Danny Kaye's Outfox The Fox

May 24, 2008 9:39am

The first time I watched this with my son, he was 6 and he loved the knighting scene. Kaye gets shuffled around like an ant and my son couldn't stop laughing. I'm always looking for old movies for us to watch as a family - this is one of the best.

Time-lapse video of man trapped in an elevator for 41 hours

April 15, 2008 4:19pm

I had the same thing happen to me about 20 years ago. I was stuck for about 4 hours while my wife had called police, etc. I should've stuck the management company for the ordeal but I just took their offer for a nice dinner for my wife and I.

Apparently I got caught in the weekend shutdown sequence (Friday night) where they'd shutoff some of the shafts. I was by myself, too. About 45 minutes after I was stuck (and constantly ringing the alarm), someone came on the intercom and asked what the problem was. Nothing happened after that and I never found out who I'd talked to.

I was also stuck in the blind part of the shaft. I could push the doors open but there was only a concrete wall. I did get some satisfaction with being able to relieve my bladder on the wall.

I was only able to get out a few hours later by yelling at the elevator passing by in the adjacent shaft. The riders told building security about hearing somebody yelling in the shaft. When they talked to me on the intercom again, that was the most anger I remember ever feeling.

I've never really regretted not suing - some money would've been nice but, in the long view, the whole thing didn't affect me much. A few months after that incident, the building changed management companies.

Treehouse ruins: the archaeology of kids' ruins

February 20, 2008 7:32am

I grew up in the Southwest where the desert is, for the most part, devoid of forest and large trees. Next to my house was a large, abandoned army bombing range (which had been cleared of live ordnance) that had many large craters. So rather than build up, we built down - basically just covering the craters with palettes and brush. You could also use barbed wire if you were willing to drag it to your location. I remember seeing our abandoned sites for many years afterwards.

Space Food Sticks

I remember chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch flavors. I can't think of any food with a similar texture because it was so completely artificial. Maybe like chewing on a soft crayon? I was a Tang drinker, too.

Clever grocery-store coupon strategy

About once a year, one of our local TV stations runs a piece about saving with coupons:

I did this for awhile until I figured out that the I was saving money on food of questionable nutritional value. I agree with THEBLESSEDBLOGGER that you can save money with careful shopping and planning and eat better.

I used the site mentioned in the TV piece, cutouthunger.org, and another I can't remember. Both provided timing information, lists, and best deals. If you're serious about coupons, these sites are essential.

HOWTO build a cardboard spaceship

Wow. Something else I've been doing just for kicks with my kids that I could be charging money for. Guess I should put all my stuff in Sketchup and put up a For Sale sign.

Pill to "improve first-person shooter performance"

January 17, 2008 3:47pm

I guess I'm just an old guy with sex on the brain - when I read the title of this post, the first thing I thought was that it was some kind of joke about erectile dysfunction - Improve Performance!

Dead bug funeral Kit

January 9, 2008 4:14pm

Wow. I used to perform live burials of ants in beer and soda cans as kid living in West Texas. Now I find out I could be making money marketing that twisted compulsion.

Pro-tech/anti-commie vid from the 1939 World's Fair

I thought it ironic that, in the opening scene, the father scolds the son about not being interested in "opportunities for young people". In a few years, that kid would be going to fight in the war!

I would not recommend to anyone wearing those "cans" on your ears. Pure torture no matter how good you make them sound!
