Boing Boing tv backstage at Outside Lands: (Xeni + Russell Porter)
August 24, 2008 12:45am
Aha! I spotted your bus today! This was interesting, thanks. You guys better get the deets on these LED screens they have set up around. I've been trying to watch the show but keep getting distracted by the insane contrast ratio on these screens. I've never seen such a super bright, massive colorful screen.
Also, this crow fire business. The logo is a fitting sign of the times where people reach cameras into the air instead of lighters. But the whole "give your media to microsoft and our "professional video djs" will remix your video" thing is kind of wonky. Seeing people's photos on screens around the festival is cool though.

Two things I learned from the New York Times this morning
July 22, 2008 12:14am
Love the concept, too bad it's heavily un-sustainable.
"The batteries and the display case are manufactured and put together in China. They are shipped to Texas and on to Mexico, where the device is inserted by hand into each magazine. The issues will then be shipped via trucks, which will be refrigerated to preserve the batteries, to the magazine’s distributor in Glazer, Ky."
wow.

wow, I was wondering what kind of cool stuff you could do with those released 3D face data. Awesome.
Joel Johnson interviews Syd Mead: part 2.

Would also like to know the artist from the gatefold album. Great episode, goes too quickly though! I feel like syd needs to do a TED talk. That would be stellar.
Radiohead's new 3D-viz video made from Creative Commons-licensed data

reminds me of the tv on the radio video for staring at the sun, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uo2WLQ2LVA. Similar effect but not the same process I suppose.
What to do with an adopted, button-cute indigo iMac G3?

I used an imac much slower than this as a server at school all last year. Runs azureus and vine server for VNCing in just fine.

Joel, this is the gadget reporting I live for. No one beats your style. I seem to remember a post on gizmodo way back when where you talked about this ipod 3g hack which made the screen look like it had been "freebasing crest white strips." Amazing.
Have you thought about a book? I'd buy a book of gadget news like this for sure.

"Depending on the process used, clothing manufactured from hemp can last anywhere from 3x to 10 times longer than those made from cotton"
I wish this were true. I bought some hemp pants and they were covered in holes after only a couple years. Guess they weren't manufactured in the right process but either way, didn't make me very confident in hemp clothing...

TED talk: Joshua Klein's vending machine for crows
May 17, 2008 6:31pm
This seems to me to be a great way to pick up cigarette buts. They are a terrible polluter and a pain in the ass to pick up. Crows cleaning up cigarette buts would be revolutionary.
