The lost NY Times steampunk feature
May 9, 2008 2:26pm
Oh it's great to see this see the light of day! I spent a very pleasant afternoon with Richard and his photog in my shop last year.
Richard was on to this Steampunk thing way ahead of the others.
#2 - you know, I felt that way at first too, but I'm starting to like some of the gears-as-decoration I see.

DAN@#1:
Thank you for recognizing that as a mis-quote! I work with scientists and they have been ranking on me since I walked in the door this morning.
Fact is though, if you look at Google Trends now, its pretty linear.
Scott Beale's Maker Faire photos
May 5, 2008 10:29pm
OMGOMGOMG! this was my first Maker Faire and it was sublime! There was this total sense of belonging, of being completely surrounded by folks I understood and who understood me! I did not want it to end!
iamcantaloupe@#1: yeah I did the total fanboy thing to!
Abney Park's vacuum-tube violin mod
May 5, 2008 10:10pm
I saw this in person on Saturday shortly before I introduced the band on the main stage at Maker Faire - it is in fact an electric violin and it's been modded in a way that's completely reversible - all of the sections are modular and fit into the body like some amazing puzzle. The cloth insulated cable is all vintage and it looks just like the innards of all of the 50+ year old test equipment I've poked into. Molly did an amazing job putting this together, and it sounded freak'n awesome Saturday night!

TAKUAN - You'd be welcome in my workshop anytime!
TERESA - You've read Steam Bird! what a fun book - I recommend it for any one who's into any aspect of steam with or without the punk.
Clockwork cufflinks

I bought a clockwork brooch from Rivkasmom as a present for my sister a few months ago - it was very well received! Gorgeous work!

Jake von Slatt's video response to steampunk monologue
April 7, 2008 7:17am
I have met a lot of people who style themselves SteamPunk over the past year, both on-line and in person. The only common trait of all of the SteamPunks I've met is that they have been kind and friendly people. They are an incredibly varied lot and making generalizations about them is not only foolish, but simply not possible.

Woman bites dog
April 4, 2008 2:35pm
Dogs show dominance by biting on the nose - I did that once to a big German Shepard that had my dog by the throat and would not let go. When your friend is in trouble you just do it, Bravo lady!
Passively Cooled PC Uses Giant Heat Sink for a Case

OK, I clicked through and actually read the article, I take back the "expensive" comment - the guy's a Maker Mench!
Passively Cooled PC Uses Giant Heat Sink for a Case
March 6, 2008 7:42am
That looks expensive!
I made one a couple of years ago with Home Depot parts:

I did have to add one fan running at half voltage to cool the Northbridge, but the CPU and PSU were cooled purely through the Thermosiphon effect.

Things that have always been true for the class of 2011
February 1, 2008 7:34pm
#20 Wow, I had almost forgotten about BSF^2A! I was a member the first year we had our own special interest housing - I'm not sure that was a good idea on the part of the administration. ;-)
do you mean:
63. Avatars have nothing to do with Hindu deities.
I think he's reffering to Avatars of the forum and MMORPG world type.
#21 - for the last time it does have a steam engine to be steampunk . . oh . . .sorry . .wrong thread.
Things that have always been true for the class of 2011

These lists are intended to give faculty a snapshot of the mindset of incoming students, and they do that well. Frankly, I'm surprised at the nit-picking.
My only regret is that I didn't take a class with Tom McBride when I was at Beloit.
We need a different copyright for individuals
January 29, 2008 6:28am
This is interesting! I was just talking about something similar in an interview I'm doing with the folks over at Bostodelphia.
What I've been looking for is a license that would allow individual artisans to copy and sell my designs but bar corporations from doing so.
I think I've settled on a Creative Commons, Non-commercial, Attribution, Share-alike license and I'll use the extensibility of the CC license to add a specific commercial exception for individual craftspeople.

Jake von Slatt's Victorian RV -- video tour
January 14, 2008 5:55pm
Make it Victorian that lived through the decades since and got painted, and renovated so there's some mid-century and '70s stuff too - that was the concept, a New England "camp" that's been in the family for generations.

What would it be like to be the last person on Earth?
January 4, 2008 12:44pm
I remember reading Earth Abides in high school, back when we were all sure that we would be living in a post-apocalyptic world by now.
Dammit, Where's my cow skinned covered jet car!
Video of rotating boat wheel
January 2, 2008 11:35am
I've piloted a 65' narrow boat through the Falkirk wheel - it's pretty awesome when standing on the deck of a boat as it's lifted 5 stories into the air to see the Scottish countryside spread out before you.
Steampunk fashion: zeppelin sky-hat
January 2, 2008 6:46am
This is just such a delightful creation! Often steampunk fashion tends toward the gothy but this dieselpunk fantasy is a new direction and I like it.

Molly's going to be doing a step by step write-up of the headphone mod for a guest-artist spot on the Steampunk Workshop site.
The story should be up sometime in January so check in on http://steampunkworkshop.com and see how to make your own pair of "shanks"!
New Disneyland monorails

Why the hell can't I ride one of these to work and were the F&%$ is my jet pack!?
@XENU - unless things have changed you can ride up front with the driver, at least in Orlando. Just get in the first stall and they'll often let a few people into the drivers compartment as the last of the passengers are boarding the train.
Zip Tie Ring by Natalia Gomensoro
December 18, 2007 7:43am
I'm torn, I can understand the desire of the artist to expose the texture, but a functional MRI of my brain when I look at it would read a flashing "WRONG".
Now the hose-clamp ring is made of 100% sterling silver win!
Steve Jobs (and not Woz) to come to Epcot's Spaceship Earth
December 2, 2007 4:46am
Dammit, I wish Disney wouldn't "freshen" up their rides. I would give anything to experience "If you had Wings" or "Carousel of Progress" or "Journey to Mars" from the original DW Tomorrowland again.
Jobs? Better then Gates, I suppose. But if we are talking History of Communication shouldn't it be Cerf & Kahn?

Jeff@#11 - you said:
'A fashion statement like that had more to do with men controlling women, keeping them all bound up and looking "better."'
You know, that was my take on it originally, but it's kinda not true. I'm not really qualified to comment much beyond that - but go talk to some women who are into corsetry, I guarantee you'll find it interesting.
