Leet Lord's Prayer

April 24, 2008 6:23am

Could someone slightly more fluent in Leet post a translation? I spent 5 minutes trying to just understand the first line, and it's already translated...

Untooned Homer and real world Mario

I just realized how much my grandpa looked like Homer. Creepy.

TSA: X-ray of MacBook Air may be "sensitive security information"

March 21, 2008 6:25am

When I was a kid, I used to ask if I could watch our things go through the metal detector. They would almost always say yes. My parents would put me through the metal detector first, and the security people (Were they using TSA in the early 90's?) would take me around the back, and let me watch. They would show me the different buttons, and tell me how it worked. It was one of the highlights of travel, second to going into the cockpit and meeting the pilots and seeing the display panels. I even got to sit in the captain's seat once.

Too bad this can never happen when I have kids...

Wikihistory: sf story about the revert-wars among time-travellers -- "everybody kills Hitler on their first trip"

March 19, 2008 7:34am

It reminded me of "A Sound of Thunder" By Ray Bradbury. The main character goes back in time and accidentally kills a bug (iirc) and ends up changing the future he's from. Rather similar to going back and killing your ancestor.

But it makes me think about the Grandfather Paradox, if you go back in time, and kill your grandfather, you were never born. And if you were never born, you couldn't have killed your grandfather, so you would be born.

Silly time travel loopholes :)

Map of choose your own adventure book

March 8, 2008 12:32pm

I remember, as a child, reading one that dealt with a black hole. I think it may have the same sort of thing as the UFO one because there was a couple of pages that the characters went "through" the black hole to a completely different universe.

I wanted to find out what I needed to do to not get sucked into spaghetti, so I worked backwards. I would see what page sent me to the page that the good ending was on. Eventually, I found a page that no other page referenced to.

Now that makes sense. And my brain's been thinking about that since 3rd grade. I can still remember the color of the pages (I had taken it to the beach and the pages turned yellow/brown), and the picture that was on the opposite page.

Documentary about women who collect fake babies

February 14, 2008 8:46am

My boyfriend works in a small retail store, and knows most of the customers that come in. There is one lady who wheels around one of these baby dolls in a carriage, and even feeds it using one of the toy bottles that empty when turned over and fill when right side up. That's fine.

The real problem is that she "abuses" it. She'll pick it up, and ram it's head against a counter. She'll hit it, punch it. Swear at it. On a couple of occasions, tourists or non-knowing customers have called the cops on her for abusing her baby. When the cops get there, and see who it is, they usually tell her "[Name], it's not nice to do that to your baby, now go home, it needs to go to bed." The woman will then check out, and promptly leave calmly.

Only once did they try to take it away. She put up so much of a hassle, she got arrested, and was apparently put in a hospital for a while.

It's apparently a decent coping mechanism, yet still very creepy...

Video game needlepoint

January 21, 2008 12:30pm

Actually, I commonly use a program to design my cross stitch patterns, and I've done a few video game patterns. In fact, I'm currently working on a comic book cover.

But what I don't get is why such a big deal is being made about it.
