Teen discovers bat hiding in her bra

July 8, 2008 11:29am

@ cpt tim

Me too! Except mine is 23 pounds and bites me everytime I try to take my underwear away. I'm also pretty sure I couldn't wear him my clothes for half a work day and not notice him in there.

Where the Hell is Matt: a silly dance in 42 countries that will make you grin like a fool

July 1, 2008 1:24pm

I was instantly jealous as soon as I saw a few seconds of it. I've already been to a few of those places, but oh how I want to quit my job right this moment!

Roku: $100 gadget for watching Netflix movies on your TV

June 25, 2008 3:53pm

I just use a regular windows box that's stuck behind my entertainment center with a decent video and sound card in it. It streams the Netflix instant movies just fine. Plus, I can show picture galleries to guests, stream music and non-Netflix videos, and browse the web from my couch. I don't have a fancy remote control though (just a wireless mouse).

FCC wants a magic, porn-free wireless Internet

June 25, 2008 9:13am

This sounds as retarded as trying to move all porn to the .xxx TLD. I have never figured out why there is this desire in the US to pretend like porn is harmful and that no one really wants to look at it (they all do). I work for a decent sized porn company and we have to keep 10 people on staff just to answer phone calls from idiots that swear that they never bought porn on the internet/they would never look at that kind of thing/porn is bad mmkay.

A Morning at Intelligentsia Coffee Part 2

June 20, 2008 9:17am

I'm so glad I saw this! When I was vacationing in Brazil, I saw the vacuum pot used in quite a few restaurants and immediately wanted one but couldn't figure out what they were called. Guess I'm going shopping today :)

New Sedaris audiobook is a DRM-free download

June 9, 2008 3:44pm

In the "coming soon" section on eMusic, I see "David Sedaris | 6/12", so its likely they are going to add this new book at that time.

Jesus Made Me Puke: Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right

May 28, 2008 12:46pm

The Daily Show link above didn't work for me (they helpfully showed me an ad before telling me it wasn't available outside of Canada though)

I believe it was supposed to be this interview with Matt Taibbi:

Fasting may prevent jetlag

May 26, 2008 11:11am

No way I could fast before flying. Eating is the only thing that keeps me from being nauseous and nervous at the airport.

Going from Pacific Time -> GMT, I like to arrive early in the morning in Europe, and pretend like I just woke up. I push myself all day to do normal things and go to bed at a what would have been a normal bed time for GMT time. Its a hard and tiring day (nothing a lot of coffee can't help) but once I hit the mattress that night I sleep like a rock, and wake up feeling pretty normal the next day.

Book of bad tattoos

May 20, 2008 12:58pm

I'm so glad that I found a nice, professional and talented tattoo artist that won't give me some crazy zombie tattoo!

Good comments: Adam Rice and Phillip Lamb, on their technical problems

April 11, 2008 1:14pm

I got that "entered wrong" error a couple days ago. I think it was a session timeout, fwiw. It only happened once, and I haven't seen it today. I'm using FF 2 on Mac OSX 10.5.

Nice passion flower photo

April 11, 2008 1:07pm

Passion flowers are so beautiful and crazy looking, but mine always grew too voraciously and I had to cut it back a lot of the time. Also, I could never get mine to produce fruit... it would just tease me with these small grape sized things that eventually fell off.

New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"

April 11, 2008 1:05pm

I would have given him the cellphone, but certainly if my son asked me if he could see if he was capable of riding the subway alone, I would let him. Don't we want our children to grow up to be responsible and independent adults?

Identity thieves slash prices

April 10, 2008 3:05pm

Unfortunately it seems that personal data leaks are so frequent that the stolen credit card market is saturated. Sucks that our bank information is so common now that thieves can't even give it away...

China's instant cities -- jaw-dropping National Geo feature

April 3, 2008 1:33pm

From the article (pg 3)

Director Wang told me that approximately one thousand peasants had been relocated, as well as exactly 108 separate mountains and hills.

Damn those hills, always getting in the way of progress...

Fuji makes you sign bizarre EULA to buy a camera

April 2, 2008 5:37pm

#31 Takuan

perhaps some total innocents will be fined or jailed or killed depending if they are enemy combatant-coloured

I lol'ed and then I was sad because its sorta true :(

British Airways loses 15-20,000 bags since Thursday at supremely b0rked Heathrow Terminal 5

March 29, 2008 9:49pm

Now I am sooo happy that I chose to land in Gatwick instead of Heathrow for my vacation in a couple weeks :)

Super-premium theater chain in the US to sell $35 movie tickets

March 28, 2008 9:52am

#12 The Cinetopia theater is in Vancouver _Washington_ not Canada. Vancouver BC is a pretty awesome place to visit and I highly recommend it (even if it doesn't have a fancy full service cinema).

Creepy looking bug from Brazilian Boing Boing reader

March 14, 2008 12:37pm

Brazil is an excellent place to find crazy bugs. This is the weird dude who landed on our boat when we were in the Amazon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24665730@N02/2333747134/

Pro golfer hits balls at hawk until he kills it, then denies he tried to kill it

March 7, 2008 1:14pm

I think he intended to hit it but did not intend to kill it. He was just being stupid.

I threw a golf-ball sized rock across my yard at a squirrel digging in my garden. It hit the squirrel in the head and he fell over. I was immediately sad and felt like an idiot. I didn't kill him and he wasn't bleeding but he certainly didn't get up for a while... I probably should have known better than to throw a rock at an animal but sometimes we all do stupid things.

and btw I also adopt cats from the shelter :)

TED 2008: Crow vending machine maker Joshua Klein

February 29, 2008 5:24pm

I wonder if the crows that have been tearing shingles off my roof are trying to get into a peanut vending machine...

TokyoFlash Tibida LED watch -- with binary mode! Three being given away gratis

February 29, 2008 12:58pm

I love these watches, but my wrist is super small, and I am disappointed that they don't fit very well. :(

The watch face is so large that it sits on my arm in a funny way, and people often tease me about wearing one of those prison tracking bracelets, heh.

Raccoon takes cat's food: video

February 13, 2008 11:35am

The cat looks like he is really asking the owner with the video camera for some help with his food-stealing racoon buddy.

Spore release date announced: Sep 7, 2008.

February 12, 2008 11:05am

I can't wait until this game is released - I loved playing SimLife back in the day and I'm so totally excited to try this one out.

50 Years of LEGO: Nine Sets I Have Known and Loved

January 28, 2008 2:53pm

I spent so much time with my brother playing with (or fighting over) our Legos. I loved the blacktron stuff! It makes me kind of sad now to see the Lego aisle so small and pitiful in the store these days. I swear when I was younger (and shorter) that the Lego aisle was huge and went on forever.

Mathematics of waiting for the bus

January 23, 2008 12:15pm

The bus stop after mine often fills the bus to capacity. Walking to the next stop would never make sense for me, since I might not actually get on if I wait at a later stop. I suppose I could walk to the previous stop, but then, that's up hill, and who wants to do all that work? :)

Photo-sharing for pictures taken where you are not allowed to take them

December 4, 2007 7:05pm

This summer I took a picture of my boyfriend and I waiting in a long line of people all wanting to pay to get to the top of the Empire State Building, and was greeted with several shouts of "NO CAMERAS!!" from the security guards. Apparently, if you take pictures inside the Empire State, you are a terrorist. That, or you are trying to document your summer vacation in NYC. I'm not sure which excuse is more likely.

How to stop restaurant tip fraud

November 15, 2007 1:27pm

@23: I agree that a living wage that isn't based on tips could make a huge difference.

I've had small jobs here and there serving people and in my experience many people treat servers like they are no better than a piece of crap. I think there is this strange belief that if you are serving food, you must be too stupid to get a "real" job somewhere else. And, as everyone knows, if your server is too stupid to know any better, its ok to order them around like a monkey and then give them a 5% tip.
I don't think bad tips excuse fraudulent behavior, but I definitely think it encourages disgruntled and underpaid workers to move in that direction.

I Want Sandy - perfect productivity email bot is free and public

November 14, 2007 9:30am

Cory wrote "Sandy herself is based on Tim O'Reilly's stellar personal assistant, also named Sandy."

So it seems to me that the choice to use a female identity and name is more a tribute to an awesome assistant rather than some belief that women should be servants.
