Why are electronic payment systems such a wreck?

On the Mobile Money post. Doesn't that mean that anyone who has your phone can charge whatever they like to it?

Car-exhaust oven, 1930

April 19, 2008 4:57am

When I was in the army we used to wrap food in foil and wire it to the exhaust manifold while we moved between sites on exercises. There's nothing like rolling in to a snow-covered German field in deepest winter and tucking into a hot meal within seconds!!

Dance number from Pop Gear, 1965 Brit Invasion movie

The blond guy at the begining of this clip is Jimmy Savile who hosted Top of the Pops - a hugely popular chart type show of that time. He seemed never to age and ended up getting a knighthood to go with the Prince Valiant hairdo.

Off switch needs key to be turned back on

February 26, 2008 12:33pm

We have these suckers on our cardkey controlled doors, so they can be bypassed in an emergency. Hit the button to unlock the door. Of course when you do that an ear-splitting siren goes off and can't be silenced until the guy with the key is summoned to turn it off.
And, of course, these things are situated as close as possible to the light switch, so that when you grope around to turn the lights on you have the maximum chance of setting the sucker off......

Wireless Tasers Fired from Shotguns

December 10, 2007 9:21pm

Crash-- I think the point is that the police are less likely to go at someone with their nightstick than they are with the Taser. The choice used to be risk getting physical with someone versus shooting them dead - either way there's a possible downside, throwdowns notwithstanding. The Taser gives them a risk-free way to abuse the public.

Slate's Jack Shafer on Rolling Stone drug war article

IMHO the message to young people should be "What a sucker you're being played for" by the dealers. That would resonate more than appeals on health grounds. Nobody likes to be suckered (except diehard Bushies)

Split Thump: Oakley Still Making Jerk-Ass MP3 Player Sunglasses

November 6, 2007 8:35pm

I'm with Hicks. I live in the tropics and have always bought half-decent sunglasses, but I'm using Maui Jims now and they make everything look so much better - less saturated, more vivid. I wouldn't be without them at $190.
