says "Photograph by Maximilien Brice, CERN"
a couple other photos say Mark Thiessen, but no Bullock to be found.
Giant Gort robot model for auction
February 23, 2008 10:09pm
that's funny, I was just talking with a coworker two days ago about Gort. I said to him that I watched The Day the Earth Stood Still the night before (after not having seen it in a long time) and he told me that his friend actually had an awesome model of Gort and he's put it up on eBay. I wonder if this is his auction... I'll have to ask next time I see him

Afghan war rugs in Smithsonian
February 13, 2008 11:17am
back in the early 80's, right after all this cold war hype, my dad had a pretty popular restaurant right on M street in Georgetown... (we're afghan btw)
anyway, pretty much all I remember from it was the giant rugs he had hanging from the walls. some were generic persian-like rugs, but some depicted epic scenes of buzkashi games and such... this article reminded me of that for some reason.
actually, now that I think about it, they were paintings.
oh well. nostalgia ftw
Religious police in Saudi Arabia ban "red items" as part of Valentine's Day crackdown
February 11, 2008 3:23pm
"'Sometimes we deliver the bouquets in the middle of the night or early morning, to avoid suspicion,' one florist said. "
lol, "to avoid suspicion." I guess only in Saudi Arabia this would make sense.

Waiters use nodding trick to boost restaurant tabs
January 28, 2008 9:27am
haha, this is even better than the "jedi mind trick" some of the fellows use at work.
when handing the check back to the guest, they write a small number in the top corner of the receipt and circle it, which is the expected amount of tip (20%) that should be received.
more often than not, the guest leaves 20%+

man, I could've swore I saw you (Cory) at the restaurant I work at the other night. I asked one of my coworkers if they knew who Cory Doctorow was, just to get some kind of confirmation of whether or not that guy actually looked like you, but nobody knew who you were in the first place.

Using the internet to ruin someone's life
October 12, 2007 10:42pm
wow, what a story.
I mean, I've met a few people off the internet, from message boards, but those meetings went just how I suspected (not imagined though). It was awkward. we had nothing to talk about... we didn't know each other and we never met again... but we're all still "normal" on the message that we frequent.
humans, the internet... some weird things happen in this world.
