It works very well, and I put those in most anything cold I drink, such as iced tea, lemonade, pop, etc.

I really really want one, if only it were more practical. I'm trying to figure out how to improve it and make one myself without investing a great deal of money, either up front or subscriptions. I'm not having any great ideas, unfortunately. Though, I suppose you could make a web applet that would take the path recommended by google maps or whatever, straighten it, and align it for printing for you.

Hmmm, maybe he's implying that they use children to monitor the traffic cameras. Cory, this leads me to believe that you are a numbers geek. I'm one too. I have an interest in any sort of more or less raw data that I can examine and play with. The CPI is a great example, but I have also been known to create rather complex spreadsheets that calculate fuel economy, average price per gallon of fuel for the month/year, price per mile for each tank, each month and each year, and other assorted (mostly useless) pieces of information from the gas receipts and odo readings of my car.

The puff of gas/smoke seemed awfully far forward and not in line with the muzzle, right above the sling swivel. The part is clearly metal, you can hear it when it hits the ground. It's longer than the wood handguard/heat shield that covers the top of the gas tube/barrel.

Now that you've pointed it out, I do agree with your assessment of the likelihood of a gas tube failure. I'll defer to you, having watched it a couple more times now. (I must have watched that video 25 times today.)

That piece of metal came from a few inches back of the muzzle. Watching the clip a couple times, it looks like the gas tube ruptured when he fired his final round. That's the only thing on top of an AK that would be that long and made of metal. When he's walking back towards the rest of the people, it appears that his AK is missing the gasport and tube assembly, but it's very hard to tell.

What I find most interesting is that the comments on this post are all so human. In total, they all convey emotion and thought, despite the fact that nearly all are formulaic and/or non sequitors. And yet, when you encounter bots whose text answers are equally formulaic and random, what comes across is the coldness of their code.

I think Diamond puts emphasis on geographic/environmental factors because they are not necessarily always identified or given sufficient weight (in his opinion) when discussing events such as the Spanish invasion of Central America. He also, however, makes a point of saying that it's how societies, cultures and states react to the environment that can make the crucial difference. The Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch may have had different political issues or political views than the English, Italians and Germans. The latter three may have been more inwardly focused, or engaged in regional wars that prohibited spending their resources on colonization.

What I have taken away from Jared Diamond's books is that environment and geography plays an important role in how a civilization develops and the choices available to it. However, it is only one (oft overlooked) factor among many that ultimately determine success. Jared Diamond also set out to help dispel the notion that the reason the Spanish and other colonizing powers succeeded in colonizing was that they were inherently better people or societies.

The fact that boundaries exist does not make them deterministic. The United States has several boundaries that prevent us from seriously considering or reaching certain goals. Because of our choice of a free market system and a democracy, we cannot suddenly choose to go without fossil fuels, for instance. Our politicians don't have the power, and the market would impose too high a cost to realistically achieve that goal right now. Similarly, a society that existed on the either of the poles would have a rather difficult time getting 100% of their power from solar panels, as it's dark 6 months of the year.

Boundaries and limits do not define a course of action unless they limit the choices to one. What Jared Diamond has pointed out is that if you attempt to go past certain bounds, you may threaten a society that doesn't acknowledge that there is a boundary, and therefore refuses to change behaviors. It doesn't limit free will; you can do whatever you want, the results may not be what you expect. Another (silly) example: You could, theoretically, walk around slapping people across the face for no particular reason. If you do it infrequently, there might not be severe consequences, just some very confused and upset people. If continue to do it, and increase in frequency, you may find yourself confronted by other people, engaged in a fight, or taken to court. Those are consequences for breaking a social norm or boundary. That boundary didn't constrain or prevent that behavior, but a refusal to acknowledge it or change behaviors may bring undesirable (and possibly, unforseen) consequences.

For all of those saying that books aren't great insulation, we understand. They aren't recommending that you rip out the drywall and install shelves between the studs so that your books take the place of insulation. They're saying that adding a layer of books adds to the insulating properties. So, if you go gung-ho and install great insulation, you can save even *more* energy by also putting a bookshelf along that wall.

Another benefit to books lining walls: It cuts down on echoes and reverb in the room. In my personal experience, adding a couple bookshelves full of books to a room helps soften the noise and eliminates echoes and reverb that can make a room rather unpleasant.

BTW, I wouldn't try pushing the depth ratings on camera housings. Leaks aren't the only concern. That housing looks like it fits the camera fairly snuggly, so once you exceed the rated depth, the housing may flex in a way that presses buttons, or presses on the screen, etc. If you go too deep, depending on where the failure point ends up, instead of leaking, it may simply implode. That is not a pleasant or particularly safe experience.

Just remember, every 33 feet down, the pressure increases by another atmosphere.

I have a drawstring sports bag that I got as a freebie from Apple when they were on campus. The thing can be worn as a backpack, slung over a shoulder, or carried as a normal bag. It currently resides in the side pocket of my backpack, though I can't say I've used it for much other than the padding of fragile objects.

In some cases, those cardboard rings aren't reusable. I've seen some that have little lines of hot glue that's activated by the hot drink inside the cup, gluing the ring to the cup. That makes it impossible to get the ring off the cup in one piece. Most of the rings I've seen also have a little line that says "Intended for single use only. Do not reuse."

Heh. I was dragged to Starbucks the other day where I ordered a large tea. They gave me my tea, double cupped with one of those cardboard rings as well. I found it immensely amusing to read on the ring where it said "Thank you for choosing to use an insulating ring. Using this ring consumes 65% less material than using a second cup."

That being said, there's a coffee shop near me that has absolutely no issues filling whatever mug you bring in with coffee. It doesn't have to be one of their branded cups, and it certainly cuts down on consumer waste.

The bag I have is an the ancestor of the Eddie Bauer Expedition Backpack Duffel. It's got an elastic strap that allows the bag to be compressed further, and a self-sealing rubber grommet that allows cables out of the pack. Oh, and it looks better too.

I also live near Ann Arbor. One of the factors in that situation may be the University of Michigan. In my experience in a college town, the rent is driven up by the number of students that try to occupy the town 9 months of the year, forcing lower income people to the fringes. For most students at large Universities, there simply isn't parking available for the majority of students to commute in to school; they absolutely have to be within public transportation or walking distance. I think in that respect, maybe Universities are a bit ahead of the times in respect to the gentrification of urban areas.

Since there seem to be a fair number of lawsuits based on this exact technicality, is there a way that this issue can be forced? Can we take Microsoft's statement before a court that it sells software and use it to render all their EULAs null and void?

I agree with Steven E. McDonald. They've been varying the number of items in each iteration, but that number has been steadily decreasing. I imagine a BOC will show up after the entire country has had a chance to catch on to this woot-off, and they sell out of these things entirely.

I had a Creative soundcard that came in my Dell a few years back. In the course of my rolling upgrades, I've since upgraded the motherboard, power supply and graphics card, which meant I had to put the whole thing in another case. What I didn't realize at first was that the front panel pinout on the Creative card wasn't labeled, and the connector from the Dell case was non-standard. I could find no clear pinout description on their site, and the only solution I managed to find was one that required me to solder leads directly to the board, something I wasn't willing to do. Of course, Creative was more than willing to sell me a front panel that would take up one of my drive bays for a bit over $100.

To me, keeping pinouts "secret" and proprietary for something as common as front panel headphone and microphone ports is along the same lines as delibrately leaving out features you would expect to remain functional through a relatively normal upgrade. The idea in either case seems to be to force the user to buy another Creative product. I love their portable music players, but I am not currently running, nor will I run, any Creative cards in my machine until they change their practices. I've found other manufacturers that provide more consistent customer service and support.

I read a while back that organized crime and the like are moving away from $100 dollar bills and more towards Euros and Pounds to make large, cash only transactions, as you can cram more buying power into a smaller physical space, as both the Euro and the Pound have higher denomination bills, and higher per-unit value.

And that, my friends is just one more reason for me to carry a knife with a pocket clip. Sure, the net would slow me down, but I wouldn't be as helpless as some of those guys...

I would say that I want to get one just to get shot with a net, but as a law-abiding citizen in the US, I'm sure I'll be hit with one in a couple years anyway.

I don't believe that the data from SAE would allow anybody to copy products or technology directly, without significant engineering work themselves. From the SAE articles that I've read, most of them seem to be about how a person/company solved a particular technical problem in a unique way. It either provides a basic understanding of the mechanism, and what makes it special, or it provides an explanation of the new problem solving technique used. One of the purposes of groups and publications like SAE is to allow professionals in the same field to compare notes so that everyone can solve problems more efficiently with more elegant solutions and generally advance the state of the art. It's more like a bunch of college students working on homework problems together, as opposed to the solutions manual. Everyone still has to do their own work, but tips and tricks may be traded among students.

I never, ever got a good ending in a CYOA book. I always died, no matter what I tried to do. I'd get frustrated and read another book, or try to write my own story. Once, just once, I'd like to be able to read a CYOA and "win." Hmm... I think I just figured out what to do with my afternoon...

I think if I bought one of these, I'd sit down with a pair of thermometers, a notebook, this mug, a plain ceramic mug, and a stopwatch. I'd want to see if this coating affected the rate at which the drink loses heat (most likely not) and at what temperature the change takes place. Then I could use the mug to tell me when I should start chugging the tea so I can make a fresh mug.

If you're hiking any distance, get decent boots, and wear two sets of socks. The inner socks can be relatively thin, and should wick sweat away from your skin to prevent blisters, while the outer socks should be thicker and provide more cushion. You should have at least one set of spares for each type of sock, and you should change them every day, or as soon as your feet get damp.

I would also recommend two one-quart bottles with a wide mouth (think nalgene), and a hand pump water purifier. That way, the only water that ever touches those bottles has already been filtered. Incidentally, they also make a french press that works inside a nalgene (You posted it on BBG if I remember correctly).

Stuff a couple extra garbage bags in your pack as well. They can be used for any number of different things, and they don't weigh much.

Funny that you should mention the Black & Decker tools. Among electric-powered RC airplane builders and pilots, it's becoming an increasingly popular practice to buy spare battery B&D lithium packs, open them and divide the cells into packs that are sized for their particular requirements. Of course, the people doing this have a much greater knowledge of battery chemistries and methods than your average consumer. They also take more safety precautions; nearly every flier in the club I'm in that uses lithium batteries charges them in specially modified air-tight ammo cans to contain them should they "catastrophically fail."

I agree with Will. A good portion of the books that I've picked up to read in the past two or three years come from the used book rack at my local library. At a dollar for hardcovers and 50 cents for paperbacks, the price is hard to beat. Every time I'm at the library, I go through each rack, looking for something that'll catch my eye. That's how I picked out two first edition Ian Flemming James Bond books, and discovered a love for Hemingway. Even if I don't like the book, I know my money went to the library, and I can drop the book off in their used book bin. Part of what makes finding books so difficult for me is that I don't want to put a lot of time into a bad book, and it can be hard to get recommendations you trust. That being said, there's always the classics.

Lockpicks are legal to own in a some places, as they do have a legitimate use: opening locks to which you have lost the key. It's all about context. If someone is found trespassing with a skimask, and a set of lockpicks, they may be charged for carrying burglary tools. The same would be true if they were carrying a crowbar. In the course of banning offensive weapons, you are also likely to ban items used in martial arts.

Incidentally, I'd be willing to bet that if these were marketed and sold as self defense keychains with images of a lone woman in a parking lot at night, the public reaction would be much different. There are much more insidious defense tools sold that way. One example is a self defense key chain that's a bar with one sharpened end and two spikes that are designed to come out between the fingers. I have yet to see an outcry over those, despite the fact that the last place I saw them was the 99 cent bin at my local ACO.

I think as a society, we need to calm down. Banning all weapons is ultimately about as sensible as tilting at windmills. In high security prisons where all objects accessible to the inmates are vetted by officials and every person is under near-constant scrutiny, and every one is subject to regular searches, lethal weapons routinely appear and are used. An attempt to do something similar in the real world is laughable.

I almost feel like my watch is a part of me when I wear it. As for wearing one in the woods, you can use an analog watch as a compass rather easily, a fact that I enjoy waaaaay more than I should.

Joel, a number of military surplus catalogs sell flexible solar panels that are weatherproofed for use while camping. You're most likely going to need to figure out how much power all of your desired gadgets are going to draw and size your panel(s) accordingly. I'd also recommend taking along plastic dry-bags for your equipment (above and beyond a ziplock) so that you can be absolutely sure you're not going to fry your stuff. Depending on how much the rest of your gear weighs, you could take a long a sealed cell boat or car battery, and charge it with panels and tap it for juice.

If you really want something like this, CVS offers(ed?) a "disposable" digital video camera for around $30. The theory was you'd take your 20 minutes of video, drop the camera off, and they'd burn it onto a DVD for $50. Instead, if you soldered in a USB cable and downloaded a driver, you could record multiple videos on the camera, and download them to your computer. It's simple to do, and made a good afternoon project. The next project for this camera is going to be an underwater housing...

What they were trying to say was that all of the cities that have been built and that have grown in the southwest have been built using faulty assumptions. The rainfall and water supply that they assumed would always be available is actually something of a fluke, at least compared to the nearly 3000 years of data they've been able to find using tree rings.

Jared Diamond actually touched on this problem in his book "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed." While this is a huge ecological issue, it's also a huge issue economically. Right now, the populations there are living beyond what the environment can support. As time progresses, the amount of available water is only projected to decrease. Then three things are going to happen, either individually, or together: People will move away, more resources will be spent on trying to obtain more water, or water conservation will accelerate. Option two can have severe consequences for other areas as well. For instance, the Great Lakes States, as well as the Canadian Provinces, have formed a group to protect the Great Lakes. There has been at least one proposal to ship water to the southeast. This group of governments blocked it, to try and protect the Great Lakes Resource (including the cultural and environmental resources beyond water). Regardless, the Great Lakes are down several feet from normal, in part from the dredging of the Saint Lawrence Seaway to provide a channel for international shipping.

It's very tempting to say that this is a regional problem, but we're all connected these days, either geographically, or politically.

I'll second Grey's statement. I live near Dearborn, which has one of the largest populations of Muslims and people of Middle Eastern origins outside of the Middle East. The perspective I've gained by living with and interacting with people with all sorts of different religious and cultural backgrounds has been incredibly valuable.

I find this bit of news particularly interesting. After the release of Vista, a number of commentators said that the relative failure of Vista was due to Microsoft stretching itself much too thin, largely by trying to overtake Google in the online search and advertising business. If this bid succeeds, will that mean that Microsoft will once again be able to concentrate on developing OSs, or will they be spread even more?

You can actually heat water with a blender. It's a pretty basic thermodynamics problem. What you need is a perfectly insulated blender cavity. Then, all the work done by the blender blades will go towards heating the water. Unfortunately, you don't have a whole lot of power going through those blades, nor do you have a perfectly insulated blender, so it'll take a long time.

There was one of these, but not sponsored by Yamaha, at the Michigan Sportsman Show last year. They used it for fly fishing demonstrations and the like.

The main reason is that there is a contract that promises a certain rate, so much data per second. In our current marketplace, there are very few things that are sold to us that follow a similiar pricing scheme, and so it is hard for me to come up with a perfect example, so bear with me on this one.

Suppose you bought a car, and the car company promised you 300 horsepower (Which is a rate, energy per second.)Now, you'd expect to be able to drive the car however you'd like. Suppose you were into racing, and went to a drag strip, and used the full capacity of the engine, squeezing every last drop of that 300 horsepower out of the engine. Now, suppose you were in the middle of the race, and all of the sudden, your engine dropped to idle. You can't figure out why, so you leave the track, and limp back home. The next day, you call up the car company, and ask them what's going on, and they say "Well, you were using all 300 horsepower too frequently. So, we just made you stop." "Wait," you say, "You promised me 300 horsepower. I want to use it." "Oh, we're sorry sir, but you've used 300 horsepower too much. We just can't let you continue."

That is what's going on here. Customers (including yourself, I presume) were promised a rate. Some people want to use all of what they paid for, all the time, others just like to know that power is there when they need it. However, Comcast isn't living up to their end of the bargain. In fact, they're not just falling short, they are actively trying to prevent people from using what they paid for. That is what people, including myself, have an issue with.
