The steampunx meme has grown tiresome, but this is actually pretty awesome. It's like a kindle, but not portable and even slower. BUT STEAMPUNK.
Fuji makes you sign bizarre EULA to buy a camera
April 2, 2008 1:17pm
The full EULA gives a bit more detail on "Business use". I'm guessing that selling IR/UV cameras falls under different legislation in certain locales, and thus the "only for business purposes." Their primary markets for these cameras is Legal and scientific use.
This is protecting them from future claims of pervo photography at the mall, I'm guessing.

That's an awfully shiny rainbow apple to have ever graced an amiga.
But count me in the same "local but never new it" camp.

If you guys are taking steam showers, you're all very fond of third degree burns.
Water Vapor is generally what you're going to find during a shower, above a body of water in winter, etc etc etc.

Nice Northern Brewer glass. I've alwasys thought of them as local, I guess I didn't realize their presence was that widespread.
Sweet Black Jesus I Have Unboxed a Heineken BeerTender

Currently, I believe the Heineken keg is the only one that'll work in this cooler, as it's the only one that's pressurized. Most other brewers (the german selection, a few craft brewers I know of) use Gravity-powered 5L miniKegs. AKA, the pull-out spout and the beer drains into your cup.
The Heineken keg is unique in that it uses the concept of the Guinness "Nitrogen Widget" and takes it to the next level- a CO2 canister inside the keg to keep the beer from getting oxidized and provide enough pressure to push the beer out the top of the keg, similar to a traditional Keg.

Zombie Wars: Dawn of the Dead Producer Sues Over Dead Rising Game
February 26, 2008 10:22am
The Dead Rising play mechanic is what I characterized as oddly Japanese. The concept that if you played through the game multiple times and restarted once you failed... your levels stayed intact was tough to come to grips with.
This was really hard for me to grasp, as I think one should be able to advance through the game from the get go, and achieve 100% completion with some level of dedication- but it's nearly impossible in this game. Instead, play through the beginning game 4-5 times, and suddenly you're at level 12, and progress through the rest of the game now becomes feasible.
It's a almost an extension of the RE game concept, where the best ending requires that you finish the game while wielding only uncooked tofu and a fuzzy slipper, all the while never utilizing any of the savepoints.

Behemoth printer is practically a wall
February 18, 2008 10:07pm
Comparing a web press to a printer isn't really fair, but I'm going to do it anways. I've had to deal with a printer at work that's capable of somewhere around 10,000 (dual-sided- so 20,000 printed) ppm.
It's mindblowing to watch this thing. It's got two full sets of plates, and you can change one set of plates out on the fly. So when you need to change the book you're printing, there's no need to stop the web- just load in the new ones, deal with 10 seconds of "waste" (1500+ pages!!!) and there you go.
Aside from a lot of continual tweaking and monitoring, the biggest piece of manual intervention is getting a new roll of paper, marking up the seam and fresh edges, and getting it near the machine. The press will automatically put it into position, run it through the web, and keep on printing. From there, the paper goes through the plates, the web is cut into ribbons, and then folded, cut, and collected into signatures. The machine even neatly stacks the signatures on a pressboard backing and then straps the whole assembly tight so it can be taken off to the binding area.
Once you deal with this thing, going into the rooms full of iGens is a lot less impressive. :)
I also think the Timsons Presses cost a bit more than 120k Euros.

Those things above and below the R-Type look like Options, but I think I'm mixing and matching R-type and Gradius. Does r-type have the same kind of power-up satellite mechanics?
