Again and Again: The OS X desktop as music video

May 12, 2008 4:16pm

I don't think I've ever been so offended by a cool idea. I hope apple was paying somebody off to make that. It started getting bad once they started using the generic itunes visualizer and screensaver, and don't even get me started about how it ends with the "user" or whoever buying the track off of itunes.

You want to see cool art done with osx's desktop, go to chicago and check out a I

Pranksters (?) hood a Google Street View cam with a plastic bag

May 8, 2008 7:55am

haha... I didn't know they streetview mapped anywhere in Alaska yet. I wonder if this means they might get around to finally getting the roads to match up to the satellite photos around my home town.

I'll have to pester my friends that go to UAF... see if they know anything about it. I really wouldn't put it past those college kids, there's not a whole lot to do up in F-banks. Plus, it looks a little to securely placed around the camera too.

After looking at it, it doesn't really just "magically" appear while the car was going along at full speed. It first appears on 4th which is some side road behind a strip mall sort of complex. I bet some kids slipped it on while the driver stopped to get some food, but it also makes me wonder what sort of shady things are going on out side of that mall.

Datamancer's steampunk LCD is gorgeous, but is it really steampunk?

April 24, 2008 10:10am

I think the closest thing to a steampunk monitor you'll find are the ones on the computers in the movie Brazil. The tiny little CRTs that were magnified via a big lenses...

Beamz: laser theremin thingie on sale at Sharper Image

April 24, 2008 10:07am

600 dollars for basically 6 on/off triggers? But they're freaking LASER beams man...

It must have some sort of really fancy software to justify the cost of this eyesore.

'Architect's Birdfeeder': acrylic, flat-pack, no fasteners required

April 16, 2008 8:11am

brilliant of them to have simple images of all of the pieces of the feeder right on their main page. With a little bit of work I could totally cut one of these out for free with the laser cutter at my place of work...

Brain surgery with regular Bosch power drill

March 18, 2008 4:50pm

Everyone keeps talking about the importance of the drill, but seriously, all the drill does is spin the bit, more or less (and I wouldn't trust a drill that claims to do much else then that). A $30k drill is only as useful as the tool you use to actually make the hole in the person's head.

World's most complete recorded music collection on eBay

February 18, 2008 8:20pm

god, I wish I could just get my hands on this collection for long enough to make a digital archive of it all... I think I might need to get a few more hard drives though; as well as take at least a year off to do nothing but record vinyl.

alas, a man can dream...

Apple TV HD Rental Quality Pretty Good, Says iLounge

odd... from your resized photos the color quality looks better on the hd cable pic. The appletv shot looks all blue tinted.

MythBusters tackles "plane on a conveyor belt problem"

January 28, 2008 4:02pm

I just have to get that off my chest...I live in Alaska, and I hate when people refer to the weather in Alaska as if the whole place is exactly the same. It's twice the size of Texas, and for the record it was a balmy 32 degrees in my hometown last week when I left to go back to school.

Painter's Pyramids Let You Paint Both Sides at Once

January 18, 2008 11:25pm

When I helped my dad spray finish on doors we would always just put two long screws in the top and bottom of the door and hang it off of the screws on a couple of saw-horses. Unless your terribly tall you would never see the screw holes, plus, you could still move the door before it dries without ruining the finish if you need to.
Why spend $7 when scavenged screws are free?
