Netgear router is open-source in both software and hardware
July 1, 2008 10:22am
This is very exciting. A major hardware manufacturer is actually embracing open-source, complete with full documentation.
It's sad to see so many negative reactions. I'll admit that I've had some bad experiences with Linksys hardware in years past, but I haven't tried them in years, and back then it seemed like everyone's routers sucked. Maybe I'm naive, but I think it's worth trying Linksys again.
I adore my current router, which is a Buffalo with the Tomato firmware. Sadly, Buffalo can't currently sell their excellent hardware in the US while they fight with a patent troll. I've been thinking of getting a second router to increase my range, so I think I'll give this linksys a shot.
Why it's good to leave your WiFi open
January 10, 2008 11:41am
Right on. I keep mine open for the same reasons.
I use a High Power Buffalo router with the open-source firmware called Tomato. It allows me to set a few rules so that any aliens using my wireless have a few light limitations imposed on them, and I have it set to give me a QOS advantage, so if my service is approaching saturation, the alien's packets slow down before my own do.
I have never noticed even the slightest of slowdowns caused by outside users.
I've been toying with the idea of adding a splash screen using NoCatSplash so that I can tell people they're welcome to use my wifi as long as they're well-behaved, and encourage them to do the same if they ever operate their own access point.
Urban chicken controversy in Montana
November 14, 2007 2:36pm
Good old Missoula. I went to school and lived there for 8 years, and still visit from time to time. I do miss that town. I'm actually surprised that chickens are not currently allowed.
I also love fresh, local eggs. People have chickens here in the city and it's great. I try not to buy eggs that come from hundreds or thousands of miles away.
I think it would be great to have a chicken or two for eggs. But I'm renting right now, so that's probably not in the cards until I buy a house.
I got a kick out the video.

Oh, for crying out loud. If my blog had lots of posts about how wonderful someone was, and then I discovered that they weren't so wonderful, I'd probably do the same thing. I would either remove or update my old posts, and for boingboing to go back and add "Never mind. She sucks" to all the old posts would have been snarky and passive-aggressive in the extreme. The only real remaining solution is to delete the old posts.
Whatever Violet Blue did, I'm sure it warranted some response if the generally chill boingboing crew as a whole took issue with her behavior.
In summary: Whatever.
