New Dungeons and Dragons license less sleazy than I believed?

May 3, 2008 9:36am

I find it interesting a company should use this 'minor leak' system for anything they do. "Hey Joe Leak the idea we had for making companies only publish under one licence" "Sure Boss" Forums go nuts the screaming and yelling is heard around the world. "Hmmm okay best not do that! Issue a FAQ: We never said that!"

Epic USB duplicator burns 60 thumbdrives at once: what would you copy?

April 29, 2008 3:01pm

Admittedly some rather funny little program that shows some dolt doing a funky chicken dance while surreptitiously loading a keylogger and passing that info semi regularly to an account you have would be almost worth while spending the $8k for it. Not that I would encourage that. But I think there might be a better DIY solution that could be done, that is similar. Here on BB (not BBG, but BB itself) there was a discussion about how in Cuba a form of Samizdat was being spread via USB keys to people who wanted stuff, and having a local repository where you could plug in quickly get a download of stuff and go home might be interesting... almost say like the Cellphone charging stations once profiled here via Afrigadget I believe.

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 25, 2008 9:38am

I've never owned a shuffle, but I have owned a few el cheapo mp3 players, and the common problem they usually had is that the order which the files went onto them is the order they played in, this seems fine normally, but sometimes the OS finds ways of copying over a whole chunk of files to a device that isn't the order you want it copied. However being an album person myself, infact I dunno if I am an album person as opposed to a discography person, I listen to an artist from the beginning of work until the most recent or last of their work after they break up or die in some headline story. Hearing progression, and change on that scale is just as important to me as the song is in context to an album. I think this has elements of scale, people appreciate the melodies of two or three notes strung together, others are affected by songs in order on the album, others like me like to understand albums in context to an artists total output. Chunking up on that I guess would be the artists contribution to the genre as a whole, which would be an interesting idea for a playlist.. the major artists of a genre great albums placed in context of one another to give larger understanding of that culture, a mini musical zetigest.

Re-creation of "Who's On First routine"

April 23, 2008 4:10pm

It was painful to watch, but then near the end (if you got that far) it got actually very interesting, when she starts going off in either another language I don't recognize, or a crazed phonic salad. He's, dare I say it, far too straight for the role of Abbott.

In the Woods: Brooklyn, we have a problem

April 23, 2008 8:52am

Ouch, okay not the best situation, I wonder if any of the manufacturers of these products are taking notes?

NYPD cop: videoing me breaking the law is a terrorist act

April 23, 2008 8:33am

After watching this video we have a real life example where the videographer is "right" but still "an asshole". Im not in NYC, but its reasonable to say a) parking in front of a hydrant is illegal for citizens and police not on emergency business, b) driving without a seatbelt is not the most smart thing to do in most places its illegal, police officer or not. He is however quite badgering and just being an asshole. Yes document, yes call to light whats going on to the individual involved. But badgering people (anyone, police or otherwise) is likely to get something less than nice to happen to you.

The reality of depending on "1000 True Fans"

April 22, 2008 8:49pm

The equation is X number of Fans spending Y number of dollars per year = Artists Living. If we take the idea that an artist needs to build to a certain sizable fan base ie 1,000 true fans, we need to understand that as an artist they would need to generate a certain amount of value attached to their product (or an increase in the amount of unique product). The Y number was nicely rounded to $100 a year, which isn't actually that much. But we don't just give any old person $100 just because, we expect a certain level of value for that $100, a CD, going to a performance with a tshirt thrown in, isn't going to be $100 of value to even the most ardent fan. When the original 1K Fan posting was released it was right around the time Trent did his thing, he offered a limited edition package for a fair bit of coin, however the value of this package was seen by most people as worthy, ie the apparent value to them was worth more than what they paid for it. So they didn't mind parting with the cost for the item, add in the fact it was limited, it cinched it, he was smart to make sure that wasn't the ONLY thing offered, not everyone wanted to pony up for that limited edition work. If you put out something a book a cd or what have you and people buy it great but if you want the 1,000 true fans to feed your lifestyle, you have to be able to provide a certain amount of value to those fans, per year, every year, and hope they come through on their side of the bargain. The value you produce has to be worthy of that $100 a year to your fans, else the equation breaks down.

Disneyland bans pictures in its parking lots

April 22, 2008 9:18am

I think the fact that a lot of Disney goers would like to remember their time at a Disney attraction by helping capture the memory of such an event using cameras and the like starts to impede on what could be understood as everyday living. Are we now going to have Weddings which when someone else wants to take a picture the authorized wedding photogapher claims sole rights to their job and bans everyone from taking pictures of the bride and groom, and they have to buy the pictures from the photographer to have that special day remembered. You find yourself on vacation and meet some cool people and see really cool things but aren't allowed to take a photograph because its illegal to do so everywhere and of everyone? Photography has been around over a hundred years and it seems that misunderstood legalese is slowly annexing it into oblivion.

2001 profile of "Bill Ayers, unrepentant former Weather Underground revolutionary"

April 21, 2008 6:26pm

Who hasn't said a few things when they were younger that they regret today... or could easily be taken out of context fairly easily decades after the fact. Much like John Lennon saying "We're bigger than Jesus."

Week in the Woods: Final checklist; Leaving tomorrow!

Verizon quotes $420 in setup fees for business DSL, and that doesn't include the actual DSL

April 21, 2008 9:34am

Im going with Strider here, learning how it all works can be a pain but it would be more than worth it in the long run. Having someone with good wifi extension experience be there helping you out would make sure you don't make stupid newbie mistakes. I am sure the Wifi Predator which was mentioned here (or on the main boingboing site, I can't remember now) at http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/261/42/ will be adaptable to get the signal from one particular access point, and repeat your signal to the new place. It isn't illegal to use if you own that access point and you are simply extending it.

Toronto's science fiction reading series; launching my LITTLE BROTHER on May 1

April 19, 2008 4:40pm

YankeeKnowHow: I for one have been awaiting this novel from Corey, I rather enjoyed his previous works and this one is something I look forward to reading. Corey's novels are not for everyone (is anything right for everyone?) but there are quite a few people who like them... including me.

Starving people in Haiti eating mud

April 18, 2008 3:59pm

I know many people will eventually make the reference to Soylent green, but as time passess and prices for basic staples go up and up, the usefulness of already dead people being used for their meat and like materials becomes more and more attractive, as long as it looks edible 'where' it comes from is less of a concern, especially with the right spin and marketing campaign "People its for breakfast!" Its probably better to eat people than it is to eat mud anyways.

Woman goes on YouTube to air divorce grievances

New Youtube Meme, people airing grievances about marriage that are frivolous and annoying. Spot the real from the well done fakes.

Bell Canada: We have to screw up other ISPs' connections or our retail customers will suffer by comparison

April 17, 2008 7:56pm

Makes me wonder when us in Western Canada will undergo the same treatments, here we have Telus as the main DSL provider, and Shaw & Rogers as the main cable providers. Its not the most ideal situation, but we do have options if one starts to shape, but knowing how things go when one starts to they all start to and thus no alternative arise.

Nanotech clothing will recharge your gadgets by capturing your movement

April 17, 2008 4:59pm

But ummm that would require us to get out of our chairs and actually ummm move. Sounds like a risky propostion, I might sweat, or as Penny Arcade called it "Its like my body is crying! Am I about to die?"

Bruce Sterling on the freaky future of installation design

April 13, 2008 8:58am

Every time I watch/hear Bruce talk, I get two opposite reactions, he is describing a world that every conspiracy theorist has told me to be intimately scared of at a fundamental level, and yet he makes me want it. Want it at such a level that I wonder why it isn't here already.

What Would You Put in Your Perfect Backpack?

April 10, 2008 6:41pm

I have tried to post a few times to this, and it keeps eating them... not fun. Having reinforced straps that are anti slashproof as another has also suggested is way cool. Easy in and out for gadgets for the Airport, the idea to have a removable compartment for just your gadgets makes this a snap (again suggested above). A GPS tag or something similar on the bag is important if you leave it, if it gets stolen well... most thieves will ditch the bag but you never know.

Boss of F1 Grand Prix racing in Nazi-themed sex orgy scandal

April 7, 2008 9:07pm

Hmmm something makes me think $5,000 for what he got wasn't really a bad deal for all parties involved. Heck those girls in the Czech republic who run the OWK demand a WHOLE lot more than a paltry $5,000, they demand real obedience and absolute loyalty for life.

To do in SF - Tibet rally on April 8, Richard Gere, Desmond Tutu

April 6, 2008 6:00pm

I usually watch the Olympics, but you know what, aint gonna happen this year, if there was a petition of people who were not going to watch/support and avoid supporting any company who advertises as the official something supporter of these olympics, Id sign it. Boycotts don't have to be at a national level (granted it makes more of an impact that way) but can be at a personal level. Yep Id sign it.

Banks refuse to take title on repossessed crappy houses

April 3, 2008 9:48am

Why even 'evict' people? Foreclose, don't take title, and leave the people there, if no one 'owns' the property, the property would probably return to the corporation of the city, much like if you failed to pay the property taxes ( I am not a lawyer, anywhere ). The Sherrif would probably be obligated to remove them from the property until a buyer can be found to purchase it at an auction for pennies on the dollar... as its important to the city to have someone live on the land to generate income from taxes. Something is better than nothing.

Social worker befriends mugger

March 28, 2008 1:59pm

Reminds me of a scene in the movie Peaceful Warrior with Nick Nolte and Scott Mechlowicz, opinions of the movie aren't really important, just there was a scene a little like this in the film. Main characters are asked at knife point (or gun point can't remember) to hand over their money, so they hand the money over but they don't let the muggers simply leave with just the money, they offer them pretty much everything else they have, coats, shirts, pants, shoes, the muggers obviously were a bit perplexed by it all.

Vegan strippers

March 27, 2008 11:31am

Vegan Strip Clubs, its actually refreshing to live in a world with choice. I eat meat myself, but if people don't wanna, they don't have to and being in a place where they can indulge in non animal debauchery, hey thats cool. Reminds me of a woman who I used to volunteer with in Toronto who made the first (that she or I knew of) Vegan Porn video, named g-sprout.

Scott Sigler's INFECTED -- free download, inexplicably limited

March 27, 2008 5:47am

I think I have been listening to Scott now for a couple of years, back to Ancestor (there are those who started with Earthcore, which is serious Original Junkie) and I remember Infection (the original name of Infected) as it was podcast. What Scott has mentioned many times in the podcast is that with podcasting its gives the audience a glimpse of the novel and when you podcast it, you get to see errors in your writing, and you also have feedback about the science sometimes from people who do similar things for a living, allowing for you to fix up small errors here and there. This is like a community beta of the book. Infection got this treatment and was able to be fixed up fairly well, got optioned for its movie rights, and had its name changed (in part because of movies named Infection and Infectious, and so it became Infected). The Audio has been completely redone (according to Scott he did it one sitting so that the audiobook could be put out on or soon after the Novel launch date) but he isn't leaving his listeners out in the cold, he has Nocturnal being done on his regular weekly Sunday schedule and because the new audio for infected is already done he is able to put an intro and an ending onto a segment of the prerecorded Audio and offer that up on Mondays. He has also been experimenting with short 10 min audio bursts of something completely new of which no one has any idea about they just appear on the feed/page to do with a spaceship of condemned men in about the same time period that 'The Rookie' is a part of, if its only a short story or a full novel he has been mum about it (they even somewhat appear to be garbled entries put out by errors in the php/database connection, to add to the mystery), but given the short audio concept a lot of the Junkies are finding themselves maddeningly hooked because he focuses on giving just enough to wet your appetite and then it ends.

Science fiction authors offer unusual Homeland Security Advice

March 26, 2008 2:08pm

I find it interesting that we expect writers we like to have politics we like... remember Kerouac was for Vietnam. SciFi writers write about potential futures, which sometimes is all about taking an idea and running with it into the future (or an alternate present) and imagining the world as it could be like that. Our resident SciFi writer Cory might have some pretty bizzare politics/ideas he doesn't mention because he knows the backlash would be too great to say them in public, but its his right to have them. But hey if he writes a fictional sci-fi book about it, hey might be something we would read, just to go WOW.

Clay Shirky's Harvard talk: Here Comes Everybody

March 25, 2008 8:17pm

I think the talk not so much who is utilizing the tools for collaboration, but WHY they are using these tools for collaboration. Some tools might seem stupid and without importance and yet there are people who find they fit the exact needs they have to create groups of like minded individuals who use them for various reasons, both good and bad. To sum up... simple interfaces without bells and whistles that allow for social interaction are better than overly complex can do everything tools but break when you look at them, let alone understand them even if they have help files, this is important because quite a few times these tools are going to be used by people who don't understand the language, but tools that can be language/culturally neutral with simple interfaces make for great tools to be used in a social context, allowing for potential communities to arise at almost any URL.

So its not 'Who' benefits but rather 'Why' & 'How' they benefit.

Newscast from a robot-dominated future -- Onion video

March 21, 2008 7:55am

When I found out that the Onion was going video segents a few weeks ago I literally died and went to heaven, I saw this clip back then and literally howled, the other 'round table' discussions can be quite well done, like Is The Government Doing Enough To Help Schizophrenics? Some miss the mark, but they are at least in my opinion, definitely in the minority.

Big square USB-key duplicator

March 21, 2008 7:46am

I assume its not standalone (which would actually make it quite effective, images of shady types in some unidentifiable accent in some far off country going 'Hey want some Amerikan Porn?' go through my head) and that you need a computer to facilitate the transfer, though it could be interesting to use as a massive USB hub.

Read "Double or Nothing" for free online

March 20, 2008 4:51pm

This looks like an interesting book... too bad I won't be reading it. Im all for the idea of making stuff free & online for people to read even just for a while, and I was rather gung ho on the idea of reading American Gods again when it was posted on here that it was available to be read, but the UI and format that it was put into turned me off of it so terribly I stopped after only a page or two... I load up this one and see its the same thing (even before everything is loaded) I just closed the tab. Its like attempting to read a book physically fixed to a desk while your fingers are in thumbscrews. Id rather get a copy from the library, scan it page by page OCR the images and then read it, because THAT is less of a hassle.

How to make fake gold bars

March 17, 2008 2:06pm

I thought this post would be something like an instructable to make gold bars for say like a movie or something ie wouldn't pass anything but a casual glance test... not actually trying to make something to pass REAL muster. Damn now I kind of want to make a tungsten version!

Scientology strikes back at "Anonymous" via YouTube

March 14, 2008 12:41pm

Scientology like most other cults have an atmosphere that 'We Are Right' & 'Everyone Is Really Out To Get Us' (in this case the latter isn't 100% spot on but getting closer and closer everyday). The Anonymous protests are feeding it and helping reinforce their isolationist worldview. Anonymous shouldn't stop however, but Scientologists don't believe in the idea that there is a respectable way to handle this situation, there is only elimination of the enemy, by any means possible. It has been mentioned in many Office of Special Affairs (OSA of the organization 'Church of Scientology') documents that they will litigate people into the ground, they will spread vague undocumented and unprovable claims about someone, harass, and ultimately work an enemy to the point of being mentally broken, and unwilling and totally unable to fight back ever... and with L Ron Willing, commit suicide and be done with. They do not stop at whats illegal, they do not stop at whats immoral, they simply do not stop. As many Anons say regarding these actions... "This Is Why We Fight".

Food Court Musical, by Improv Everywhere

March 10, 2008 5:47am

Every clip of IE shown has been beyond awesome. Not everyone appreciates them, but they do make life lively. To the comment that this would be better appreciated on a campus, most probably, but I think bringing it to the world at large is exactly the lively bit of chaos we all need to see more of in our lives.

Teller survives zombie uprising with conjuring and sniper rifle

March 8, 2008 11:07am

The silent schtick of Teller actually he picked up before he worked with Penn, its a useful way to annoy hecklers, but when its not a magic show he speaks rather eloquently about a great deal of things. I believe he narrated a documentary series on the history of magic, a subject that is near and dear to his heart... we don't know where his heart is at the moment mind you... probably in some luggage carousel in Topeka.

Bloxes: flat-pack cardboard cubes make sound-dampening walls, shelves, dividers, tables, etc

March 8, 2008 9:58am

These look and sound very cool, until I saw the price for them, admittedly the first thing I thought of was its just a piece of cardboard cut into a shape with holes in the middle and some scoring to guide the folding... I then thought I could make the same thing... granted I probably can't do as good as this, but are there any cc/open source variations which could be printed out and hand cut? THAT would rock. Im all for people making premade cuts for $$, but if there is an alternative thats cc/open source/pd thats similar, that I could do myself at home with cardboard I have lying around... that would be better.

ETech: BoingBonic Convergence

March 7, 2008 6:06am

The last time I made a comment about everyones glasses in the last boing boing staff pic a few years ago, and why Xeni wasn't wearing some hip spex like the rest of the gang, she would if everyone would wear heels, so I like to pretend that they are all wearing heels and hope Xeni gets on the sexy glassy goodness. The world is better with four eyes!

Nine Inch Nails made at least $750k from CC release in two days

March 5, 2008 10:40am

There are many many artists who do make enough to make ends meet. I met this wonderful guy who had been around the world touring his music but he still occasionally did temping when he was between tours/recording sessions, but that was fine for him, he found the work relaxing. We would talk well until the morning hours working away (it was an overnight shift) filing internal reports/mail into slots, he mentioned to me about the fact that if your a good performer (not musician so much, but performer) foster connections with your fans, and make them feel the money that is spent by them is worth it, by treating them with respect and honesty, you will rarely have a problem. Answer your fan mail when your a struggling artist, shake hands with people, talk with them after you perform or if your an author while your signing books. These people are gold and draw other fans in... eventually you will have a small but good fan base that will support you, see the 1,000 True Fans article for more on that. Treating fans like criminals, like sheep to be fleeced, doesn't help you in the long run. Trent has built up his fan base for YEARS, yes sometimes with labels (who usually screwed him over, time and time again) so he has the ability to get more for his efforts. But if you put out stuff regularly that you put effort into to be good, you will get a fan base, small yes, but over time it can grow. Not everyone will be a Radiohead or NIN, but sometimes taking over the world isn't the point, but being an artist who treats those who like your work well, rarely starves.

New typography term: Keming (improper kerning)

The Million Zimbabwe Dollar Homepage

February 26, 2008 4:22pm

Works fine for me in firefox. I think this is hilarious, though I can see someone saying 'screw it' and paying for the rest of the pixels in one swoop... I mean come on, its only $33 if you wanted to buy the whole set of them.

Wind turbine self destructs (video)

February 25, 2008 5:52pm

Winds that intense would have toppled tree's, but this is one of the potential dangers. Which is why braking mechanisms are used to prevent this from happening everywhere, occasionally things fail, and that was a wonderfully impressive fail... from a visual standpoint.

Where Are the New Keytars?

February 20, 2008 4:41pm

Ever since I saw Uncle Ghastly aka Chris 'Crackers' Cracknell of Science Big Ninja Ten, (His 'Keytar' was once owned by Thomas Dolby) I too have been wondering if they would ever come back because seeing him rock with one really was impressive.

Swedish couple fined for naming their child "Brfxxccxxmnpcccclll mmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116"

February 20, 2008 11:22am

I find it interesting that people immediately jump on the fact that this child will get pummelled when in school. Note that they didn't actually care to name the child in question, and ONLY when they received a fine for such actions did such unique names come up. Perhaps the idea was to avoid naming the child until the child desired a name and would choose one on those desires... yes some kids might want to call themselves something really freaking odd but sometimes children can be surprisingly intelligent and wise about such things. Names are simply labels, useful but sometimes annoying at the same time. People have to spend quite a bit of money and time to rid themselves of a name they don't want, given to them at a time in which they had zero say in the matter, maybe because they are too busy freaking out at all the new intense stimuli going on they have an emotional episode, which for a child maybe a few mins old is perfectly normal. So we let parents name them, and when people grow up either they are used to the name or they change it at great expense in both time and money.

Ancient Roman Greek computer was used to chart the skies

February 19, 2008 9:08am

While there is mention in the article about a differential gear, if you accept the research done by Wright and Bromley they disproved the use of a differential gear in this mechanism. However there have been many cases for potential differential gears having been made in ancient times, it would be nice if they could prove this had one, but so far all we have is anecdotal evidence which references papers that references papers now lost, worse than a friend of a friend. Who knows we might still find one...

Robot play Towers of Hanoi on iPhone

February 15, 2008 4:40pm

I remember a myth where there was a massive 12 disc tower of hanoi puzzle made out of solid gold (I think it was 12 discs) and when it would be finally solved the world would come to an end. Lets keep the robots away from THAT one shall we?

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 10:25pm

I've been paying attention to this for quite sometime now and there were those who were saying total numbers 30k-300k showing up worldwide, then otherside were thinking a hundred or so worldwide... the numbers are leaning towards 10,000 people. Now whatever side your on, whatever you think 10,000 people protesting an organization in a worldwide protest that was started almost as an aside a month ago (yes the regular $cio critics have been laying the groundwork for years) thats freaking impressive. Infact I would probably say unprecedented, but I am sure someone here will prove me wrong. Will it change things? They are working on getting their tax exemption status revoked (its better than any other established religion in the US, they have special status, I wonder what they had on the IRS to pull THAT one off, mustabeen a doozy) will it totally shut down the corporation known as 'The Church of Scientology' or 'The Religious Technology Center'? Only time will tell only time will tell.

EFF sues DHS over electronics searches

February 8, 2008 3:18pm

I am not an American Citizen, but I live within a short bus ride of the border. If I ever enter the US again, Im popping my HD out of my laptop, using a ubuntu live CD, using GMail to hold my everyday files, and those things which are too sensitive to have on the net but I need with me are on a highly encrypted USB flash drive stuck where the sun don't shine. That said I would have to clear my cellphone contacts entirely (to be resynched when I get to my destination) have zero stuff on my iPod (can you say BORING bus ride?).

They can turn on my computer, boot my ubuntu livecd, & copy whatever they wish because there won't be anything there. Its a pain in the butt (see flash drive above) but if I had say sensitive account information for clients I would consider that not within the purview of the border police, because if they copied said information wouldn't I be held liable for what they did with it, or if they leaked that information accidentallyonpurpose?

There should be no legal way they could get at my files online, thats not ON the computer crossing the border. They would see only a fresh install see no net history, no logs beyond the livecd booting logs. I could then when at my destination resynch everything and hopefully be okay legally.

Lets hope the EFF gets them to fix this because I really don't want to have to fish for the flash drive in the bowl.

Unboxing an Apple IIc

February 4, 2008 5:27pm

That was a beautiful set of photographs, and to think the 5.25" floppies still work after almost 20 years of sitting in a box. Never could own one of those myself but I spent a LOT of time at school sitting in front of them, it was the only way I could get access to a computer at the time.

Egypt: broken undersea cable causes major 'net outage

January 30, 2008 9:30pm

I wonder how this will potentially affect spam, we always note that spam comes from various compromised machines all over, and that the Internet is designed to withstand a nuke blast, it routes around the affected area to get to the destination, but as we have the need to be more and more wired choke points become much more narrow. Spam might be a good indicator of how this affects the system, because no matter what someone in the affected region has a compromised machine or an email address that isn't getting its spam... and its bouncing, would be very interesting to see if anyone does a study on this.

Is Comcast really blocking P2P? EFF + SF Weekly conclude: yeah.

January 23, 2008 8:38pm

the idea that people shouldn't abuse the 'free refills' is NOT the same thing as this... as more and more data gets shared people are going to have to find more efficient ways to distribute this data, because one provider many consumers literally KILL the providers server. BitTorrent despite the fact it could be used for illegal data is one of the most efficient methods for distributing data, it makes sure that not just the provider is providing the file because as you get it you serve it. When world of warcraft distributes its patches it uses a bittorrent like distribution system, this makes sure that they don't get hit hard and that everyone can the the data... what you will see more and more is legal distribution of data utilizing this method, because it works, and if ISPs block it, they will block potentially other companies traffic and that will be a legal nightmare.

Pen-cap cutlery

January 23, 2008 2:40pm

Why have the extra 'tail' on these things? You know the little bit that lets you attach your pen to something like your shirt or a string or what have you so you know where your pen is, its just a tail on the cap that you can wedge something between it and the pen itself to make sure it stays there... but why keep those on these things simply as a stylistic device so that we know these things go onto a pen? Still its something I would so get a whole whack of honestly as this is a simple but amazing idea.

Talking About AT&T's Internet Filtering on AT&T's The Hugh Thompson Show

January 21, 2008 7:51am

Having this recording hopefully will at least make some people start rethinking certain decisions. Governments and now corporations seem to like the whole Panopticon world except when THEY are the ones caught by it, with anyone potentially having a camera these days one can't just make events as if they 'never happened'.

Compex Sports Trainer: Electroshock Your Muscles to Buffness

January 19, 2008 5:55pm

#2 Daniel: I am not familiar with the specifics of the one you mention but the ones that say they can give you a toned muscle body without getting off the couch aren't strong enough of a current really to do any good. This is probably a little more equivalent to therapeutic use like devices which give enough current into the body to force the muscles to flex and the workout is to continue to make the motions anyways... or so it seemed in the video, so in essence your not really working against gravity but yourself... it seems that way (I could be talking out of my butt as I am not a physical therapist and really don't know the specifics of how the contractions of muscles work beyond I think it... it moves..)

World of Warcraft limits your wealth to 2^31 copper

January 19, 2008 11:10am

There will always be those who say 'Get A Real Life' when someone comments on MMO's, whatever people play them and they are great for examining how art and life imitates each other, for example the CDC article which looked at how disease spreads from a concept created in Wow.

Blizzard is rather good for creating Wow gold sinks, and its still pretty unlikely that this will be a problem for anyone but Gold farmers and advanced guild bank characters. When Wrath of the Lich King comes out around November they might update this to 64bit just in case, though still you won't find many people around 21K gold let alone 10x that amount.

Tom Cruise's Scientology video -- and Gawker's legal battle to host it

January 17, 2008 10:33pm

Scientology has quite a few very enthusiastic adherents that honestly it will last quite sometime, and the longer a 'religion' lasts, even if they believe something what we think is silly. It will eventually be generally accepted, Mormonism is still kind of 'kooky' to most but in the State of Utah you don't make too many jokes about it out loud. Scientology, don't say anything bad about it in Clearwater... cause thats just asking for problems. In time maybe they will have enough adherents in Florida it will be the Scientology state?

Honestly someone should write a breakdown of these files in a non biased manner even just to explain all the language that they use, because they throw around a LOT of acronyms which mean zero to everyone who isn't a scientologist, with that information people themselves can make their own mind up about things...

No I am NOT a Scientologist, I'm Discordian and have been for the last 16 years.

Grand Guignol macabre theater

January 14, 2008 1:25pm

Note the fact that this says 2962 as the closing date, I interpreted as being perfectly acceptable for a BoingBoing article... then I found out it was a typo.... and only then was I disappointed.

Ford: Car owners are pirates if they distribute pictures of their own cars

January 13, 2008 10:32pm

So... if your trying to SELL your Ford, in the paper or craiglist or the like, can you take a pic of it so people can see what they might be buying? Or is that against the law too?

Penn Jillette's video rant show

January 11, 2008 3:10pm

I don't always (in fact not even usually) agree with Penn, but he is entertaining... and after seeing this, even off the cuff he is still pretty entertaining.

Pimpstar animated wheels -- "a huge leap forward in the evolution of the wheel"

January 7, 2008 7:08pm

Honestly the ability to do this on the fly (yes thats TOTALLY unsafe I do recognize that) is quite amazingly cool. I mean you kind of can't be doing this slow cruising I would expect, so its useful for highways and thats about it, the stop and start of regular traffic would make the effect useless, and any sort of glare ie daytime would also eliminate its usefulness. I don't think this is a bad idea but its not the 21st century American Graffitti either.

Video: Russian Tank with Fire-Fighting Water Turbines

Serious swords into ploughshares device, even if its old I certainly agree with the idea.

Foxtrot takes a swipe at the DMCA

December 30, 2007 3:33pm

Im still waiting for the US President to be brought forth on charges from the RIAA for having an IPOD with some Beatles tunes before they were available to be legally purchased for his ipod and not simply ripped from a CD which is most likely the case (or maybe they were nabbed with some sort of P2P?)

TSA's new forbidden item: >2 gm lithium batteries

Fox helps itself to photo of blogger's dog

December 25, 2007 7:58pm

When things are copied for personal uses, ie grabbing music from the net to listen to, vs taking someones creation and attempting to profit from it, that we end up with the difference. Fox the NFL and like companies are a business they are out to make a profit. My listening to a song is for personal enjoyment, I make no money listening to the song and smiling. If I was to use that song front to back in a movie I was making I kind of owe someone to use that song in such an instance, or at least get permission to use the song because thats common courtesy, this is the nature of the creative commons, if its (C) you do what you can to ask for permission if its used in something more than ust for yourself, if it was (CC) you know you have certain rights already without having to ask permission (like being able to use it with or without changing it, only for noncommercial use etc.). (C) is becoming VERY unwieldly, if taken to its new logical extent you would have to ask permission from a whole slew of people every day just to live life and potentially pay each of those individuals/corporations. (CC) is much more malleable its in the spirit of what (C) was supposed to mean, this image wasn't FOX's they used it in a NFL game which potentially was a national broadcast (I personally don't know if it was) even (CC) wouldn't allow that unless it was (PD)... which I don't think it was covered under either.

Derren Brown's Tricks of the Mind video -- baffling mentalism

December 23, 2007 6:40am

With a nick like 'themindfantastic' you might understand why Derren Brown is someone I have to say is a sort of idol of mine. You really should check out his other shows/specials that one you mentioned is kind of old actually. The most recent is Trick or Treat, in which he takes a person who has asked to be part of the show and gives them a chance to choose a card, which is a rotational ambigram saying 'Trick' or 'Treat' matters which side is held up (allows for him to keep to what he wants to do to them despite whatever they pick) if they choose trick they get something not so good done to them, like going into a photobooth and coming out in Morocco, drive out one day and find themselves waking to have an 'out of body experience' of their own death, to having themselves mentally displaced with a ventriloquist dummy, or for a short period of time being insane running around a public square making a complete fool of themselves. If its a treat you get something good, like being taught how to play poker with such skill to play against some of the top players in the UK, or relearning the enjoyment of playing the piano by forgetting you ever knew how to play it in the first place and learning how to play it all over again. Look on youtube, quite a number of clips from every series he as done, and all of them very impressive and short enough to watch different clips.

CES Restricting Photography of Gadgets Out for All to See

December 5, 2007 11:44am

CES 'CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW' So the consumer who unless they go to these things, won't be able to look and see pictures of the 'neato shiny' thing they have to offer. This is a serious case of shooting themselves in the foot. They only get to see it when its beside the NBA/Rap star on the beach or in space or whatever background they have chosen, doing everything they can to make it seem much better than it could ever really be. If its so damn good, let it be seen and stand on its own merits. If its not good why is it THERE? If its good let people take images of it and tell friends and actually I dunno GENERATE BUZZ By the best advertising there is... people talking about it.

Deutsche Grammophon launches giant, DRM-free classical music store

December 1, 2007 9:47am

I will have to agree with Steven E McDonald, this is more towards the 'decent' edge as opposed to the "by Agreeing to these terms, we get to eat your babies" type nastiness. It could be in part a translation problem, but also there is the obvious case of making a copy and deleting the original is the only way to duplicate taking a vinyl record and selling it pre-digital times. The DG Catalog has admittedly some of the best works ever put to a recording medium, a lot of them woefully out of print for quite sometime, having access to them without DRM and high bitrates, is a serious stride into the good books for most people... but as it always is there are those people who always worry someone is going to do something perfectly natural with music like share it with a friend, and lawyers seem to overly cautious with their wording not understanding how sometimes these clauses are unenforceable and just look stupid.

End of the pool hustler

November 24, 2007 10:01pm

re:REMF3

Also the editors of BoingBoing (or some of them at least) do have a soft spot for Grifter stories, noting how they loved 'The Sting' with Redford & Newman (who doesn't love that film) and even mentioning Dakan's novels Geek Mafia and Mile Zero. I wouldn't count Trudeau as a artist, but he was most definately a confidence man. I think the fact that simple confidence men are to be reviled, but the true artist.... well thats something else entirely.

What do political poster designs say?

November 24, 2007 9:22am

I found this illuminating, they are of course one persons opinion, but informed ones based on understanding of aspects of graphic design. I remember an article during I believe the last election that told of the Republicans in power occasionally spending money to specifically find ways to use their language and symbolism more effectively. While Democrats in power tended to spend money/time on social programs and the like, and because of this in a lot of ways the Democrats were in essence losing out on the language and symbolism, which was hurting them in the minds of the populace, or so the article had alluded to. In a way this is the same thing, people using models and theories of communication to bring across an image about the candidate in question, which language and symbolism plays an integral part of.

Video of man tasered to death

November 15, 2007 1:37pm

Actually living in Vancouver this video has been kind of been on most people's minds... as the RCMP initially took possession of the original, saying that it would be returned in a week, it took them three almost four... only after the owner raised a fuss legally and publically. It was then shown to the mother of the man involved, and its assumed with her permission only then given out. It was released quite openly to many press organizations and probably beyond, unedited so that no one could say that it was tampered with or altered and therefore cry conspiracy.

It was played on MANY local newscasts in what appeared to be its entirety, with warnings to NOT watch given its graphic nature. At least here you have the option to not press play, if you were watching the news last night unless you turned off the TV, went to get a soda, or did something to avoid watching the first 15 mins of the news, this is all you pretty much saw at the local news time of 6pm local here. Is it right to post? Well was it right to air? Anyone can debate that question with no resolution.

Was the RCMP correct in their handling of this situation? That too could be argued with no resolution, however it doesn't help that people dying while being handled or within actual custody of the RCMP is on the rise.

My opinion is that, in an international airport I would think that there could be more people available that speak a good number of languages, because in a lot of ways this was simply a failure of communication, and anyone who has attempted to communicate with someone who doesn't share at least some language with you can be an exasperating experience, add a very confusing jet lagged agitated state and you get some very frustrated angry situations easily happening. There are those who would say that One should know the language at least a bit of the place you are going to, and while that is ideal, here in Canada such a stance is less emphasized than simply attempting to provide materials and translators for people who speak languages other than english or french (our two official languages). Finding someone who could linguistically identify and perhaps speak a little polish would have been a less disasterous option here, and one that has precedent here so many times over that its horrifying it wasn't thought about.

No friends yet.
