Kick 'N Go
May 15, 2008 4:27pm
My grandparents bought me a red Honda kickngo at a garage sale when I was a kid in the 80's.
It was so awesome I remember having lots of fun with it.
I found a picture of the vintage ones on this "do you remember" website. They do not seem to be that rare on ebay. I do remember that the one I had held up really well for years, no problems with the chain drive or hand brake. So, if anyone wants to save a whole grip of money, a vintage one might be a nice project to restore/paint with the kids.

Gotta get me one of those, time to dust off the old computers.
I recently found a hack that is sorta the opposite of new game on old computer, it's old games on new digital camera. http://shannonpatrick17.blogspot.com/2008/03/unlock-potential-of-your-canon-digital.html
I've been playing Reversi/Othello on my camera . I found out about this looking at Kite Aerial Photography on flickr.
CHDK is a firmware update that unlocks/ adds features your canon digital camera.
The level of control it gives you over your consumer camera is mind blowing, I paid less than $200 for my little credit card sized 7.1 megapixel canon sd1000 and not I'm shooting Raw Images and time lapse video. One of the awesome things I have not tried yet is the High-Speed Shutter & Flash-Sync feature that is totally off the hook.
I used a lot of links in this post because I know there are lots of readers like me, who love to find out about this stuff. Someone should blog about this on boing boing about this coolness or maybe @ bbgadgets?

Knowing the risk of fatality, to the finest nicety
April 13, 2008 9:54am
Ok I have briefly looked at the data from my state using conjecture and speculation have reached the following conclusion:
If you are a Pedestrian under the age of 5 and a Pedalcyclists while the Weather Condition is Rain and Dark, but Lighted and related factors being Inattentive (Talking, Eating, etc.) or Emotional (e.g., Depression, Angry, Disturbed), it seems not very likely that you would be in a fatal incident.
But that being said, it is best/safe to not temp fate at all by actually being outside, you just should stay indoors and play video games or read true crime books all day long.
Flickr adds video-sharing
April 9, 2008 1:08pm
First let me say I love flickr, but this video ability feels so half ass to me. I blogged my opinion here :
http://shannonpatrick17.blogspot.com/2008/04/flickr-adds-90-second-video-uploading.html
plus watch my awesome fridget photo slide show (flickr inside my fridge).
Bedtimechamp is right, vimeo.com is how video sharing should be done.
Woolie I like your videos.
Rossangeles your videos rocks hard, great music (careful with that beverage man), it's like a perfect 90 sec short film. If only all the flickr videos could be of the same quality as yours then it would be a perfect world.
Paula Wirth I agree totally, it does not seem like an improvement at all.
and lastly WTF is up with this:
3. Simple – not overproduced or slick
um ok plus no more slick hdr photos or photoshopping, get real...
LA Times on home of the French Dip sandwich
April 7, 2008 12:45pm
Wow, 100 years in the restaurant biz is pretty awesome! It's good to see places like this, I would love to visit it. While many people who comment on this blog have a my dad is better than yours kinda attitude, you have to admit that it is quite remarkable to have restaurants like this. I mean if a quiznos or arbys closes will anyone really lose any sleep?
Also, why is it so hard to pin down the elusive origins of sandwiches? Two words REUBEN SANDWICH.
My Grandmother used to tell me her sister invented the Reuben, the more I looked into the history of this sandwich the more controversy I found:
http://shannonpatrick17.blogspot.com/2008/03/history-of-reuben-sandwich.html
I also made a squidoo lens about Reubens
http://www.squidoo.com/reubensandwich
with recipes, video, and photos of some insane Reubens.
squidoo.com seems to be down right now(for me anyhow), but if you can get to the Reuben page check out all the photos. I really like this one:

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED DIRECTED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY KIM BARTLEY AND DONNACHA O'BRIAIN IRELAND, 2003 74 MINUTES
It is the kind of thing that you if you can read between the lines and know a little about past US involvement and CIA ops in other countries, it is obvious why certain events happened the way they did in Venezuela. I'm actually surprised we have not seen more efforts recently from the US in that country. any thoughts?

What if these "Silly" straws are a cry for help from within the walls of a Chinese prison where they are actually designed/manufactured.
When wal-mart stops buying this product someone might lose more than their job if you catch my drift. So is it the customer with penis on the brain we should feel anger at, or the dickless brains behind the system that allow wal-mart to profit from human right abuse?

scottfree: yeah you are so right, most guitar legends use cheap tricks like distortion and "pedal" as you say to make up for any real "talent". Because nowadays any kid can plug in a plastic guitar into their x-box and shred, finally we all realize that we have been hoodwinked into the rock mythos and we can stop believing this ridiculous untruth.
P.S. your many platinum albums and years of having a successful music career etc. give you the credibility to comment on such things as technique, and school all of us unknowing average readers into sharing your belief of what is actually cool and what guitar playing is all about... long live emo

Thats great, it's good to see people take back control of the things we buy and use them how we want.
I recently unlocked the potential of my $200 Canon sd1000 with chdk and now am able to do all kinds of cool things with it like shoot in RAW mode and control tons more parameters that your typical consumer digital camera is not able to. I can even run scripts, play games, read documents, calendar,depth-of-field calculator etc..

Also whats the big deal with the WorldWide Telescope, is it really that awesome, I think the very fact that they are kinda of alluding to that it will not be for the general public "free resource to the astronomy and education communities" seems kinda lame, or is it that it is some kind of resource hog that will not even be able to run on a current home pc.

Treehouse ruins: the archaeology of kids' ruins
February 20, 2008 1:31am
Thats so awesome. I lived just at the edge of city limits and we had a smattering of vacant lots, but my friends and I watched as what we considered OUR play areas became developed with houses. We thought like a war between us and the builders, because we would build forts and someone would buy the land and tear it down and put a house up. I was like 10/12 years old but we had the help of a eagle scout neighbor Doug who was 17 and we though he knew everthing. He showed us all kinds of ways to use materials and build structures. here is a list of our best forts:
One was built into the side of a ditch with a secret trap door entrance, we could park our bicycles on the roof which helped camouflage and hid it from the neighborhood eric cartman type kid.
Second one was totally underground we dug a 5'x 10 hole and roof was swiped plywood and 2x4's same type of secret door. we put a layer of dirt and then grass and branches on most of the roof. It took us one whole summer to dig it but then we decided it was lame and too dark inside and tried turning it into a pond by removing the roof running my garden hose for 24+ hours... I caught hell for that.
Third one: there was a house being built on a lot so they bulldozed some large elms and cottonwood trees and just left them in a huge pile in the wooded area behind the back yard. we built what we thought was close to a real house by scavenging enough plywood to make our first rectangular above ground structure. It had carpet and door and windows and even a small table with a lamp and huge radio shack police scanner which we would run multiple extension cords to the build sites power. We felt like it was our bandit hideout, thinking we would hear if the police were coming to kick us off the land and we could grab our lamp and radio and run like hell.this never happened.
we built many others like tipi and yurt type ones we could relocate but never as big or permanent.
our skills learning all this did pay off because around 13 t0 15yrs old my friends and I started building skate and bike ramps for ourselves then selling ones for profit.
It's funny to think all those hours we spent building things and all are gone now without a trace.

Wikifying video production

It seems like you guys are saying this sort of model will have to fail because it's a bad idea to collaborate in the first place. Wikipedia actually sounds like a horrible idea to most logical people, so how it that it has become so successful and contrary to naysayers and the fact that it still sounds like a bad idea when you explain how it works to people who have never heard of it, you can find quality, current, unbiased information.
I think that this sort collaboration and the fact that it will always be more easy to delete vandalism than create it is exactly what would get rid of all the "ball wrecking" videos.
-Michael Dean, you should open source your idea and think more about the implementation rather than trying to monetization something that you "invented", maybe the real value of your deal machine idea is that it could be used by people collaborating on a project that can later be monetized and the profits shared benefiting all the contributing people. Keep in mind that this kind of co-collaboration has already been going on for quite some time and people like to participate and will do so without the reward of compensation. I definitely see a huge amount of momentum that is picking up across the internet dealing with the idea of remixing and co-collaborating on music. It is not a far leap to think that video will be treated any different.

I really love this idea. I have been thinking about video and the language of video alot latly. I'm just starting to read Yochai Benkler's Wealth of Networks(http://www.benkler.org/wealth_of_networks/index.php/Main_Page).
I think that realizing possibilities of this sort of project will be quite amazing.
It reminds me of something I've seen a long time ago, the pbs history of the computer documentary "The Machine That Changed The World" one scene in particular where an they are talking about the future of computing and there is this child in school giving a presentation to his class and behind him is a chalkboard sized computer display showing video of an erupting volcano as he talks and he is holding a tablet pc, the teacher is mugging and all kids smiling as goes on talking. Keep in mind this documentary was well before the modern internet and computers and photography had hardly been integrated let alone video. The thing that struck me the most about that scene was not the huge display or tablet pc but the fact that once you have access to powerful tools like computers it really changes our lives and makes the world a larger, richer place to live and interact.
I really hope that people get excited about this. The internet and computers really are changing our lives, we should not be afraid to jump in and shape that change for the better. Websites like wikipedia, flickr, and youtube let us interact and expand our access to knowledge and everyday we get to look into lives and places we would normally not be able to see, hear and watch new ideas that before did not have the means to reach the public.
If I had to guess I would say that it is probably something like 90% of videos on youtube are just complete garbage and in my humble opinion just a waste of space. But that in that 10% there are thousand upon thousand of really interesting ones,
I have seen footage of things that I would have never even imagined even exsisted. Now if someone asked the same thing about wikipedia and how much was garbage, I don't know about anyone else but I think a number in the teens would be too high. There is so much great content and access to knowledge a lot of times if you are doing a search on a broad topic or even specific one wikipedia can be a better place to start than google.
So the question is if we mashup youtube and wikipedia what will the garbage to great content ratio be?
Painted gaming miniatures
December 28, 2007 12:58am
Pre-Painted NO THANK YOU! Painting them yourself was half the fun! I spent hours of my teenage life painting Ral Partha, Grenadier, Thunderbolt Mountain Miniatures, also scrounging up interesting looking rocks, wood, and foliage for dioramas.
Some old ones I painted back in the good ol days:
http://www.zooomr.com/photos/shannonpatrick17/4009229/
I remember vividly when I was and teen cajoled my parents to travel to 1990 Gen-Con and first laid eyes on the vast layouts of wargaming miniatures and intricate dioramas, hairs on the back of my neck zapped to attention. I mean Holy Jebus the craftsmanship and detail was unreal!
Pre-painted what is the world comming to?
Well here is a pre-rolled d20 to go with em if anyones wants... it's 3, it is always 3.

Magazine subscription cards are a pack of lies
December 1, 2007 2:20pm
Oh yeah I almost forgot but when I was looking into the ebay rip-offs I also came across this article:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/07/08/BUGF1DKKFM1.DTL
about how subscribers to wired magazine we getting delinquent account notices from North Shore Agency, a leading debt-collection firm just for not renewing their subscription.
So I thought the premise of Cory's link seemed odd at first glance, wired mag getting holier than thou to other magazines crappy subscription practices. But you have to give due credit to Chris Anderson's straight talk and I love how he said "To anticipate the obvious response".
I like how Mr. Anderson honestly talks about how they have used tricks in the past but they have a "new team in our circulation department".
Anyhow I did notice that a wired subscription is only $10 if you do it online thats like freakin 83% off the newsstand price! lol
But seriously, 2 whole years for $20 is better than most any magazine price I have seen.I think I'll go subscribe to wired right now.
Magazine subscription cards are a pack of lies
December 1, 2007 1:42pm
That was interesting to read.
Yeah we all hate those "blow in cards" and that is prob the worst way to subscribe.
My national Geographic sub is up and I just got an email if I click thru it is $34 but if you just go to the web site it is $15.
So awhile back I was looking for a cheaper way to subscribe and looked into eBay sellers while I was trying to verify if certain ones were legit I came across this story: http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2007/oct/19/former-bremerton-couple-named-in-magazine-scam/
Its about 34,000 customers losing $300,000 to $5.00 magazine subs on ebay from Cheapest-Magz scaming them.
another link:
Attorney General sues former Bremerton couple that sold magazines on eBay.
http://www.atg.wa.gov/pressrelease.aspx?id=18136
Hell I want a $5.00 subscription but sadly after looking into it, it turns out that most things that sound too good to be true really are. I am wary of ebay subscriptions because of the fact this type of scam plays on peoples greed and I bet ebay has not seen it's last cheap magazine scam. Also alot of people on the ebay forums are talking about how they think Cheapest-Magz hacked their ebay profile because they had over 9000 positive feedbacks, I myself do not think that is true but I have in the past seen ebayers use devious methods to gain lots of positive feedback quickly.

The book looks really cool, a great way to reminisce. It's kinda eye opening to see that some things have changed quite drastically e.g. technology, computers, and the internet. Yet some things have not changed at all and reek of the same stanky funk they have always had e.g. freedom of speech, copyright issues, government/corporate malevolence.
I have some hard to find back issues of 2600 from the late 90's early 2k era, if there is any interest I could be convinced to put them up on ebay so they could find a happy new home...
