Chavez to USA: "Shove your terror list"

March 15, 2008 2:33pm

"...shove it in their pocket"

I don't think that word means what he thinks it means.

Alleged CD-bootlegger abandoned in solitary jail cell, left to drink own urine

March 11, 2008 10:09pm

I can't believe that, in 2008, there is a person in a position of authority who believes it is appropriate to lock someone in solitary fucking confinement for bootlegging CDs.

Air Force Blocks Access to Many Blogs

February 27, 2008 8:19pm

I've heard from some members of the military who can't read my blog from Iraq or Afghanistan, because it's censored by the DoD.

Brilliant move there, Pentagon. Freedom is on the march!

Bush administration wants Europeans' family details, the right to put armed officials on European planes, and a pre-approval for European visitors

February 20, 2008 1:12pm

Dear George W. Bush,

Go fuck yourself, asshole. When you're done, stop pissing off the rest of the world and acting like you run the whole goddamn planet.

Signed,

An American who is sick and tired of being ashamed of his country.

Dear Europe,

So sorry about this. We tried to send this joker back to Texas a few years ago, but . . . well, you know what happened.

Signed,

An American who is hoping you'll give us another chance.

Unboxing an Apple IIc

February 4, 2008 10:08pm

If this made you thirsty for your classic Apple computer, and you're a Mac user, you will likely lose your shit when you play with http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/VirtualII/

Windows (or Parallels) users may also lose their shit with the online Apple ][ emulator: http://www.virtualapple.org/

Fine news

February 3, 2008 10:42am

Congratulations, Cory! Good luck tracking down baby-sized goggles and capes.

Man gets disorderly conduct charge for writing vulgar message on check

January 15, 2008 1:45pm

That said, it's kind of prickish to write "fuck you" to the clerks who didn't give you the ticket and had nothing to do with your case.

If I wrote "fuck you" on a stupid parking ticket check, it certainly wouldn't be directed toward a clerk who opened it. It would be directed toward the stupid system that uses parking tickets to generate revenue for the city.

So, yeah, fuck them.

SimCity goes free software

January 12, 2008 2:57pm

The best thing I learned from SimCity (other than how to deal with a monster attack) stays with me to this day: the only way you can ease traffic congestion is to build more effective mass transportation. If you just build more roads, they'll just fill up with more cars.

Now that it's open source, I think I'll send a copy to everyone in government here in Los Angeles, so they can understand why our city is such a clusterfuck of constant traffic misery, and why our metro is such a joke.

Portal in LEGO

December 28, 2007 8:41am

I'm making a note here:
HUGE SUCCESS.

It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Texas evacuees subject to criminal checks

December 20, 2007 7:14pm

Oh yeah, this is going to work out just great.

Because, you know, law enforcement never fucks up. Certainly not during a massive disaster requiring the evacuation of thousands of people.

But, uh, it's all about The Children, so we can all stop asking questions, now.

Stack of intriguing books from Feral House and Process Media

December 14, 2007 11:26am

I'd just like to add my voice to the chorus of readers who see Hoagland as a crackpot bullshit artist who has zero credibility.

The guy's a joke.

Thank you for your kind attention.

US gov't to British court: We can kidnap Brits, it's legal

December 2, 2007 11:33am

I would just like to remind the entire planet that because I happen to live in America, it doesn't mean I agree with America. You can hate America all you want, but be sure to focus that anger in the appropriate direction(s).

I think someone needs to build a website where Americans who feel this way (as I do) can sign their names, and make it clear to the rest of the world that we're doing the best we can, via our totally broken and corrupt political process, to take our country back from these fascists.

Science Fiction Writers of America reinstates E-Piracy Committee -- new name, same chairman

November 30, 2007 10:12am

This never would have happened if Scalzi was president.

Time's Joe Klein gets everything wrong in column about NSA domestic spying

November 22, 2007 2:36pm

I think he'd make a hell of a blogger, though, if he can make that transition. Until he escapes the expectations of truth which hound all mainstream media types, he'll never be able to properly express himself.

Why? Because bloggers don't have an expectation of truth? Let's not let the behavior of idiots like Michelle Malkin and the crew at Powerline define what is and isn't acceptable for bloggers.

Josh Marshall, Glenn Greenwald and Ryan Singel (who wrote TFA) immediately come to mind as examples of bloggers who are ethical, reliable, and credible. You'll also note that they're not Bush loyalists, which isn't a coincidence.

Star Trek's cheesy creatures

November 22, 2007 10:51am

I feel a certain sense of ownership for Star Trek that extends beyond that of your typical Trekkie (though I was a life-long Trekkie before I worked on TNG) and I had very high hopes for these remasters.

However, I have to agree almost entirely with David B. While I don't have as much of a problem with the "clean up" as he does, the new CGI effects are absolutely abominable. The Enterprise shots, especially, look like they were done with equipment and aesthetics from 1995, and I found them so distracting, I told my DVR to stop recording the new HD episodes.

Star Trek stop-motion fanimation from mid '70s

October 23, 2007 12:23pm

This is one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen online.

The sounds of the projector, the early chyron overlays, the 70s animation, and this guy's obvious love of Star Trek filled me with joy.

His page at tripod (which won't survive a boingboinging, so let's just keep it in the comments, okay?) is filled with even more wonderful stuff, like how and why he made it, and links to several different stop motion animated projects he did.

Paul Allen Telescope Array / Mark and the Boing Box

October 11, 2007 11:21am

New intro + boingbox FTW.

Fall TV Shows/Wil Wheaton

October 10, 2007 10:16am

@Xeni: You should totally get Mark to MAKE a hybrid Unicorn and Kitten Death Robot!!

ZOMG!

Fall TV Shows/Wil Wheaton

October 10, 2007 9:13am

Yeah, we cut the extended Goatse section of the interview and replaced it with the far more offensive Osprey.

Visions of the Future/Listography

October 2, 2007 9:16pm

Awesome.

Trekker v Furry bowl-off pics

September 30, 2007 8:03pm

Based on the hundreds of people who have gotten pissed at me for misusing the terms "Trekkie" and "Trekker," I feel obligated to point out that the Klingons involved here are clearly Trekkies.

Titan missile silo for sale

September 27, 2007 8:59pm

Any real estate agent who wants $10K in escrow before showing a property, and won't even show *pictures* of the property is a douchebag.

In fact, the only bigger douchebag is the douchebag who give this douchebag the $10K.

Alaska Airlines will soon offer wireless internet

September 20, 2007 8:55pm

I feel stupid for wondering about this, but I'm sure someone reading Boingboing can enlighten me: if it's so deadly dangerous for us to have cell phones turned on while we fly, and if I have to turn off the wireless functionality on my PSP or NintendoDS while I fly, how exactly can we use wireless internet connections on our laptops?

Could it be that not letting us use electronic devices is just a bunch of FUD? Or is the risk as real as 3.1 ounces of deadly shampoo?

TSA: war on coffee successful, boxcutters not so much

September 18, 2007 4:07pm

Thank the FSM he didn't have more than three ounces of liquid to combine with this box cutter! Now that would be a deadly combination.

The Week's briefing on the NSA

August 31, 2007 1:42pm

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, my friends and I would regularly send each other lists of keywords designed to trigger Echelon.

We thought it was hilarious agitprop back then, but in these days of extraordinary rendition, creepy TSA detentions at airports, and the suspension of habeus corpus whenever King George chokes on a pretzel, it seems like less fun than it once was.

However, I would like to say . . .

Explosives, guns, assassination, conspiracy, primers, detonators, initiators, main charge, nuclear charges, ambush, sniping, motorcade, IRS, BATF, jtf-6, mjtf, hrt, srt, hostages, munitions, weapons, TNT, rdx, amfo, hmtd, picric acid.

Thank you.

Science Fiction Writers of America abuses the DMCA

August 31, 2007 1:25pm

@83: SFWA != all SF writers, and it's pretty clear that this latest idiocy from Burt doesn't represent the wishes or intentions of several SFWA members.

Science Fiction Writers of America abuses the DMCA

August 31, 2007 12:59am

So SFWA has ripped a page from the book of the RIAA and MPAA, and tried to follow in their footsteps.

Brilliant. And by "brilliant," I mean idiots.

This never would have happened if John Scalzi were president.

No friends yet.
