As for Japan, the first method shown is dead-on. Actually the Japanese do it in an even more sharp and crisp style, if that makes any sense. And *everybody* does this, from the convenience store clerks to bank clerks, to...well, everyone. It makes my (American) style of counting look rather primitive in comparison.
