Straight from the CCCP: the Robotron 1715

April 22, 2008 6:39am

I know, "Straight from the CCCP" sounds way catchier, but as you write, Robotron was actually a company - actually a "Kombinat" - from East Germany with headquarters in Dresden. So why do you still claim it is from the Soviet Union?

America's war on tourism: airlines to foot the bill for fingerprinting foreigners as the leave the US

@15 - "US's ridiculously lax immigration and border control" You are joking, right?

Klaus Pierre, French-German Action Hero in Training in America: Pirate Musical of Epic Fail

March 17, 2008 10:14am

Why does he insist to be german? He is obviously french and I have yet to hear one real german word (Spruedelwasser! Klaus Spruedelfisch? What is that even supposed to mean?). By the way: In the middle ages there were lots of german pirates in the north- and beltic sea.

Maps: Norway vs. Sweden (Learning America Smarter)

Oh yeah. While you obviously know the 15 german states by name or the 100 french departements?! Europeans at least don't confuse Austria with Australia.

Plus: What is it with naked saunas? Are you not supposed to be naked in any sauna? Isn't that part of the whole concept?

What Should I Do In Berlin?

Almost forgot: Some nice ruins are on top of Teufelsberg. There used to be a radar station of the Echelon network. Facts and a couple of nice pictures here: http://www.ccc.de/teufelsberg/

What Should I Do In Berlin?

December 23, 2007 6:59am

Hi Joel,
a great (and still not touristy way) to start the day is the farmers market at Winterfeldplatz. It is Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 am until 3 pm and you get there easily by U-Bahn (the station is called Nollendorfplatz, it is right in the center of the city). Afterwards you could head over to Treptower Park, there is a huge and somewhat disturbing WW2-memorial build by the soviets (check it out on Googlemaps http://tinyurl.com/2nc9mp ).
Potsdam is definitely worth a visit, but it will take a day just to get a glimpse at the main castles there (plus: to really appreciate it, you need to make your way from Castle Glienicke and Castle Pfaueninsel which is quite a hike).
Way quicker is a visit to Castle Charlottenburg, it is the biggest castle in Berlin and you get a good impression of the lifestyle the prussian kings liked. On your way back you may want to get out at U-Bahn station Bismarckstraße. About 100 meters north on Wilmersdorfer Straße is a huge Delikatessen called Rogacki, which is as native Berlin as it gets. Try the fried fish with a cucumber- and a potatoe-salad!

Book price-fixing: good, bad, or just weird?

October 25, 2007 12:10pm

@ #19: The law is about discounts. Publishers can set prices any way they want, but bookstores can't. They have to sell to the price determined by the publisher.

The Counterfeiters: superb concentration camp movie about the prisoners' dilemma

October 21, 2007 11:34am

@ Mr brown: This has nothing to do with Chandler, it is a true story. They changed it around a bit, but the story is essentially authentic.

@ Jack: I respect your anger, but you really should differentiate a bit. To say the german soldiers were all Nazis is plain wrong. Plus: Once the war started, many men were forced into service. Especially members of the communist parties were released from the concentration camps to fight in the Wehrmacht.

New Ubuntu Linux release is easy, sexy

October 18, 2007 3:25am

@ Kyle: Sorry, but you are obviously clueless.

@ PrettyBoyTim: Ever heard about different timezones? Canonical is a London based company. Feisty was released around midnight CET, therefore they have still 12 hours to go.
