Sure. During World War II, pennies were made of steel to save copper for the war effort. People tend to change real quick when needed.

Vanishing Of The Bees documentary

Papyrus? Nooo!

Seriously though, this is a great idea for a documentary and looks really well done.

I hope it is funded so it's finished as well.

Video of YAPMM (Yet Another Perpetual Motion Machine)

January 8, 2008 11:17am

If this is a perpetual motion machine, why isn't it running when the video starts? I suppose he had to demonstrate how it works, but if I got one started, I'd certainly not want to shut it off.

I suppose that's why I'm not a scientist, though.

Universal Music CEO: Record industry can't tell when geeks are lying to us about technology

November 27, 2007 10:16am

It's hard for me to fathom that a record exec wouldn't want to entirely cut the cost of pressing records. Selling MP3s is way more cost effective than selling CDs.

Even if Mr. Morris doesn't know this, it seems he's in the position to figure it out or at least have someone explain it to him.

The first corporation to actually give people what they want is going to make a ton of money, in my opinion.

I, along with most other people, don't mind paying for a record, assuming I'll be able to listen to it how I choose.

Interesting article, nonetheless.

How to stop restaurant tip fraud

November 15, 2007 10:12am

It's kind of amazing to hear all these stories.

I had a really shitty waiter at an Applebees in Arizona once. So, naturally, I left him a .37 tip. (Yes, I realize this is extremely rude, but this guy deserved it.)

When I got home, I discovered that he had written in an extra 10$ for his troubles.

I notified the Applebees with no good response- only an offer to refund the 10$ sans apology. So, I followed my way up the corporate chain and ended up with a fairly decent gift card for my troubles.

They never let the guy go. It seems stealing from customer's is appropriate behavior.

I definitely would like to see an RSS, or other functionality. Is this data being displayed anywhere? If not, what's the point in favoriting?

Thanks for the wonderful blog and new features though.

Radiohead DRM-free "box-set"

November 6, 2007 11:25am

"But if that's the case, how come Radiohead isn't on iTunes, when other EMI artists are?"

Perhaps, and this is pure speculation, their contract states that mp3s can only be distributed as an entire album. If that were the case, iTunes would only be considered if they could offer that alternative. I'm assuming they refused to change their rules.

Radiohead DRM-free "box-set"

November 6, 2007 7:24am

Radiohead are a bunch of cash-cows, and EMI is there to cash in.

Half the fun in buying a new (or old) Radiohead CD is thumbing through Stanley's artwork while listening to the music.

Not tempting in any way. I'll put my CDs in a box and be just as happy.

Oh, and I think they still believe their records should be listened to entirely through. They were recorded and assembled cohesively for a reason.

Any advice for students?

How do you deal with plagiarism?

At what point does inspiration become imitation?

What question have you been dying someone to ask you?

Not only is it old, it's veeerrry trashily written. That reporter should be fired, hired again, and fired a second time for good measure. Nobody should print stories like that and call it "reporting".

The new times commonly report stories in that fashion.
