Album oriented music is a relatively new concept. So this argument doesn't really hold water. Sure there are some great albums that were produced to listened to as a progression, but there are also plenty of albums that are mostly just a collection of songs, some not worth listening to, while a couple are fantastic. Don't forget that bands like the Beatles, Stones, and other classic rock acts came out of an era where singles were the predominant form of distribution. We have simply returned to the era of the single. If shuffle players bother you, just don't put your favourite album on it, use it to play your jogging, aerobics, mundane tasks mix on and quit yer bitchin'. And before anyone wants to tell me how much I don't care about the music I will have you know that I have a degree in music composition, I fucking LOVE music, just not dogma.

In Paul Stamets' 'Mycelium Running' he talks about the fungal carpet of forests and the planet. The way he explains it, they sound like the WWW or our highway system.

Wow. This is cool as hell. About a year ago I was a big flag bearer for Stamets and his fungus books. I would go on and on to my friends about how amazing his books were. I think I just sounded like a nerd. Then I read Miyazaki's 'Nausicaa' manga for the first time, while I was reading the Stamets' books. I always wondered if Miyazaki was influenced by Stamets also. Dune is one of my most read books. I've probably reread it about six or seven times.

I've always kinda cringed whenever I had to say the word "steampunk". I don't have anything to offer yet as to an alternative, but I do have a question.

Would the design in David Lynch's 'Dune' be considered steampunk or simply a sort of techno-baroque?
