Hunt for the kill switch in microchips

What I find is wonderful is that we've made it this in the comments far before somebody mentions "Skynet."

Hunt for the kill switch in microchips
April 30, 2008 7:57pm
If they have a kill switch, won't you have to move a complicated set of levers into bizarre positions, recite your access code, and then wait fifteen minutes while the computer (in a female voice) counts down?
"You have three minutes to self destruct."
Meanwhile, did somebody order a bunch of clones? I can't seem to find the purchase order, but they were just dropped off at loading dock 'G'
Clock sculpture with more than 150 analog hands spells out the name of the hour
April 22, 2008 9:45am
That is so cool. Agreed.
Behind TV "military analysts," the Pentagon's hidden hand
April 20, 2008 2:21pm
So maybe a line was crossed with this operation, but the effects have not been devastating like the article implies.
I know probably a hundred people (friends and family) that have pointed to the experts on TV over the last seven years to support their views on the war. People that thing I'm a wingnut because I prefer to try and dig and analyze information for myself, instead of going "oh, he's in a uniform, of course he's telling us the truth."
Remember Powell's big presentation at the UN about the germ trucks? Same thing. High ranking officials would never mislead us about something THIS important, would they?
Secret history of Infocom's abortive sequel to The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy text adventure, Milliways
April 18, 2008 2:37pm
I loved that game. Played it in college on a buddies computer (my computer had an 8" floppy drive and the game we had was on 5", so had to use his)
IMF: one-in-four chance of global recession caused by US debt crisis
April 9, 2008 11:02am
No way!
Weren't they just saying how strong the economy was? Like, two weeks ago?
(and by "they," of course I'm referring to Mr. "Mission Accomplished" hisownself)
Special license plates shield officials from traffic tickets
April 7, 2008 2:01pm
I'm guessing Dwight and Michell Storay aren't feeling as confidential now ;)
In Texas, if you have out of state plates, the toll road folks won't try and track you down if you're caught on camera - they lack the time or manpower to look up, for example, Missouri plates. And no common database to pull from. At least that's how it was last time I looked into it (same goes for red light cameras)
I'm tired of paying the toll for everyone else, too, but whatcha gonna do?
The Mike Wallace Interview

It's like a monochrome Larry King!
Except, well, not at all.
University prof says students can't sell notes from his classes because it violates his copyright
April 4, 2008 2:31pm
That said. There shouldn't be any need to pay for class notes. Many student societies maintain their members notes and even past exam questions, which (at least during my time at university) are available for the asking. The only cost is that of operating the copy machine.
If you are running a company called "how I got an A dot com," then you pay people to take the notes, and people who don't want to attend class pay you to get the notes so they can pass the final exam.
That's what this is about. Not borrowing somebody else's notes from class.
University prof says students can't sell notes from his classes because it violates his copyright
April 4, 2008 1:56pm
If it were the RIAA, they would be going after the people buying the notes, not the company publishing them, it seems.
From another comment, I would hope the notes for his class that you buy are a bit more complete than a movie review would be. Otherwise you'd get something like "I give his chapter on wildlife introduced in Colorado two thumbs up!" Not terribly useful.

Debating the feasibility of an in-flight liquid bomb

I wanted to take a picture of the dedicated "unopened beer and wine only" bin at the Pittsburgh airport, but was afraid of the gorrilla like guys being told what to do by nerdy beauracrat types.
I mean, surely they weren't going to save the unopened beers for anything. They could have high explosives in them!

This is a job for that cat from 'Hot Fuzz,' I think.
Bike racers line up for bio-break
March 26, 2008 1:02pm
Isn't this why they have commercial breaks on TV?
I must say, for a bunch of guys taking a leak, it sure is colorful. You gotta give them that.

There are many, many songs that the Muppets can add to. I love me some muppets.

From a quick google search, (I'm not a historian), it seems Kenelm Digby is seen as the father of the modern wine bottle, and perhaps it was partly due to him that they arrived at a standard size.
According to the Wikipedia folks, it seems there is not exactly a single standard, however.
I'm sure the internet will quickly tell me if I am wrong...

Why? Because you are suspicious. Or just different. Or maybe I just wanna pick on somebody because I'm having a bad day. I don't need a reason, but you do.

Rules against questioning security make us less secure
March 11, 2008 7:11am
Paranoia does not bring security.
The govt, and the people, both need to be reminded of that once in a while.
Many security measures in place now are nonsense, even if they were well-intended in the first place. I could provide a giant list, but that would just waste everyone's time; we all know examples.
About that ginormous beef recall
February 18, 2008 6:11pm
It's not a particularly good time to be a cow, come to think about it.
Think Chik-Fil-A can work this into their ads somehow?
U.S. will try to shoot down spy satellite gone bad
February 17, 2008 6:47pm
I don't understand why they don't just Initiate the Self Destruct Sequence, or (in the case of Bond-style satellite) push the big red button that says "Do Not Push."
I agree with the idea that somebody just wants to lob million $ missiles and see what happens.

FBI to build $1Bn biometrics database

Okay:
$1 billion. Please. And Iraq war was supposed to be over in "weeks, not months."
Will Halliburton get the bid?
Also: we have fifty states that can't share between each other such basic things as vehicle registration. Let's go for the low hanging fruit before we want to index the millions of humans. Let's get to where a toll road in Texas will recognize a license plate from Arkansas.

I know his heart is in the right place, but I can't help but notice something.
The difference between "best" and "worst" is basically a matter of size.
Sonic fries (best) have 2.87 calories per gram
Dairy Queen (worst) is actually slightly better at 2.61 calories per gram. But DQ's large is bigger. (you can still top it by getting the Sonic Size)
So... eat less. That makes sense.
War on the Unexpected -- Schneier's dynamite essay on the War on Terror
November 1, 2007 10:45am
The war on terror should end about 25 years after we win the war on drugs, based on when each "war" was begun.
In the meantime, there's still time for our kids to get their Homeland Security degrees so they can cash in on some of the irrational spending.
FEMA workers play role of reporters
October 26, 2007 2:26pm
I didn't think the government would have decided the people it's supposed to serve were superfluous this quickly. I figured we had at least a couple more disasters before we got to this point.
I hear the bottled water is already being delivered to the Superdome, so hey, that's an improvement.
Nice job.
Van Halen: recorded Jump goof at concert
October 19, 2007 2:28pm
Wow, whoda thunk it could happen?
I watched Tull's Isle of Wight video last night. Man, people were stoned back then, but they could put on a show.
Lap dancers "in heat" get better tips

I hereby volunteer to aid in further research. Bring on the lap dances, ladies - and no fair telling me if you're particularly fertile, I'll have to figure it out on my own.

More on the leaked Qaeda video controversy
October 10, 2007 10:46am
Well, the release poster wasn't finished yet, and the Happy Meal deal with McDonalds fell through because of how this was handled.
Tsk, tsk.
Al Jazeera never had these problems.

I love GTD, and would love to buy that man a beer.
Also love TimeTo software, which is designed to complement his system...
(note: I may love his advice, but I still have a hard time following it. As a procrastinator I am hard core.)
US Navy calls MySpace kids an "Alien Life Force"
September 28, 2007 12:20pm
Sorry, my last comment made it sound like I care WAY more than I do about this.
I think it's a cycle, I have a couple of kids that are itching to get into Special Forces (but only if you get a cheat for "unlimited ammo" and "invincibility") but they haven't lowered their recruiting standards to eleven years old yet.
US Navy calls MySpace kids an "Alien Life Force"

Speaking on behalf of Somewhat Aliens everywhere, I blame the current administration for failing to address NPJ standards.
Good thing the Military won't put up with things like misplaced hundreds of thousands of weapons, and our intelligence services scrutinize everything with a fine tooth comb before passing it on to the administration.
Okay, that's enough, I'm going back to my truck-mounted biowarfare lab now.
Texas legislator explains her fraudulent voting on lack of "bathroom breaks"

Careful, or next thing you know the "rule of law" types will ignore subpoenas and the like.

That, for me, helped clinch that time as the glory days of SNL... count me as another who saw this live (at the ripe age of 13).
