Explaining food vs. nutrition: Michael Pollan talks at Google

May 7, 2008 10:18am

@zikzak

I love the way that a lot of that stuff tastes too, so I recreate it in my kitchen with real, whole, healthy ingredients, that don't contain emulsifiers, artificial colors, preservatives and texturing agents. You are the one polarizing this issue. Why can't your nachos be delicious AND healthy? They can be. Burgers, fried chicken, nachos, cakes and cookies all existed and were delicious before industrialization. Industrial processes aren't so much about making things delicious, they are more about making them cheap to produce so as to increase profits in a market that suffers (from a capitalist's perspective) from inelastic demand. The growth rate of the market is linked to population growth, which is only 1% per year, not enough for big business. The only way for capitalists to create growth of profits in this sector is to simultaneously reduce their costs while adding the perception of value to their product so as to increase it's retail price. It has nothing to do with deliciousness which, I agree, is subjective. It's about MONEY. The reason this is so important is because capitalism needs to let go of the food supply, otherwise we'll all be faced with disease and starvation in the very near future. Well, all except for the rich, as usual.

I couldn't disagree more. Everyone is affecte dby what he is talking about, especially those who don't give a shit about what they eat and consume mostly processed foods. They are the ones who have diabetes, obesity, and heart attacks and can't afford health care.

I'm reading The Omnivore's Dilemma right now, it's really a great book. I'm in the chapter that exposes the truth behind all the so-called organic food being pumped out now by the same industrial agribusiness that has been degrading the quality of food, depleting the soil and polluting the waters. It's quite revealing. Whole Foods and most all the organic brands being sold there and elsewhere are for the most part a scam and marketing ploy. What ashame the the organic movement has been subverted into a tagline.

I too prefer having my jus delivered in a bowl for dipping between bites, and then guzzling down what's left after the sandwich is gone. I couldnt imgine eating a sandwich that was pre-dipped. And some people order theirs triple dipped? That's retarded. Yet another justification for my mocking hatred of LA.

Censorware that blocks BB mentioned in Denver Post piece on filtered WiFi at DIA

TAKUAN this statement:

"just because it occasionally posts respected artworks that might include nudity."

is dishonest.

Posts about Uncle Dirty the 100 year bodybuilder in a thong who enjoys pasting penises onto magazine photos are VLGR. Posts about tele-dildonics are VRTLY SXL. There are tons of posts to this site that are about sexual things having NTHNG T D WTH RT. Not just the occasional peepees or teetees as depicted by a work of art. That statement makes it sound like they were banned for showing Michelangelo's David. And that, again, is DSHNST.

What is your problem anyway? You have a real baloneyshit attitude.

TSA endangers child's life by contaminating his feeding tube despite pleas

March 6, 2008 10:55am

Seriously though: is there a way the People of the U.S. can bring a class action lawsuit (or whatever the proper term is) agaisnt the TSA? I mean, they actually have killed people... Why hasn't this happened yet? If not "the People", can't all the families affected so far band together and sue them, asking for an immediate halt to the practices that led to these deaths and injuries until the verdict is in? Is there a lawyer in the house???

"I'm guessing it's lazy CYA"

Bravo! You win the big prize!

@ #18: I LOL'ed! Although I don't really get your point. Do you have one?

Xeni, and everyone else at BB: please, don't change a bit, even if DIA has blocked you. This is an adult site. That's why I like it. I'm an adult! Where else can I get such wide ranging ecclectic info from howto sneak shit past the TSA, all kinds of whistleblowing articles on egregious abuses of power by government and corporations, pop and geek culture, art, technology from the high to the low tech, and yes, (sometimes weird) erotica?

That's what it's all about. As intelligent, educated open minded adults, I don't see why these things should be segregated, and I enjoy the fact that you mix it all up. Just be honest about it. That's all I'm saying.

American culture has always been and will always be prudish and has always enjoyed scapegoating sexuality as the root of all of society's ills. That will probably never change. Even places like so-called liberal Denver will practice "won't somebody think of the children" CYA policies. This is non-news. Get over it.

Censorware that blocks BB mentioned in Denver Post piece on filtered WiFi at DIA

March 5, 2008 7:47pm

#9, did you read my post? I said I was not in favor of censorship. I also said that it is pure baloneyshit to qualify BB as only occasionally posting articles about respected artworks that might include nudity as the reason for which the fascists flagged the site. Again, I'm not in favor of ANY flagging, but that statement is totally false and hypocritical. Especially when it comes to Xeni posts, that very often are interested in such universally respected artistic memes as tele-dildonics, just to name one in particular. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

"just because it occasionally posts respected artworks that might include nudity."

Listen, I love you guys, been reading for years, but there are plenty of posts on this site that are gratuitously vulgar. I am by no means in favor of censorship, but come on. Be honest.

Boing Boing t-shirts by COOP!

December 9, 2007 9:40am

TERRIBLE!!!!

Coop may be a decent illustrator, but he's no T-shirt designer. Just imagine how disgustingly uncomfortable that shirt will be, especially in the summer, it will be a sheet of hot plastic on your belly.

Good t-shirt designs are minimal for this reason. Too much printed area is not only very uncomfortable because it heats up and doesnt breathe, it also breaks up more easily. After two washes (maybe Coop doesnt wash his clothes, since he's so rich now, he can just throw them out) it will be all cracked and will start to peel.

Back to the drawing board Coop!

Despite the weak dollar, many of my European friends have stopped coming here (they used to come in the 90s almost every year). The horror stories they've heard about the way they are treated upon entering and then departing our country at our airports has deterred them. Thats a shame, especially since we can use as much of their euros as we can get.

Dry erase cheese board

October 27, 2007 2:38pm

maybe this is martha's entry into the mollecular gastro scene. each marker is filled with its own delicious inks designed to compliment the cheeses, such as a port wine marker for stiltons, balsamic vinegar for the hard sheep and cow's milk cheeses such as reggiano or aged gouda, herb and olive oil inks for the goat cheeses, maybe some kind of smoked maple ink for cheddars, fruit and nut flavors like fig and hazlenut, and of course the various ersatz truffle flavored inks. The possibilities are endless. They would sell by assorted packs... Ok, by writing this post everyone sees this is MY idea, copyright for ever and ever.

Chinese luxury market -- all smoke and mirrors?

October 23, 2007 7:03am

I disagree that luxury is in essence all smoke and mirrors. Luxury can sometimes be all branding and design, but that is rare, and truly is for suckers. When you compare a real $1200 handbag to its $20 knockoff, the difference is evident. The idea is what is being knocked off, but you cant duplicate quality of materials and craftsmanship. Compare these two vehicles:

http://www.ceosmack.com/2007/08/28/bmw-ceo-fuming-over-chinese-knock-off-of-popular-x5-suv-pics/

From a distance and with a good photographer, the chinese version of the BMW x5 looks great. But when you see the car up close, as I have, the differences are appalling. No one would for an instant mistake the chinese version to be a luxury car. No smoke and mirrors there. A luxury item is a luxury item for a reason, QUALITY.

Weird canned foods

October 18, 2007 10:38am

I have some korean buddies, i go out drinking with them at some korean bars from time to time, and they have tricked me into eating these larvae. these ones came tossed in a red chili (what else) vinegary dressing. they were revoltingly disgusting. and i am NOT a squeamish eater. there is also a preparation of these larvae that is dry, like a nut. the larvae are black. they tricked me into eating those too. even more horrible, as the dried larva seems to suck all the moisture out of your mouth. MORE SOJU PLEASE!!!

Extreme cuisine: So what does it feel like to eat live octopus?

September 6, 2007 11:43am

so much guilt and self hate, so much denial of what we are. so much is forgotten about what it is to be alive, about what our food really is and where it comes from. this is the result of luxury. like an armchair warrior sending troops to their deaths without having ever been in a fight. you are disconnected.

MI-5 spied on George Orwell

September 4, 2007 9:31am

This was featured on NPR today. The most disappointing part was when it was revealed that Orwell has suspicions about other British private citizens whom he believed were dangerous Stalinists. He gave all of his information over to MI6, all while being spied on by MI5. How's about that for ironic?

(oh and Cory, the title of this post has a typo in it. You wrote m15, it's mi5)

Suicide at Burning Man

August 31, 2007 8:34am

I've been to Burning Man, I went three or four years ago. I had been reading about it for a while, first herad about it in 98, and was curious, and finally a friend dragged me there. It was fun, but definitely seemed like the original spirit was watered down if not lost entirely.

The last few days, a huge contingent of frat boys showed up, no doubt spurred on by legends of free loving hordes of naked ecstasy-addled young raver chicks to be had at will, to them just another huge rave and debaucherous party to attend without really being culturally part of. Frat boys dont care about that shit, they just want to get hammered and get with some drunk/stoned chicks. It was pretty disappointing to see them there, with their red cups, white hats on backwards and oakleys, like escapees of a girls gone wild video.

Burning Man would be awesome again if they just shut it down for a while and returned to their more humble and more low key origins after a few years, letting all the hype die down. Either that or they need to make participation more difficult, like some sort of mandatory interview, essay questions and art submissions along with the application in order to get a ticket. That would be the only way to do it in my opinion.
