One interesting point overlooked: This is an analogue computer, today these problems are solved by digital computers.

Paper airplane to be launched from International Space Station

January 18, 2008 6:46am

@#1: Aerodynamic heating may be caused by many different aerodynamic mechanisms. In this case I think they need to worry most about shock wave boundary layer interactions. That is, the shock waves from the body interacting with other parts of the 'paper' plane. Mach 7 flow produces Mach waves at an angle of 8.213 degrees. That is small, obviously, so the aerodynamic heating from this phenomena if they can't avoid it will be the greatest. Your right in the fact that compressibility plays a role in the compressible turbulent boundary layer. This creates a recovery factor which will make the temperature on the surface of the vehicle slightly less than the stagnation temperature.

To me this whole project seems to be more of a materials and flight design experiment. This is not a fundamental study of fluid dynamics.

@#9: Nothing to do with NASA? Aren't most of the modules of the ISS financially supported by the US and deployed by the space shuttle? I may be wrong.

Judge rules defendant can't be forced to divulge PGP passphrase

January 7, 2008 1:43pm

This is probably one of the most important court decisions that I have heard in a long time. It is also the right decision. Thank you Boing Boing for reporting this. For those who do not know what PGP is they should consult the Wikipedia article on the subject. There is also a very interesting history in the development of PGP regarding the government.

Federal shredding budget soars

December 15, 2007 9:46am

It is interesting that there is a plateau in the graph. Also, it appears that the 2007 spending will not exceed last years. So perhaps, the first derivative of the spending is now negative. (Which I am not sure it is because 2007 is not over). Also, the y-axis of the graph presented has no numerical values. That is very deceptive. I'm sure that even if you agree or disagree with the results, that the lack of numerical values on the axis of the graph may be misleading.

Finally, why is there such a short time history presented? Where is the data from the 80's and 90's? Maybe that spending was higher also with the Cold war?

I knew one day the alien space spider species would attack our methods of space junk spreading.

Machine Girl trailer: 1 girl, 1 arm, 1 gun, pure win.

I feel dumber after watching that. I actually feel dumber after watching most movie trailers. If this keeps up, soon my intelligent quotient will be pretty close to 0.

Climate change denialists winning the race for "Best Science Blog"

November 8, 2007 7:30am

Even though the blog in question might be bunk (I don't know I don't have time to read it), there are some serious scientists who question the reasons for global warming. Eg: is it caused by humans or is it naturally occurring. It is important to examine both sides of the issue, which, I'm sure not everyone has. Examining the other sides of the issue in question with an open mind is an important part of forming your opinions on these important issues. Note however, that I am not a climate scientist or even a Geophysicist. So, what do I know? Please excuse my ignorance on the subject.

Cosmetic surgeon will point your ears?

October 26, 2007 8:49am

I agree with point number 2. He is a medical quack doctor, not an acoustician. Also, what makes 8000 Hz so special, when the human range of hearing is 20 to 20,000 Hz?

Neuroscience of Alice in Wonderland

October 15, 2007 9:20am

In the book, 'The Annotated Alice,' very similar comments are described about the Mad Hatter. This was published many years ago before this article. It was edited by Marten Gardner. If you are a fan, this is a must read version.

SimCity adds global warming to the mix

October 11, 2007 5:45am

All the SimCity games incorporated pollution effects from the buildings and power plants. In each case pollution effected property value etc. In this case they are only making the extension to global warming. All the other features of the game were there before.

Richard "Ultima" Garriott owns a Sputnik

October 4, 2007 5:34am

Tabula Rasa is delayed by two weeks, and now I see the head guy is goofing off with his space hobbies. What does that say to all the pre-order customers? Perhaps, this is the real reason the game is delayed. I will say that pretty much all MMO's are delayed, but those are from technicalities, not the playboy goofing off.

SMS smoke signals

October 3, 2007 12:48pm

"In other words, onlookers can text messages which are then displayed using light projected into plumes of smoke."

I think that this sentence from the article pretty much sums up what they are doing, unlike the one quoted in the article. At first when I read it I had thought that they were actually creating the smoke in the forms of words from text messages, instead simple smoke screens are created and a projector sends light through it. That doesn't seem to be as creative as the paragraph makes it out to be.
