Italian tourist detained by Homeland Security for visiting his American girlfriend

May 15, 2008 2:06pm

"I read something in the paper this morning (here in Toronto) that said over 1000 people applied for asylum in Canada, from the USA."

Ooooh, a whole thousand. And I bet none of them was Alec Baldwin.

US Air Force wants "full control" of "any and all" computers

May 15, 2008 10:36am

#40,
Is that the rollseyes at the fact that a few of our enemies may actually use Macs,
or the rollseyes at the fact that some Apple fanboys actually think that Macs are impenetrable,
or the rollseyes that they're not really our enemies, or what? I didn't get the memo.

Crazy rasberry ants devour Houston's electronics

2. This ain't Slashdot, I'm positive.

Phone-unlocking SIM-shim

May 6, 2008 2:46pm

FYI: Immersion gold plating on PCBs is not intended for contacts, but for a solderability preserving finish. If you pop these cards in and out a bunch of times don't expect that gold to hold up. By its nature it can only be a few microinches thick, at most. But for the purpose here, it's probably adequate.

Ontario bakery succeeds with honor payment system

I didn't know "the honor system" was so well defined. They didn't say "no rules", you did. You do realize that rules are not inherently bad things, I hope.

UK man hassled by cop for not having a "camera license"

April 17, 2008 3:36pm

I would like to purchase a license for my pet camera, Eric. And also one for Eric the fruit bat.

[pedantic sarcasm]
If you have to have a license to own a television in the UK, why not one for a camera? They're both receiving electromagnetic radiation, just at much different wavelengths.
[end pedantic sarcasm]

Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?

April 16, 2008 12:27pm

1. I doubt it would work, but I'd rather have a jar of water on my lawn than one pile (or many piles) of dog poop.

2. I did see in an article about malaria a picture of a bag of cow's blood that was just covered with feeding mosquitoes. Not sure what the bag was made of but I suspect it resembled skin more than a Zip-Loc bag.

3. We recently have had to put a piece of aluminum foil on our bedroom window and keep the blind shut in order to deter some robins from repeatedly bashing into the window. It has worked.

Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them

April 16, 2008 12:18pm

"Oregon claims copyright over the typesetting and numbering of the laws rather than the actual text of the laws themselves."

So the simple solution is to use a scanner and OCR software and change the typesetting?

The numbering? How can I say "You're in violation of ORS 3.11.2a Paragraph305" or whatever without using the numbering?

Oregon is often just silly.

Old comic book depicts US suicide bomber as hero

McCain and conspiracy theorists agree that Washington is Satanic

April 9, 2008 2:04pm

#16, Apreche,
Yes, Christians are monotheists, but if you are worshipping Baal, or money, or any other false god, you're not (really) worshipping God, and He doesn't like that. Like it says, You can serve God or you can serve Mammon (but not both]. He requires an exclusive relationship when it comes to worship.

2001: A Space Odyssey revisited after 40 years

April 4, 2008 6:04pm

It's my favorite movie of all time. Partly cuz the special effects were awesome for 1968, still are good, partly cuz the music is the best.

What's this one? Ham? I think that's what it's supposed to be anyway.

Debating the feasibility of an in-flight liquid bomb

I think you're right. The logo doesn't follow the contour of the hair. Photoshop or GIMP did it, not a focused-ion beam.

Oxygen (the result of peroxide decomposition) is not THAT poisonous - certainly diluted by all the air on the plane it would not be a problem. Now if you got HCN onto the plane - that could be a problem.

Woman bites dog

Same here, Chromal, but I understand that may not be enough with some dogs. Don't think I'd try biting though. Humans can use tools though.

Air Canada: for $35, we'll let you talk to customer-service reps who can actually help you with a cancelled flight

April 4, 2008 12:13pm

Alaska Airlines bought me lunch (OK, a $6 voucher) when a recent flight was delayed about 2-3 hours and gave me a certificate for $25 off or 1000 frequent flier miles.

Best practices for water imbibing: "Just drink when you're thirsty"

April 4, 2008 12:08pm

I don't think the point is to stop drinking water. But it is reasonable to question the "everyone must drink 64 ounces of water every day" rule. How was it determined? Basically it was just made up without supporting evidence.

US-funded health search-engine censors all results for searches on "abortion" -- UPDATED

April 4, 2008 11:58am

I don't see how this is an anti-abortion tactic as some seem to think it is. Getting the info out about abortion should not make it more likely that abortions will be done.

Air Canada: for $35, we'll let you talk to customer-service reps who can actually help you with a cancelled flight

April 4, 2008 11:54am

I flew Air Canada once to Vancouver from Portland. I got delayed in the Vancouver Airport due to some terrorist threat, IIRC, but otherwise it was an unremarkable experience.
In a few weeks I will fly a long trip on Lufthansa, and I expect the service to be much better - it better be for $2000 a ticket.

Debating the feasibility of an in-flight liquid bomb

April 4, 2008 11:47am

JS7A: 100g of potassium is not going to be able to significantly damage an airplane. It gets pretty fizzy and generates some hydrogen, but 100g K = 2.56 mol, which means 1.28 mol H2 generated. (That's about 8.3 gallons at ordinary pressure and room temperature). When H2 burns to form water vapor, 235kJ/mol are released, so in this case 300kJ are released. If you could trap all the H2 and combust it all it once, it could be significant, but you can't - it doesn't combust fast enough - and you're much more likely to just end up with some nasty chemical and thermal burns in your rectum if your condom breaks, a bad case of gas, and to be body cavity-searched when that 100g of METAL sets off the metal detector in airport security.
BTW, 100g of potassium, a low density metal, would occupy 112 mL, a fairly large plug to put in your rectum. I wouldn't recommend it.

Sunspots don't cause global warming, people do

20 years is not even one complete sunspot cycle, as others have alluded to. Not enough data.

Ted Turner: global warming could lead to cannibalism

April 3, 2008 11:31pm

8F is a lot, but no one, and I believe that's really NO one that actually knows anything about it (Ted Turner obviously excluded), is saying that the global average temperature is going to increase by anywhere near 8F, much less 8C, in as short a time as 30 or 40 years, or even 100 years, are they?

Good Comment: Mott, on child abduction and trafficking in Guatemala

March 28, 2008 11:48am

Please note that the US only recently ratified the Hague Convention and it is not yet in effect although adoption agencies have been working to meet its requirements in advance.

Only those adoption service providers who have been accredited, temporarily accredited, or approved by either COA or CO will be able to provide adoption services for Hague adoption cases after the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption enters into force for the United States on April 1, 2008
http://www.travel.state.gov/family/adoption/convention/convention_4169.html#

If you plan to adopt from overseas, make sure the country and agency you choose comply with the treaty.

Good Comment: Mott, on child abduction and trafficking in Guatemala

March 28, 2008 11:42am

What about the Tisch1017 post is suspect? Most of it is questions. As for the phrase "Director of an orphanage", I would imagine that anyone who has adopted a child from a orphanage would use such a term.
I don't doubt that child trafficking occurs in the world, but it depends on the country and the adoption agency. The Hague Convention provides a measure of protection for the children involved in intercountry adoption and the State Department *does* have a warning on its site about Guatemala. That does not mean that all countries are in the same boat.

Guatemala Status of Intercountry Adoptions and the Hague Convention

June 13, 2007

The U.S. Department of State continues to caution American prospective adoptive parents contemplating adopting children from Guatemala that the U.S. Government cannot recommend adoption from Guatemala at this time because of the ongoing problems in Guatemala’s intercountry adoption process. Although U.S. consular officers currently continue to process adoption immigrant visa cases, each case is now subject to greater scrutiny than in the past and the process may be slower as a result.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) office in Guatemala is taking up to 60 days to review initial documents and up to four business days to review final adoption documents. Please see their notice to the public. The consular section of the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala will generally issue appointment letters the day after USCIS completes its review of the final adoption documents.

from http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/convention/convention_3257.html

If it looks like I am a propagandist, it is only because I am currently adopting from overseas and so am somewhat familiar with the process.

Medical transcriptionist melts keyboard with fingertips

March 28, 2008 11:11am

They really don't look like they were *worn*, especially the 'n' key. It looks more like an acute trauma, to use a medical analogy (how appropriate!) like heat or solvent damage. pH doesn't really explain it either. To damage plastic typically you need a very high pH. Not something found on human skin. Metal corrosion, OK, polymer degradation, not so much. As for acetone in fingernail polish - yeah, but only if she used the keyboard before the stuff dried.
Finally, if the 'n' and 'm' keys look like that, then what do the 'e', 't', 'a', (all more frequently used than 'n' and 'm') and space bar look like??

Creationist documentary premiere bars science blogger, accidentally lets in Richard Dawkins

Man kills self with suicide robot

March 20, 2008 12:55pm

Bob,
So it's really a *homicidal* robot?

I'd say a gun with a remote-controlled, timed mechanical device to operate the trigger does not constitute a "robot". I could be wrong.

The wit and wisdom of Prince Philip

March 18, 2008 3:15pm

Might be true and all, but you don't say it to someone who's lost their children in a fire.

"Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
Not exactly an apropos quote. Guess it should be "Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you an asshole..." in this case.

hogwash.
it's a guy riding a horse up a hill, like the president said. as for the rider's character, that's another story.
looking at this image and not being certain what it depicts, when it is basically a photorealistic painting of an outdoor scene, strikes me as the response of a schizophrenic, not a healthy mind.

HOWTO Make a magic fireball (flaming oily rag) -- UPDATED

January 15, 2008 4:10pm

Anne Marie Helmenstine on her Chemistry blog (chemistry.about.com) mentions trying this after seeing a report of someone doing at Make (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/01/how_to_make_fireballs.html).
She mentions it's important to use cotton as it doesn't melt and burn you like polyester or nylon could.
I'm not gonna try it myself. I don't like getting burned.
