AB3A - I forgot to mention, great story!

AB3A - Me, too. I passed the 20 WPM test also. They offered it to me when I went for my General license, and I thought, well, it's paid for, I should at least try it. My copy was pathetic, but I did pass it because I was just able too suss out the multiple choice answers. I felt so guilty that I resolved myself to become proficient at 20 WPM and eventually did. I could pass a real 20 WPM test now, if I had to. But, not then...I had no business passing that test, at the time.

@11 - I did not know that. Good thing I never had to send it.

However, wiki seems to disagree with you - "Here is an example of an SOS signal the portions in brackets are an explanation only.

Ahh - it is an HD tuner, and after a little research I see that by now ALL tuners SHOULD be HD...

Please don't merely say "TV tuner" anymore. Maybe in a year or two that will be OK, but for now, that is not enough information. HD or SD?

Can anyone find a reference to a videophone system earlier than 1927's Metropolis by Fritz Lang? (In retrospect, I imagine that the sci-fi fans here will bury me in citations...)

Jesus Made Me Puke: Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right

May 28, 2008 12:53pm

Eli Sunday: Daniel, I'm asking if you'd like to have business with the Church of the Third Revelation in developing this lease on young Bandy's thousand acre tract. I'm offering you to drill on one of the great undeveloped fields of Little Boston!
Plainview: I'd be happy to work with you.
Eli Sunday: You would? Yes, yes, of course. Wonderful.
Plainview: But there is one condition for this work.
Eli Sunday: Alright.
Plainview: I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet... I'd like you to tell me that you are, and have been, a false prophet... and that God is a superstition.
Eli Sunday: ...but that's a lie... it's a lie, I cannot say it.
[long pause]
Eli Sunday: When can we begin to drill?
Plainview: Right away.
Eli Sunday: How long will it take to bring in the well?
Plainview: Should be very quick.
Eli Sunday: I would like a one hundred thousand dollar signing bonus plus the five that is owed with interest.
Plainview: That's only fair.
Eli Sunday: I am a false prophet and God is a superstition. If that's what you believe, then I will say it.
Plainview: Say it like you mean it.
Eli Sunday: Daniel...
Plainview: Say it like it's your sermon.
Eli Sunday: This is foolish.
[long pause]
Eli Sunday: I am a false prophet! God is a superstition! I am a false prophet! God is a superstition! I am a false prophet! God is a superstition!
[pause]
Eli Sunday: Is that fine?

BBQ sauce: "authentic food court flavor"

May 28, 2008 12:47pm

Reminds me of Stubbs BBQ sauce. ( http://www.stubbsbbq.com/ ) But, they claim real authenticity, not a snarky food court reference.

It looks like a delicious home recipe from a kindly old African American Gentleman. But the first (or second) ingredient is high fructose corn syrup. Bleah! When did he start putting that in the stuff he feeds his kids!

I've been anticipating Spore for so long that I can't imagine not buying it, no matter what sh^t-eating DRM is attached, but I did go ahead and cancel my Amazon pre-order. Amazon actually required me to give a reason before I could cancel, so I did, and also included this link: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1699

Maybe enough canceled pre-orders will make a difference...yeah, right...

The little ad for the television school (from 1932!) on the last page of the electronics industry article intrigued me. I did a little googling (sp?) and found an article on First National Television, and a memoir written by a graduate. Apparently, for a time, it was a good school and a very early broadcaster of television in the US.

Tiny USB hub with y-cable draws and distributes twice the power

April 25, 2008 8:00am

"USB 3, expected this year, should fix these problems by upping the power per device to 1.5A from 500mA."

Yay, I hate powered hubs and wall-warts for larger external drives.

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 25, 2008 7:36am

I think Dave G is spot on.
Also, for me, whether or not I want the whole context of the album depends on how much I like the artist. For my favorite artists, only the whole album(s) will do, for others, just a song or two is fine (or a 'best-of album).

Tiny USB hub with y-cable draws and distributes twice the power

April 25, 2008 7:33am

What does the Y-cable form factor have to do with power? After someone answers, I assume that I will have an AHA! moment, but right now I don't understand how a USB hub without a transformer can be considered to be 'powered'.

Against Ben Stein's wishes, lizards rapidly evolve after introduction to island

April 23, 2008 1:14pm

#89 - No, not LITERALLY. He understands that much of it is allegories and morality tales. And, it also has inherent faults from being written and re-translated so long ago before we knew that the Earth was round and not the center of the solar system, and how the Sun works etc.

"Snail" Espresso Machine Prototype

September 20, 2007 5:19am

If it's an espresso machine as the style and headline suggest, then it almost certainly uses the E.S.E. standard espresso pods, which are reasonably priced and produced by many manufacturers, unlike "coffee" pods, which tend to be expensive and proprietary.
