With the South I get the sense it goes further than simply talking funny. Stephen Colbert, for instance, grew up in North Carolina and said he dropped his southern accent because it was national television shorthand for stupid. When you make a plastic surgery joke, it is, like the surgery itself, superficial. Making fun of the way Southerners talk/live/love jesus (which represent a collection of stereotypes) all leads up to making fun of a presumed ignorance or stupidity, which is a much more serious insult than "teehee, you talk funny" or "you have more plastic than face now, you do realize that?"

also, i don't know why everyone's taking this poor sheriff to task. if the terrorists bombed graceland, it would be a HUGE psychological victory - and RV sales would tank, as old people across the midsouth would no longer have a reason to sightsee.

i agree that this is ridiculous and should meet with civil disobedience, but i'd like to point out the guard wasn't actually trying to steal his camera - they watch you delete the picture, and then you continue on.

happened to me in westminster abbey. thought about responding to the steward (?) in french and wandering away.

i find not being allowed to photograph westminster abbey more ludicrous than the spitalfields thing, because they charge you 10 pounds to walk in the door.

common practice (at least where i go to school) is to place a voting center directly on campus. no, 7 miles is not a long distance, but fewer college students will vote if they have to drive 7 miles instead of simply popping into the university center on their way to class, casting their vote, and getting on with their day.

and the goal of an effective protest is to create some sort of disruption to garner attention, and in preventing many, many people from getting places on time they've done just that.

I'm certainly a dabbler in this area so perhaps I'm missing some hidden subtlety, but it's completely baffling to me that anyone that professes even a rudimentary understanding of evolution could posit a thesis that seems to assert that change leads to evolutionary stagnation and that stagnation leads to evolutionary change. change necessitates adaptation, change DRIVES evolution.

also, how can he POSSIBLY find a control to validate his unfounded assertion that evolution is at a standstill?
