Death of the sitcom frees up 2,000 Wikipedias worth of cognitive capacity

April 27, 2008 2:07pm

#46 Shane - Good point, but can you really blame me for cringing when someone calls reasoned discussion about the creative process "elitism"? Stereotype or not, that's a *very* common tactic by the Fox Newses of the world. In my opinion its a tactic to devalue critical thinking so we won't even bother trying. In other words its really dangerous and, in my opinion, evil, especially since it seems to work so well so often.

I'm not saying Spoonie sat back in his chair and said "hey look, there's some critical thinking going on.. That might result in increased creativity, I'd better bust out some accusations of elitism before this goes too far." But (again, according to my theory) what I am saying is that the Fox Newses have used this word to shoot down any opposition so often and so effectively that the Spoonie's of the world now do their work for them completely naturally.

They do this so often that its even become a stereotype...

And by the way you're also completely correct in saying that my band sucks...

#34 Noen - Immensely well put. I was recoiling in my seat thinking about how to counter knife_spoonie's sour points but in a hundred tries I couldn't have said it better than the way you just did.

I'm surprised anyone who reads boingboing would actually use the term "elitism" as spoonie did in the first sentence of his post. Aren't we beyond that Newt Gingrich-era method of dismissing all critical thought? Who am I kidding, of course we're not.

I heard "Untitled 2" is going to be about a steampunk diy Disney Ride made out of really interesting couches released under the creative commons...

Public relations-officer for Southern Illinois University College Republicans sends misogynistic hate mail and is forced to resign

Well for someone who has no clue how to use a comma or period, you have to admit the guy spells pretty well....

And why'd they redact the website? I'd love to see what websites idiots like that look to for guidance.

Reminds me of a gag in that show Arrested Development where someone started a business showing estimations of what your baby will look like as an adult. All the newborn babies were rendered as washed out dreary and miserable looking 60 year olds....

Clothing designed to fight back against intentionally uncomfortable furniture

April 18, 2008 1:11am

I didn't read past comment #20 or so, but definitely surprised to see all the rancor. Come on people, this is a *joke*. And a really good one in my opinion. And it makes all kinds of funny comments (to me at least) about humanity overcoming institutions. I can't help but be reminded of the classic cartoon where a guy is sitting on a city bench watching a flower grow through a crack in the sidewalk.

And seriously, to the people yelling about how "this isn't art", lighten up.

Time-lapse videos as impressionist paintings

April 14, 2008 10:36am

I'm surprised there are so many negative comments on this. Come on, its a cool effect, and new to me. I agree that Photoshop filters on their own can be annoying but this is well done and a nice idea. Besides, timelapses are always interesting, and this is a good subject for one.

Search youtube for his timelapse of a sunset, absolutely beautiful.

Circuit City does $12K worth of damage to a car while installing a GPS, won't pay up

March 31, 2008 2:36am

Personally I think the real scandal here is that Honda won't let you splice wires on your own car. The install was clearly shoddy, but no way was it $12k worth of shoddy, and there's almost no way it was so shoddy that its a fire hazard. I mean come on, the wires are either in danger of shorting out or they're not, and from watching the video in the link I'd say the splices look clean and, dare I say it, professional. I see that the diagnostic note says the wires were shorting out, but I don't believe a word of it since that note also quotes 5 hours of "diagnostic" work.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the installer should have used that adaptor, but come on people, hacking up car wiring for stereos and whatnot is all part of owning a car, and if you've ever had anything installed by a car audio shop, they likely did quite a bit of hacking.

This is the car stereo equivalent of getting into a parking lot fender bender and having a $5,000 bill, none of which you'll pay for.

Rockbox open jukebox firmware looking for student hackers to "spend Google's money"

March 27, 2008 8:40am

I've been a Rockbox user since it first became viable for my old Archos Jukebox. I've used it religiously on various Archos hardware over the years, and recently bought an iPod Classic (the new one) and have to say that it might be a nice piece of eye candy, but compared to a device running Rockbox its simply retarded. Rockbox does a great job of letting you create playlists, where the iPod just sucks at it. Yes I know all about the "on the go" stuff, but try reordering your playlist. Hell, try queueing up a song to play next even though you have a bunch of other songs queued up....

Poll any 10 iPod users and ask how they use their iPods and I'd bet at least 9 use it mostly on shuffle mode, or they play entire albums, both of which are relatively passive listening. Poll any 10 Rockbox users and I'd guess almost all will say they create playlists on the fly, and with great precision, changing what they'll hear next based on the mood created by the last song. Try doing that on an iPod...

Unfortunately Rockbox doesn't yet (and might not ever) run on the new iPod Classics though. Leave it to Apple to intentionally make things more difficult for a project trying to add functionality to their products.

Sex offender ordered to keep warning signs on car and house

March 26, 2008 7:47pm

I too take what future generations will call the "Mike8787ian" view on this, with an addendum: the ability to mark people as sex offenders as part of the punishment is quite a lot of power, and we all know power gets abused.

For example, there's a rest stop just south of South Francisco on the 280 that is apparently a gay hookup spot. The police put up signs saying "if you're caught having sex here you'll be prosecuted as a sex offender". Hmm, two adults having consensual sex are sex offenders??? Furthermore, have a look at the sex offender website recently? Some of the folks are convicted of "indecent exposure", which could easily include pissing on a tree in public.

I'm not saying sex offenders don't exist, but I do think branding people as sex offenders is a gargantuan amount of power that should be closely watched and regulated.

Runnin' With the Beatles

March 10, 2008 4:13pm

Wow some tough critics here. I loved it but agree that DLR was a bit too high in the mix. But some very interesting juxtapositions. And placing them both convincingly on the same stage never gets old to me.

Good lord that was funny.

Biggie Hendrix Experience

March 7, 2008 8:13pm

I agree with Cycle23. I love each artist, and love the way they mix together, but the mixer could have done a *much* better job of showcasing Jimi.

My $.02 is there's a real appreciation here for Biggie, most of his best songs are here, but not much for Jimi. All the Jimi songs are really obvious, and there's rarely more than a bar repeated over and over.

That's not to say I don't like this, it's great. But could be greater.

Urinal graffiti on a piss-wall

March 1, 2008 10:21pm

Awesome!

I live a block or two away from these and the crackheads love to piss on our building's door. The piss flows under the door and makes a nice little pool inside where it becomes a real joy to clean up. A few years ago I put up a sign that said "Danger! High voltage! Don't piss here!", which completely solved the problem as long as the sign lasted....

TSA at LAX still requiring air travelers to remove all electronics?

February 13, 2008 11:15pm

I've flown out of SFO twice in the last week, didn't have to remove cameras or cables or label maker or other little gizmos. Just laptops.

Did see one awesomely funny sight in Chicago: the TSA guys were in a meeting in the corner when some guy got flagged for "additional scrutiny" (I love that phrase) by one of the minions covering the gate. He got coralled into a little plexiglass cage where everyone could openly stare at him. Since the meeting was going on he had to stand in there (no seats) for probably 10 minutes while they finished. I wish I'd have filmed it, was oddly hilarious.

I'd definitely add this reason for not torturing: if you torture their people when you capture them, they'll probably torture your people when they capture yours.

Anonymous Message to Pastafarianism / Leaked FSM video

Both clips are totally hilarious. So many great lines, but I think my current favorite is "you either believe in the Spaghet-deity, or you believe in the Spaghet-deidont. Think about that."

Am I the only one who finds it odd that 7.10 is newer than 7.4?

Birth of the cup-holder, 1950

Fair use for the 21st century: if it adds value, it's fair; if it substitutes, it's not

January 17, 2008 12:51am

#4: all the points #3 made apply against your argument as well: satire is often used in a $$$ making venture, reviews often are, etc. And if you use money making potential for the copyright holder as a mitigating factor, then again that's giving them leverage against negative publicity.

Tom Cruise's Scientology video -- and Gawker's legal battle to host it

January 17, 2008 12:41am

#1: Would you say the same thing if he were talking about Christianity instead of Scientology? I say this is just garden variety fanaticism, and hey, it appears to be working for him, so who am I to judge.

Besides, at least he appears to honestly believe his spiel unlike, for example, Pastor Ted...

Great choice of shirts. Nothing says "ancient Chinese mysticism" like a short-sleeved button down with an awkwardly placed top button.
