If Cory held up such furniture as "wonderful", I would be inclined to disagree, yes.

I explained my opinions, and welcomed discourse. In return, was called a dickhead.

Obviously, the definition of politeness means something different here after all.

Placebo pills made for kids

May 30, 2008 11:59am

I don't think this is people telling you to tell kids to shut up.

This is people telling you teaching young children that pills fix everything is bad. Sure, use a placebo. But not one pill shaped.

Also, your arguments for a posteriori knowledge being the key to a valid position need some work. I know a lot of people who've had kids, and are still stupid. And I know a lot of people who haven't, and look after them a hell of a lot better.

UK teen faces prosecution for sign calling Scientology a "dangerous cult"

Aliceinreality: So.. that makes the death toll for the CoS.. 1.

Islam and Judaism/Christianity are all quite happily trying to wipe each other off the face of the earth at the moment, and anyone who gets in the way. If I started listing names of all the people killed by them, even if we narrow it down to the last 12 months, we'd be left with a very, very long post.

And lets not get into the amount of people killed in Africa as a result of the Catholic Church's anti-contraception propoganda, or the amount of people killed by the enforcement of sharia la.

Call me a pampered first-worlder here.. But killing thousands is "tiny oppression" but killing one American is a huge concern in comparison? Could you explain this?

(I'm not defending Scientology. It's a nasty religious organisation. The powerful, recognised religious organisations of the world are a lot, lot worse, however.)

Okay, so: Jesus started up a following. While the majority of "casual" members attended his speeches, to hear his private teachings and conversations recruits had to abandon and express hatred for their families, jobs and livelihoods first. Only then were they allowed into the inner circle and allowed to listen to the Leader's special teachings.

That sounds quite cult-like to me, from the many definitions in this thread.

Deep Core
from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deep Core is a futuristic platform game developed by Dynafield for the Amiga. It was released in 1993 and pusblished by International Computer Entertainment.

Captain Dawnrazer has been sent to save an underwater nuclear research base which has been invaded by strange aliens. A platform game, Dawnrazer must work himself through nine levels (with additional sublevels and bonus levels). The game offers a variety of six weapons, all of which can be upgraded via power-ups.

Einstein: Religion is "childish," "primitive"

May 14, 2008 1:20pm

@evidence

I don't mind at all when someone has homosexual relations with me. I take it as a compliment, really, as long as I've consented beforehand. This kinda messes up your intuitivist argument for the Bible there.

Also, plenty of people know "in their hearts" that other races are inferior, other religions are evil, other sexualities a sin. "Knowing something in your heart" just means you really, really believe it. It doesn't make it true.

"The notion that religion is a proper field, in which one might claim expertise, is one that should not go unquestioned. That clergyman presumably would not have deferred to the expertise of a claimed 'fairyologist' on the exact shape and colour of fairy wings. Both he and the bishop thought that Einstein, being theologically untrained, had misunderstood the nature of God. On the contrary, Einstein understood very well exactly what he was denying."

Teen in skimpy dress denied prom entrance

If the prom dress code in it's entirity consists of 5 rules, all for girls, I'd be very, very surprised.

The other dress code provided by the school is rather more whole, and a lot more strict:

YOUNG MEN
Male students will not be permitted to wear earrings on campus.

MISCELLANEOUS GUIDELINES:
HEAD COVERING unacceptable (Scarves, "Do rags", caps, etc.)

I can't find the full dress code for the prom in this thread or anywhere else, only the Summer Recovery Program one, and lone 5 rules given for the prom.

Teen in skimpy dress denied prom entrance

May 13, 2008 1:00pm

#142 & #143

You seem to misunderstand my argument.

The enforcement of such dress codes affect more students than the readily apparent example in this thread. The aforementioned LGBT community (who apparently I'm "soapboxing" for even mentioning, so I'll say no more), or students who choose to express their faith or self through their clothing.

Would wearing a hijab or jewish cap to your prom be basis for being turned away? After all, niether fit the western "formal dress" code. Should a girl wearing a tuxedo or boy in a prom dress be turned away at the door?

I hope through these examples I've clarified my point. By limiting what students can wear to their prom, you're merely imposing a eurocentric, cisgendered and christian set of rules on a diverse group.

So, in summary "Love it or leave it"?

nice..

I find it hilarious the amount of "zomg freedom of expression" people here who are against her.

It's this kind of attitude that leads to transgendered people being turned away from prom night, or gay couples being shood out. It's pandering to social norms at the expense of personal freedom, and the fact that anyone here supports that is a huge dissappointment.

Creepy slacks ad from 1970

May 13, 2008 5:53am

I prefer humanism or gender egalitarianism. Men and women both face problems based upon presumptions of gender and roles implied by that, as well as those who choose not to live as either. We should aim to make all gender-based descrimination a thing of the past. I don't think "feminism" describes that fully as it only works towards defeating the obstacles for one group.

Guys, seriously. Everything is art, art is undefinable.

"Does this mean I should pay everyone!? For everything!?"

No, it just means that what you pay for and what you don't have the same relevance. It's subjective, which is pretty much the whole point.

Anyway, I agree with the "It shouldn't matter" sentiment. No one's being harmed, they should leave Isaacs alone.

Step 1: Google "Jackson Pollock"
Step 2: Facepalm

You are quite definitely alone here. Anything that the artist puts meaning into is art, and arguably anything the viewer brings meaning to is also art. This was generally agreed upon in the early 20th century, with the urinal installation, etc.

The difference between pornography and art is nonexistant.

Yeah, this really is getting into silly levels of mod-drama. JLBraun's far and away from any sort of trollish behavior, so it's completely uncalled for.
