Arrests in fake Craigslist "everything must go" ad rip-off
April 2, 2008 5:58am
@8: No they should not. Are they dumb for just showing up without the home-owner being present and taking things at that point? Yes. But I'm sure greed took over when one person was waiting and 5 cars pulled up *enter the greed zone*. It would have been more intelligent if someone called the local Sheriff to make sure it was legit, but they did not. And hindsight is always 20/20 so do not assume that you would have acted differently in the same situation (remember you are a comp savvy type who have read stories resembling this, you are not a rural Oregonian)
Either way, this is not surveillance, it's "you robbed a house and left foot-prints all the way back to your place". I posted in the previous thread that I hoped the people responsible did it from their home comp, and wahoo! I was correct in my assumption of human stupidity.
Fake Craigslist "everything must go" ad costs man pretty much everything
March 25, 2008 5:44am
wow... my work would probably bar any links that actually came up but I'm sure I've heard of this happening before.
I really hope the person who posted the add was dumb enough to do it from their home comp. PLEASE!!!!!

being a native of the SF Bay Area I always thought Lombard Street was more crooked, and after reading a bit I guess I'm still confused. Vermont has less turns? I guess it'll take some that still lives there to inform me of the difference.
State Department employees canned for snooping in Obama's passport records
March 21, 2008 5:38am
what the hell are you talking about??!! I may agree that the entire current administration is a complete FAILURE and should be brought up on war crimes charges, etc... but...
The system they have in place DID work, that is why the manager of the individuals in question was alerted to their access of the files (since Obama is a high profile person) and the people were fired. The only reason this is becoming a bigger issue is because that manager didn't pass the information up to higher levels. Not to mention the fact that passport files contain nothing that is not already obtainable by other LEGAL means. If someone is searching those files for documents that will create fire-storms then they are not intelligent.

Sounds like a story from the by-gone days of aviation!

very true, but also very dumb. That was a time when there were far fewer people in the sky. allowing things like this to happen in a situation when it is necessary is allowable, but for something like this the father should lose his license to fly or atleast have it suspended for a year. Next we'll be seeing some dude do this because his wife really needed to go to the bathroom.

I noticed that same thing. I am constantly amazed on a daily basis at the amount of people who appear to not have a solid grasp on the language of the country they grew up in.
Library built into a staircase
February 20, 2008 5:19am
If you like your books I would assume that you wouldn't do this, though the extended treds do make this feasible. I have a good amount of literature in my home, but I wouldn't place them where the normal walking of a human or animal would toss grime, sand, possible water, etc... against their sides. Not to mention if someone stepped to deeply they could easily scalp a Seven Pillars of Wisdom or one of my copies of LoTR.

I agree with Takuan:
Further, I am not sure I could respect a kilt wearer unless they were properly "traditional"
It's like wearing a Utiliyamika. If you're not being traditional with it, or wearing it at a Renaissance Fair then you're just trying to catch attention.
I also think people should think twice before making statements like "chicks dig it".
Laser-cut steel "flat" shelving you bend to suit
January 15, 2008 5:39am
agree with TAKUAN.
How much? For a shelf that I have to still bend myself and slice my palms open in a few places?
No thanks.
A nice idea for the masses, and someone making a shitload of money off of an idea they're trying to load off as being a good idea are two different things.
It appears here that they're offloading the $$$ that would have had to been spent on shipping, if it was a totally constructed shelf, directly into the price and then trying to convince the consuming masses that it's cool and mod.
again, no thanks. I'll stick to my IKEA shelves
Netflix and HD: a DRM disaster that costs you your videos and control of your hardware
January 3, 2008 6:31am
Agree with #5 Krisjohn. I use Netflix for what it's worth, and the only reason I stream a movie is to preview it before actually wasting a rental on it.
Seriously read a book people. I think stats say something like 50% of people never read a book again once they get out of college, and for those that never went to college it rises to 70%.
buy what you can without DRM, and ignore or steal the rest.

Rogers ISP of Canada breaks into your browsing session to tell you off for using the net too much
December 11, 2007 6:01am
@sardion2000
if you're watching 30G of youtube in one week then you need to step outside and get some sun.
I can usually convert a 2.5 hr video down to 1GB at a very very good quality. So using this as a benchmark I would say that in order to use 30GB of traffic in 1 week you would have to had spent 75 hours watching youtube. Furthermore, youtube vids are far lower quality than the video I produce so I might up that hour count to 100. QED
I seriously doubt your 30Gigs in a week data is accurate. However, feel free to prove me wrong.

Rogers ISP of Canada breaks into your browsing session to tell you off for using the net too much

seriously what are you using 56 GB a month doing? Not that I don't think unlimited should mean unlimited but this begs the question.
I trade in a lot of free flac and SHN concerts and I don't approach that type of traffic size.
Universal Music CEO: Record industry can't tell when geeks are lying to us about technology
November 27, 2007 5:44am
seriously #2, shame on that type of comment, and yay or #7 for saying what I wanted to so perfectly.
Either way, this is a perfect example of why he should be fired. If you're in charge of a project (in this case project = Universal Music), and you don't understand the marketplace, then you should not have your job. If someone gave you 12 years to understand a new form of industry and that wasn't enough time to see how you could adapt and change then you should quit and go sit on a beach somewhere.

I've always pondered whether that would be the ultimate answer to all of our nuc waste. However, don't you just have a 2nd thought, even a small one, that we should go messing around with our source of heat, light, and life? I'm sorry, but I could never stand behind the idea of sending anything our Star.

Comcast actively blocks P2P traffic
October 19, 2007 9:30am
uh..... i'm kinda shocked BB was so slow on the pickup of this.
either way, what they're doing amounts to breaking the law since they're impersonating a particular person/IP while conversing with the target IP.
most people look forward to FIOS in their area to get away from comCRAP, but as of now most of us have to suffer through it. And I'm saying this from the point of view of a concert music trader on this great sea of tubes, so their actions hurt the legal traffic as well.

Iconic horror movie scream

I was reminded of this particular scream when over the weekend camping I put the idea in a friend's head to scare his girlfriend while she was walking with a friend.
i could hear the scream from such a wonderful distance away and immediately thought of this particular scream and how close they were. Good times.

seriously! it's not like the cops are just walking into random peoples houses and searching them. They served the dude a warrant on an unrelated charge which gives them the right to search his premises. This is no different than the dude who called the fire Dept when his house was on fire only to be arrested when 45 pot plants were found in his house.

I hope the wink means that you're saying this in Jest BQAggie87. The fact of the matter with the previous case you and the submitted of the above story both bring up is that the Sub teacher in question was using a computer at the school that had absolutely no security on it and the thing was riddled with p0rnware. And beyond that fact it was st00pid of her to be charged anyways, so it might be best if they don't charge this dude so that she has some rights to stand on.

Either way, I remember playing this a long while ago and it was awesome; but it was also pretty difficult to compromise enough so that you win. I think it catches the McIndustry very well.

@13: You are correct for the sub-set regarding their refusal to return something they know is stolen. However your broad comment of "People that took stuff from his house should be arrested also" does not stipulate that.
And again, do not assume you would not have acted in a similar manner if you were in the same situation. You may have a different perspective from where you sit, and being able to look at this in hindsight.
It's a sad situation in any regard. I hope the guy gets his stuff back and I hope the two people arrested are the ones charged with the theft of everything that was taken since their actions caused the greed-storm.
