Apple Geniuses to get even more douchey

April 29, 2008 3:41pm

I'm really offended by this post. The word "hatred" is too easily used in a general, sweeping manner against a group of people where you only know a very few of them. You don't know each individual Apple store employee and throwing out words like "twat" "douche" and "loathsome" is easy to do online, but how about you call one of them these things to their face. I've worked jobs that were a facade where I had to be nice to all sorts of really annoying customers and it was hard work keeping my feelings to myself.

It's a fun looking device and I have wanted one for awhile. Once they can actually sell one in Canada I'll be ecstatic.

HOWTO knit a skeleton cardigan

March 7, 2008 5:10pm

#1 do a search for knit or knitting on Boing Boing and you will see there have been quite a few posts of cool patterns in the past. I'm not sure how you are classifying people who knit but it doesn't sound like you are well informed. Knitting and craft have resurged to become hugely popular these days, have a look a www.ravelry.com for an example of a fabulous social networking site specifically aimed at people who knit and crochet.

Why hardware ebook readers are a dead end (for now, anyway)

March 5, 2008 12:52am

I agree that it's not a case of "never will be better." Eventually ebook readers will have screens that are clear enough you don't get eye-strain from them, the batteries will last long enough, the interface will be intuitive and mostly invisible, and the price will be cheap enough to get people's interest. I still think that they are better used with things like reference books, dictionaries and textbooks.

Why hardware ebook readers are a dead end (for now, anyway)

March 5, 2008 12:13am

There is something very pleasing about a book. It feels right in my hands. Text on paper is pleasing and if it's a paperback, it can be shoved in my purse or knapsack in case I have some waiting time while I'm out. The experience of quietly sitting reading a book is something that can't be replaced easily with an e-book reader. It's also a case of getting away from technology for a time.

Bill to ban restaurants serving obese people

February 5, 2008 1:12pm

I love how it's always the "fat people" who are at fault for eating too much. They are visually easy targets, and society tells us that's ugly, so we want to clean up the mess. Why are we not targeting the food companies that make processed food loaded in calories, salt, fats and chemicals? Why are we not after the advertisers that push cheap and easy food on us when we're tired? Please go after the people that want you to eat fast food, frozen pizza, and microwave dinners, then perhaps we'll have less fat people in the world.

Florida school board approves McDonald's report-cards and school-bus audio ads

January 19, 2008 9:28am

I'm sorry, it's crass to get up in arms about advertising in buses or on report cards? I'm horrified that kids would be subjected to advertising there, especially sound when it's hard to avoid. I understand that schools need support financially, but this isn't the way to do it.

Canada puts Gitmo on torture watchlist

January 17, 2008 6:17pm

Various comments above all assume that the Canadian government has any power at all over the U.S. government. Look to the Free Trade Agreement, the softwood lumber accord, or perhaps even the Arctic waters disagreements. The Omar Khadr case may not have had enough attention by the Canadian government, but no matter what attention it gets, I don't think Canada would be able to make a difference. To me the issue isn't whether he is guilty, but where he is being held and under what conditions. He needs to be tried as a Canadian citizen. I don't hold out much hope though, having heard a statement recently where the U.S. said that it had the right to grab citizens out of the U.K. with no notice or permission. What chance does Canada have?

From Nazi collaborator to Fortune 500 - companies that got rich on the Reich

January 8, 2008 2:38am

Cory, you may be Canadian but the rest of the Boing Boing group are Americans, and the focus of many of the posts are American, whether it's talking about gadgets or politics. I'm not saying all the posts are, that's certainly not true, as I've seen many international topics, but the United States has big presence in the world and Boing Boing just reflects that. I have noticed over the years that things like events tend towards California for example, where many of the contributors are from. That's understable since many of their contacts would be in their own town. I would love to see a calendar of events as a feature of Boing Boing, where the readers could contribute unique happenings from their own area.

Thanks for doing a great job guys, I love all the fascinating stuff I find here.

#4 are you American? I'm only asking because I'm Canadian and trying to estimate the delay on mine shipping across the border. :) I'm so excited to get the chance to finally see it.

It's not the job of a technology company to feed people, obviously. They are filling a need just as much as a food distribution charity fills a need. Many parts of the world are technology poor and the people there aren't directly starving. The technology this provides will give children a more up to date education and that will give them more options to make money to support their families, thus providing more food in the long term.

Radio show about gaming in China: propaganda, paranoia and gold-farming

October 18, 2007 3:43pm

This was a fascinating show, especially discussing the conflict between gold farmers who desperately need the paycheck they get from it, and the gamers that target them for pvp in games like Warcraft. I was fascinated by the discussion of various methods for identifying gold farmers and how racism can become so wrapped up in it.

I'm not sure where any of the commenters talking about "free" health care are getting their facts, but I'm a Canadian citizen and I pay a fee every month to help pay for health care. Yes, it is a nominal fee, but I pay it. In other provinces, the fee comes out of taxes, but it is still paid by citizens.

I've never had a three month wait to get an appointment. It's always been under two weeks for a doctor's appointment or lab test. Now I'm sure that in some cities the three month figure is true, but not every one by a long shot.

Socialized medicine in this country is under strain, yes, but you can still get medical help if you are poor or disadvantaged and we are trying to fix the problems. I value this system and hope that the United States can find answers for their own.

New AT&T terms of service: We'll cut off your Internet connection for criticizing us

October 11, 2007 11:12pm

Jennifer Emick said: I'm sure I'm not the only person who finds the level of comment control here disturbing-

Teresa Neilsen Hayden said The lurkers can speak for themselves. Or not. But I hadn't heard that they'd deputized you to speak for them.

For a moderator who is supposedly quite worried about rudeness and personal attacks I found that quite rude and personal. I hardly think Jennifer was assuming to speak for all of us. I think rather, that she was inviting people to speak up who agreed with her. I will state then, that I do find that the level of moderation seems a bit drastic, but I do understand that it is a difficult job and one that I wouldn't want to take on. I look forward to more of these debates in future, this is still a fascinating part of the 'Web.

Can "girl games" transcend shopping, fashion and babies?

October 3, 2007 11:06am

I'm a woman that has always played whatever was the popular games at the time starting way back with Sierra Games adventures through Doom and Half-Life, The Sims, and now I play MMO's frequently, such as City of Heroes, and Lord of the Rings. I like good games, with challenging content and I don't go looking for "girl games" in particular. I hate the idea that we have to gender our games.
