Ah - that's good, bring the wife/girlfriend along for some good time robbery. Hopefully they can't afford condoms and next time they can get some kids involved!
Old comic book depicts US suicide bomber as hero
April 14, 2008 4:46pm
You don't have to go back that far to find honored suicide bombers - what about Bruce Willis in Armageddon or that one guy in Terminator 2.
Then again, fictionalized suicide bombings against major threats like the rise of machines, a giant asteroid hurling towards earth, or even the opposing military force in a war somehow don't seem as bad to me as the real-life suicide bombings that target civilians.
Now that would be a different story if it showed a U.S. soldier suicide bombing a Russian market.
Diary of Maasai Warrior in London: "The marathon is easy. There are no lions"

P.S. I also noticed the naivety but immediately figured it sounded that way due to the translation.
Diary of Maasai Warrior in London: "The marathon is easy. There are no lions"
April 14, 2008 4:40pm
I always imagine how a person from the far past would describe today. Since we don't have time machines, I guess this is as close as it gets. Accurate or not, it was an entertaining read.
I don't get why some people thought it was mildly racist. I guess pointing out differences in races or cultures now is considered racism? That's sad.

Anybody else watch webdrifter? They visited a sex-dungeon-doctor guy once and put the host in one of these. Apparently they are used for some kind of sexual deviance.
McCain and conspiracy theorists agree that Washington is Satanic
April 11, 2008 2:15pm
The pentagram wasn't used by satanist until way after those streets were designed and built.
The pentagram here most likely is a reference to freemasons' five points of brotherhood.
New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"
April 11, 2008 1:57pm
I was a bit angry at this article. NOT because the lady let her kid navigate the streets alone - that was pretty cool I think.
The reason I was perturbed was because she didn't want to give her cell phone to the kid. Why? She was afraid of losing it.
Not afraid of losing the kid - afraid of losing her phone.
Weird.
Charlie Manson uses Creative Commons licenses
April 4, 2008 2:34pm
I'm listening to the album right now.
It's ... interesting. I don't know if I'd call it "good," but I would like to point out that many awesome musicians are completely batshit crazy.
Sunspots don't cause global warming, people do
April 4, 2008 2:21pm
Wow - a study on global warming that takes in the changes of an ENTIRE 20 year period! I guess that's conclusive...
What about the period between 1600-1700 when sunspots nearly DISAPPEARED and there was a corresponding "mini ice age?"
No matter, I guess a 20 year study on something that takes decades and decades to make small changes is enough. Let's keep buying hybrids.
Student arrested for shock prank camera
April 3, 2008 1:05pm
@TRR: Nobody erred in posting instructions - even boingboing had a warning. The kid erred in taking the joke too far or not using enough caution with the prank. He can blame nobody but himself.

One million dollar bond set this week for man who conned $20 from store in 1990
March 27, 2008 11:28pm
Yea, okay I looked it up. This is according to Ohio's bar association: "Some of the common time limits for starting civil cases are: 21 years to recover real estate; 15 years to sue on written contracts; six years to sue on oral contracts; two years for actions for personal injuries or property damage; and one year for libel, slander, malicious prosecution, false imprisonment, and professional malpractice. Most other types of lawsuits are subject to a four-year limitation." Ohio State Bar Association: The Law and You."
Pretty sure there is no legal leg to stand on here.
One million dollar bond set this week for man who conned $20 from store in 1990
March 27, 2008 11:26pm
This sounds fishy. Surely there is a statute of limitations on petty theft. Also, you would have a hard time proving this happened 18 years ago and that the man even knew the roll of dimes was filled with pennies (he could have just as easily been duped).
Also, it is the cashier's responsibility to make sure the customer has paid what they owe to take the merchandise. Although the guy may have been crooked, it's technically the cashier's fault for not verifying that they were given the correct amount.
Transgender man is pregnant

"I find it interesting that you refer to the Weekly World News as, 'The paper.' The paper contains facts."
"This paper contains facts. And this paper has the eighth highest circulation in the whole wide world. Right? Plenty of facts. 'Pregnant man gives birth.' That's a fact. "

Aww I missed it! Around here $135k would buy you a cardboard box under a bridge.
Although, now that I think about it I'd take the cardboard box over Tennessee.

Australia may give go-ahead for Creative Commons on public data
February 15, 2008 1:51am
Okay this is completely random - but I noticed an optical illusion with the image of Australia.
Look anywhere on your screen but directly on the image and scroll up and down - the image appears to pulsate, getting smaller and bigger each time.
Anyone else see it?

Mac trojan in the wild

If anyone is dumb enough to install a codec so they can "view porn" then they deserve their fate.
Trojans are easy to create, easy to distribute, and equally easy to avoid.

Obama promises Net Neutrality law
October 30, 2007 1:43pm
KIPESQUIRE is correct, a president can't promise that he will deliver a law.
A law must first got through congress which, like a bong, has two chambers.
But the blurb from the article states correctly that he is not promising a law as the title suggests, but he is promising affix his signature to some [proposed] rules.
A president can sponsor, lobby, encourage, threaten, sleep with, etc. to get a law passed, but he can't arbitrarily pass one by himself.

Best Buy won't refund "hard drive" that turned out to be a box of bathroom tiles
October 29, 2007 12:35pm
This happened to me at best buy before. I was about 16 and had saved up to buy an awesome sound card. I went to Best Buy and bought it, brought it home only to find some other weird PCI card in the box.
I think it was a USB card, but at that time USB wasn't around much yet so I didn't know what it was.
I drove all the way back to best buy (45 minute drive) and showed them. They accused me of switching the cards and would not exchange, give me store credit, or give me my money back. I was just some kid, I had no recourse.
I drove back home, got my dad, and made my third trip to Best Buy that day. He is a lawyer so he said some legaleeze stuff to them and they eventually relented and let me exchange the card. They never stopped to think that if I had stolen the card, why was so eager to exchange the thing they gave me for the card I wanted. Wouldn't I have taken cash back and run if I was a thief?
Anyway - Even before that I thought Best Buy sucked. I've never found it to be "the best buy" in town, so I rarely step foot in there (that and their crazy receipt checking policies).
Childhood obesity in The Week

We just need to get back to a time when everyone found people more attractive the bigger they are.
Problem solved.
Taser death at Vancouver Airport
October 26, 2007 3:06pm
This story is horrible. I can barely stand to look at the guy's face and then read about what happened.
That being said, I was away while they changed all the rules and when I came home my family was supposed to be there waiting. I got off the plane and sat down for about 10 minutes before realizing I was in a "secure area" and found my family outside.
It can be confusing if you don't know what is going on. What I don't understand is why the guy didn't walk around a bit or try to figure out what was going on.

How the AP busted Comcast for blocking BitTorrent
October 21, 2007 12:14am
I don't get why this is a story.
ZOMG GUESS HOW THEY FOUND OUT COMCAST WAS BLOCKING TORRENTS?!!?!11!?!! They tried to download one and IT DIDN'T WORK!
Doesn't seem very scientific. It's a simple observation.
Also, I have been on comcast for YEARS and never had a problem downloading torrents. So by my simple, non scientific observation , I could make the opposite absolute claim - "Comcast does not block torrent traffic!".
Death Cab for Cutie guitarist's album disappears down the DHS memory-hole

It is worth noting that by definition one of the functions of a country is to "promote the arts."
This is a good example of not doing that.

Twirly-faced suspected pedophile arrested

Microsoft's "mind reading" patent
October 15, 2007 9:46am
Interesting. After Microsoft has proven they don't have an interface design bone in their body, they are going the scientific route and trying to fine tune their products with trial and error.
I give them props for trying. It would be interesting to see comparisons made between various operating systems.
I wonder why they can't just ask users: "How hard was it to perform this task?"

Amazon's MP3 store rips off your fair use rights
October 8, 2007 9:06pm
I wouldn't call it a failure. We can't complain so long as we're making progress. Us consumers want more and more all the time, and we're actually winning this one - Amazon gets props, even if its not perfect.
Neuroscience and God
October 8, 2007 8:29pm
The Athiest: This is proof that God does not exist. Like we've been saying all along, there is a natural explanation for everything. It's all in your head.
The Christian: This proves God's existence. Since religious feelings do not have any apparent evolutionary advantage, the only explanation is that God has built in a way to communicate with his people.
The Agnostic: ...
Video of Wal-Mart's spreading across USA like germ culture
October 4, 2007 11:57am
Racist people could look at how blacks populated different parts of the US over time and compare it to a virus. The American Indians could make the relation to how whites spread like a virus.
We could look at how the building of hospitals and schools has spread like a virus. We could look at the entire human population as just a big virus to the earth. Starting in Africa and spreading from there.
Just because something starts small and gets big, doesn't mean its good or bad.
Wal*Mart has spread because people shop there. If they didn't, they wouldn't have enough money to continue building stores. So maybe the contention is not with Wal*Mart, but with the people that continue to shop there. A corporation is nothing without its customers.
