Videos of the worst pop songs ever
May 1, 2008 10:26am
I love a lot of these songs. Who doesn't like a little cheeze now and then. some of these are great simply for the karaoke opportunities.
My #1 and #2 most hated songs are "What I like about You" by The Romantics and "We Built this City" by Starship.
Compendium of "They do it with..." one-liners

Swimmers do it in the lanes is missing! (one of my aquatic club teammates had that shirt back in the late 1970s.)

michaler mentioned the Portland taco trucks, but most of our food carts are actually parked in parking lots where they rent space from the owner.
Photo of honor system at bookstore in Ojai, CA
April 14, 2008 12:26pm
I remember buying a quartz crystal on the honor system. The best part was the quartz was at the top of a hill, and the quarter you dropped into the slot rolled through a very long pipe to the bottom, making a very pleasant plinking sound as it went down.
Free Range Kids, blog for raising kids without being freaked out about safety all the time
April 12, 2008 11:12am
My biggest fear while letting my kid out of my sight are the many cars that speed down our street rather then pedophiles and kidnappers.
Vegan strippers
March 27, 2008 12:16pm
The Pirate's Tavern had pretty terrible food and the restaurant is way way way out of town. It makes more sense to get a vegan meal at Paradox and then go to Sassys.
Washing machine/toilet combo
March 24, 2008 4:57pm
Why couldn't the door to the washer be on the side to prevent the dreaded "is it a poo or just a brown sock" event?
Newman100, you can buy a sink that retrofits to the top of your toilet from the Real Goods catalog. Hand washing water is used to for flushing.
It's Raining McCain (video)
March 23, 2008 9:50am
The only salvation from that horrible song was in the "related video" sidebar: Michele McCain sings It's Raining Men(probably NSFW, hot pants and bad quality audio.) with hot muscular nearly-naked dancing boys
Artist chided for wrapping street art in black cloth
March 22, 2008 9:06am
"Baobab", a piece of pedestrian art near my house has been covered in plastic wrap for the past three (or is it 4?) years because it has leaked from the day it was installed and the tiles on it are in danger of falling off! (Many already have.)
At one point there was a plywood box around the base which my neighbor wrote slogans on (this isn't art it's an eyesore) after he got sick of the plastic wrap flapping in the wind. The RACC eventually painted the box and then removed it when they upgraded their plastic wrap from generic to Saran (tm).
I'd be happy if Stetler came to Portland and wrapped this thing in Black cloth!

There are easier ways to mash a turnip!

What about Robert Lopez, who put cat ear mites into his ears? At least he won an IgNobel!
Arizona students stage hug-a-thon to protest 2-second hug rule detentions

In the early 1980s, at our middle school, we were banned from singing the Olivia Newton John song "Physical." Clearly, that's the reason we're all fat now.

Amy Winehouse? maybe her mom? or maybe Amy from the future (after she starts eating and gets implants.
Does famous designer read CRAFT?
March 3, 2008 12:42pm
For runway shows, often very specific footwear is created. Perhaps Chalayan had the maker of the knitted boots make some for his runway show. Or maybe he had them made by someone who was inspired by CRAFT.
If you look at the detail shots on style.com, you'll see the boots the jackets as well. They appear to be woven out of the the threads (chenille?) from the jacket (a la Chanel's famous braid)
In fashion, designers steal from the people, and the people (seamstresses and sewists) steal from the designers!

How is Microsoft shilling their software any different than MONSANTO shilling their plastics?
Swedish couple fined for naming their child "Brfxxccxxmnpcccclll mmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116"
February 20, 2008 11:30am
I think they should allow the parents to name their kid that as long as they can still spell it after having several drinks! I'm pretty sure that even if I was totally drunk, I could still spell my kid's very nice traditional Swedish name.

New Arbitrary TSA requirement: all electronics out of your bag (cables, too)
February 1, 2008 10:08am
It's so frustrating not knowing what the rules are. On one flight, the DVD player in the backpack was fine, the return flight, we got a scolding for not taking it out. I suspect some of that was the boredom of working at ABQ.

a few years ago, some friends ran their pirate flag up the flagpole on the ferry going between Port Angeles and Victoria, BC. Even that brazen bit of jackassery didn't result in a call to the FBI, simply a stern (ha ha!) talking to by the Captain.
