Drive-in movie theater gallery

June 6, 2008 2:41am

There's actually 3 Drive-In theaters within 30 miles of here. One outlasted the mall theatre, so for awhile, the drive-in was the only place to see the latest releases. They're running Indy 4 and Iron Man as a double feature this week.

Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

April 24, 2008 6:57am

Sandals have to count as 'almost barefoot' as in you can enter stores wearing them. I get a cheap $9 pair that lasts a season, the cork and materials take the abuse and my feet don't generate toxic fumes. I tried the fancy Birkenstickershocks but they didn't last any longer, at the cost of 10 of my cheapo clones. Maybe I got the wrong ones, but Birken can send me a durable pair gratis and I'll change my tune if they last >year.

Time-lapse video of man trapped in an elevator for 41 hours

April 15, 2008 8:11pm

I was visiting underground Atlanta (a kind of shopping mall thing) when I heard the elevator bell ringing in a hallway.. Nobody else noticed it. I went over to the elevator, pushed the button, the door opened.

A disheveled man, quite relieved, stumbled out of the elevator. "I've been in there for over an hour!" he said. Again, this was a busy mall, lots of people, all of whom had ignored the elevator bell that the guy had been ringing for an hour.

I don't know why the door wouldn't open, nor why my pressing the elevator button opened the door, but either way, it was a sad situation.

Banks refuse to take title on repossessed crappy houses

Sounds like Batman will be plenty busy. Those villans are always setting up in some abandoned building..

Chip and PIN terminals pwned

February 28, 2008 10:58am

I love the last bit of the video with the spokesperson .. "There is no vulnerabilities".. Yes, there is, we bloody well just showed it. "There is no wide-scale fraud" ..So, there is a bit of it? "All systems have inherent vulnerabilities".. So, you're saying there are flaws? "No."

I've installed PIN pads for retailers in the US. There is _no_ security protocol in regards to putting that system in. Just run a cable from the pad to the register PC. Drill a hole in the counter if there isn't one. That's it. I don't even have to show a photo id to the store manager when I come in to change out systems.

Had no idea what a gold mine I was sitting on!

Be assured, though, I'm an honest tech. I like non-jail living and my job.

Everyone should be aware of anything unusual about a card system, one too many menu entries, a mag reader strapped to the side with electrical tape..

If in doubt, you can always hand the card to the clerk for them to run the card through their terminal's card reader.. Most modern point-of-systems have this redundancy.

I'm glad this information is getting out there. A lot of these retailing systems do 'just enough' to provide at least the appearence of security.

And..

More publicity means they might decide to change out the insecure systems, which means they'll hire me to put them in= win for me!

Black Mustang Club calendar is go, Ford releases images under Creative Commons -- a he said/she said blow-by-blow

January 25, 2008 10:35am

There's some commercial out there with someone driving a classic '65 Mustang. The thing one notices as they pull up is that the horse in the grille has been covered with black cloth. Thank goodness they did that or I would have bought their product thinking they produced Ford Mustangs!

Quicktime DRM + After Effects = misery for filmmakers

January 22, 2008 8:34pm

Thank you BB! I use After Effects 6.5 and managed to reproduce the 10 minute error. Rolled back to 7.31 using Apple's own installer package and http://www.charlessoft.com/ Pacifist. Just open the package with Pacifist and let it do its dirty work (a few dialogs come up, allow it to replace the files) and reboot.

Nothing broke and it unbroke AE, as I rendered a 20:06 video just to be sure. I'm running 10.4 and a PPC G4, so there may be other issues with Leopard's variant (someone on the thread said this trick didn't work for them)

Pretty much soured me on the rental thing. Can't rent movies with 7.31 and probably won't ever.

Nice Frank Zappa references; "Pick Me I'm Clean" and "Frogs with Dirty Little Lips" ..
