Obama's support for the FISA "compromise"

June 25, 2008 10:17am

I'm disappointed in Obama. I think he has a good chance of winning. If he he wins we will have to pressure him do certain things, as somebody has already pointed out.

For that we need more and better Democrats in Congress. We unseated a Bush dog congressman in Maryland and replaced him with a real Democrat. (And I helped!) This will have to happen many more times before people get the message, I suspect.

Obama creates high expectations, so disappointment hurts. He's not perfect and you will never find the perfect candidate.

Watching Al Gore accept the Nobel Prize on C-Span, though, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Imagine how different the world would be now if he had assumed the Presidency in 2000.

Act, criticize, organize, but please don't jump to the conclusion that they are all the same, that it makes no difference who you vote for.

One registered Democrat's opinion, FWIW...

Oh, and as Atrios pointed out:

...Democrats will regret embracing the expansion of executive power because a President Obama will find his administration undone by an "abuse of power" scandal. All of those powers which were necessary to prevent the instant destruction of the country will instantly become impeachable offenses. If you can't imagine how such a pivot can take place then you haven't been paying attention.

Review of Jack Kirby's OMAC

June 20, 2008 9:02am

I pretty much agree with Jed.

I got the entire 4th World set for Father's Day (best family EVER), & while the guy was undoubtedly a genius, his storytelling and dialogue don't quite match the genius of his pencils.

Maybe it has something to do with Kirby's being a 50s beat-influenced kind of guy writing in the groovy 70s.

It might explain clunkers like Jimmy Olsen's line: "Even if the story's a lie, it's a whopper!" Or a character named Scott Free.

And yet, and yet ... some fascinating ideas, a really epic vision of the universe.

But I still prefer his work with Marvel. His falling-out with Stan Lee seems the equivalent of the Beatles breakup.

A Convenient Lie

June 19, 2008 9:48am

I mean, right-wing, political hit groups never manipulate facts, do they?

Antinous is on to something here. We seem to be taking this so-called think tank at face value.

This group is part of the noise machine.

I need independent verification before I accept the time of day from these people.

Having said that, there do seem to be good reasons why Gore uses the energy he does, as some of the posters are pointing out.

Even so, one's personal imperfections do not necessary invalidate his ideas.

If I smoke a pack a day but tell you not to smoke, you'd be better off doing as I say, not as I do.

I confess to political bias. I voted for Gore. And when I watched his Nobel speech, it hit me hard, what a different world we would be living in today had he assumed the presidency.

I'm happy for them, too, but I scanned this whole page for a HEROES reference. What the hell's wrong with you people...? : )

Cory, thanks for posting this.

I suppose the officer who said "drum up" will say he'd been misquoted, or taken out of context (which seems to be the new "I was misquoted").

The comparisons to the Frank Rizzo years are dead accurate.

House votes against telcom immunity for illegal wiretapping

March 15, 2008 6:17pm

I called my congressman (Ed Pastor, 4th-AZ: "The Fighting Fourth!") before the vote and after, to thank him for voting the right way. I also congratulated the House Dems for getting newbie Reps. Gifford and Mitchell, class of '06, to vote with the Democrats on a matter of principle for a change.

I've called Pastor every time this issue comes up. He's a reliable voter, usually, but not a leader. We need to keep the pressure on these people.

Democracy: it's kind of exhausting.

Without the blogosphere, this issue would never have come to my attention. Your liberal media!

Luke was on the list of names for our kid, but we didn't really want to do that to the child of a rabid "Star Wars" fan. Who wants to spend their formative years listening to some doughy heavy-breathing guy going "Luke! I am your FATHER!"?

This is not what America is supposed to be about.

To put it mildly.

9/11, Saddam's regime, Daniel Pearl, etc. are no excuse.

If "our" "side" does this, then what difference does it make which "side" "wins" the "war"?

Please vote, and work for progressive candidates where you find them.

Legislators need to get used to the idea that they have a national constituency. Jim Webb (random example, honest) would not be in the Senate today if not for the efforts of many people outside Virginia. Just a thought.
