Paleo-laptop reviewed, 1983

I was asked to evaluate the first Compaq luggable in 1983. (Technogeek is right on the money. It was "portable" only by Arnold Schwarznegger. The rest of us sweated the whole time we were lugging it.) I loved it, but I knew it wouldn't work for most of the people in the company.
This really is a blast from the past.

Archivists to Oregon: your laws aren't copyrighted, so there!
May 3, 2008 5:14pm
As an Oregonian, I wish I could say I'm shocked, shocked! I can't.
I've been fairly active in local and state politics and civics since I moved out here. Recently I testified before the legislature, as part of major civic organization. We wanted to get a copy of the audio for the the club's files, a digital record. It turns out that, on instructions from the Legislature, the only audio format available was cassette tape.
The attempt to copyright any public institution's laws is just nuts. The laws do not belong to the legislature, nor to the executive or judicial branches. They belong to the people of the state.

Cory,
I have loved everything of your's that I've read.
That said, there is one thing in which I ask you to indulge me. The following parenthetical phrase, from the first paragraph of the blog section contains a common grammatical error. Right at the beginning.
Here's the sentence:
(there's also forthcoming editions in the UK, Greece, Russia, France and Norway, with others pending)
Help this old geezer geek to rest easy in a grammatical way. Please fix it?

SF magazines' circulation numbers in sad decline
October 23, 2007 11:35am
I am really impressed that so many responders indicate that electronic magazines are mostly more convenient these days than paper.
Unfortunately, Analog - and may other magazines - charge the same for the electronic publication as they do the paper. I really want all the authors, editors and publishers to make a decent amount. But, I wonder if any of them have ever sat down and done the math to determine what the lowest possible price they would have to charge for an electronic subscription. I don't have the answer, but I think the results of such a calculation may prove to be much lower than they charge now.
They can always print on demand for a significant extra charge.
Oh, and a really cheap ($100 or less) ereader would help this cause immensely.

It's going to be interesting to see what is filmed when the first jackass uses this stupid device to take pictures of the police making an arrest. How many times have we heard stories of kids and adults being shot because they were using a realistic looking fake gun. It's hard to blame the cops when they believe a person is about to shoot them.
Yes, I know some police forces can be trigger happy, but this is one instance where I generally think they're correct.
Idiotic device.
