500 Euro notes not welcome here

January 28, 2008 6:47am

In Brunei, there's a 10000 Brunei Dollar note. That's currently worth about USD 7000.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunei_dollar for a reference. I've actually seen one of these in person :)

Clever non-lethal mousetraps

October 24, 2007 7:04am

After trying to catch a mouse with no success for a while using some home made traps based on various designs from the web, we ended up getting the "corner cat" at a local hardware store. It caught two the first night, and in the last 4 weeks or so has caught a total of 7 mice (we thought we only had one!). We usually drop them off a few miles away to be sure. They really can't get out of this thing once they're in there, and it's reusable over and over again (plus you don't have to drink out of it afterwards).

Well worth the $10 or so...

How the AP busted Comcast for blocking BitTorrent

October 20, 2007 10:46am

Rogers, a cable provider here in Canada, has been blocking/throttling bittorrent here for some time now.

For a while it was possible to circumvent the throttling by using encryption, but then Rogers started throttling a variety of encrypted connections under some circumstances (!). https, ssh, etc. started become slow to the point of being completely crippled, while regular http traffic continued to work just fine.

I've recently switched from them to an independent DSL provider. Apart from dozens of confirmations from friends and some mentions on broadband and bittorrent forums online, there has been hardly any coverage of this.

Bill Watterson reviews the new Charles Schulz bio

October 15, 2007 2:05pm

Is it a coincidence that "Watterson" is spelled "Waterson" in the post, and "Schulz" is spelled "Shulz" in the first few sentences? I wasn't going to comment about the "t"s in "Watterson" but then I noticed the "Shulz" and that just freaked me out ;).

Maybe I'm just being overly pedantic today.
