Some China firms outsourcing to USA to cut costs
May 7, 2008 2:24pm
NYC-inspired cardboard dollhouses
May 7, 2008 9:18am
I will some day make these for my future children for a fraction of the cost. (Even when the future dollar is nearly worthless.)
Bike wheel consisting of spokes with shoes on the end
May 4, 2008 8:16am
I've seen shoes with curvy bottoms (some sort of orthopedic shoe, maybe?) that might work better for this concept.
Shelby County, TN Sheriff: watch out for photographers and radical greens, they might be terrorists
April 29, 2008 9:25am
"Makes me wonder just what they're up to in the sunflower state!"
There are no other crimes there I guess so they have to harass guys doing cool stuff. It's the same in any small town. Burbank, right in the middle of Los Angeles, is a small town with small town cops. Catch a guy jaywalking and 4 squad cars will show.
Andy Warhol: "Either once only, or every day."
April 28, 2008 4:25pm
Makes absolutely no sense. Which sounds just about right for Warhol.
Luscious photos and reports from Farmers' Markets
April 24, 2008 9:51am
I go to farmers markets every weekend to buy strawberries. If they got any sweeter my teeth would rot out.
Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set
April 24, 2008 9:48am
I thought, "Hey...my extremely flat-footed wife might like these Vibram shoes Cory's talking about!" Then I saw them and thought, "Hey, my wife would kill me if I made her wear those!"
11 students suspended for banana prank
April 23, 2008 9:31pm
Whoever suspended these kids was a complete drag when he was in high school and he's a complete drag now.
Pinkberry's "natural" desserts are made of toxic labratory gunk
April 23, 2008 4:25pm
Is this why I crave it like a pregnant woman? The nearest Pinkberry is too far from me. So I've taken to going to one of the many clones around town with exactly the same product and sometimes even better. I call them all Fakeberry.
Experiment: 96% of passers-by ignore famous artist's street painting
April 23, 2008 10:38am
Pointless. Agreed with #1. The end.
MSN Music customers lose *all* their music the next time they buy a new PC
April 22, 2008 9:48pm
Tunebite can un-DRM all that music, but it would take quite some time if anyone has bought a significant amount of music from the MSN music store.
Genetically distinct photoshop fetish discovered

Disneyland bans pictures in its parking lots
April 22, 2008 8:35am
This calls for a Flickr group of that entire parking lot.
Middlesbrough cops, goons and clerks grab and detain photographer for shooting on a public street
April 22, 2008 8:33am
I'm anxious to hear from a tourist treated like this. Certainly can't be good for business in the UK for the locals to harass all that money coming in.
Gun owners are the happiest people in the US
April 21, 2008 4:17pm
34% will sound quite low to some European friends of mine. I have a Swedish friend who asked me if I had a gun since he assumed all Americans had them. (I do not.)
Starving people in Haiti eating mud
April 18, 2008 12:48pm
Heartbreaking, indeed. However, I would have thought twice about making the face of this tragedy a woman with 18 children in that video. Because that's just fucking ridiculous.
KCET interviews Jaime Hernandez, Johnny Ryan and other LA cartoonists
April 11, 2008 5:48pm
Whoever edited these should have their After Effects taken away. Those random words that would appear HUGE on-screen for no reason are amateurish and annoying.
That aside, Jaime Hernandez is one of my favorites. Thanks for the link!
Aqua Leung
April 10, 2008 5:34pm
Mark Smith's one of the best new writers in comics. And I'm not just saying that because he's my pal. Well, partly. But he writes fun fun comics!
LA Times on home of the French Dip sandwich
April 6, 2008 10:53pm
Yeah..the pre-dip. I was taken aback by that the first time I dined at Philippe's. And I wasn't blown away by the sandwich either. Until I spread their brown mustard on it. Holy cow. I almost ate the plate.
What did Da Vinci look like?
April 1, 2008 2:02pm
#6: The nose continues to grow as we age, so it makes sense that the statue (which is Leonardo at his youngest) has the thinnest nose.
Sidewalk Psychiatry graffiti
April 1, 2008 1:54pm
Tagging one's nickname all over the place hundreds of times isn't art. Everything else is up for grabs.

Boooo! They disappeared one by one over the course of the day. :(
Anti-emo pogroms rage throughout Mexico
March 27, 2008 9:25am
I don't condone violence against anyone. Still, this gives me the giggles.
Pig bladder powder regrows human finger
March 24, 2008 12:59pm
15: He cut it off on the propeller of a remote control airplane, not a model plane. I've seen a guy almost get his hand cut off by one of those.
Pig bladder powder regrows human finger
March 24, 2008 11:33am
Marvel Comics' The Lizard had it all wrong.
Target Selling Indie Games with Matching T-Shirts
March 23, 2008 6:33pm
Dropped by the Target in Burbank (suburb of Los Angeles). They had one shirt left, Tower of Goo. I bought it. Glad it was a medium. Burbank's a bit of a nerd center, being close to several movie, tv, and animation studios so I'm not surprised they're all gone.
As for the game, it seems more like a proof of concept but it's playable and has neat physics. I suck at it.
In the age of ebooks, you don't own your library
March 23, 2008 12:20pm

Artist chided for wrapping street art in black cloth
March 23, 2008 9:44am
By the way, I was posting on behalf of artists, being one myself. Pull all the pranks you like. Just don't damage my shit.
Starcadia, get over yourself.
Artist chided for wrapping street art in black cloth
March 22, 2008 3:36pm
It would be different if the art were damaged in any way. Not exactly anger-worthy to pull black cloth of your precious artwork. Artists, get over yourselves.
Rudimentary math skills among fish
March 22, 2008 9:19am
Agreed with all others suspicious of the "math" aspect of this. If anything, they recognize a larger group of fish rather than the fish sitting there and counting individuals to determine group size.
Fun sticker: "Toilet cameras are for research"
March 20, 2008 8:13am
I have a version of this sticker in my home bathroom that I got out of Mad magazine years ago. :)
Clips from cult movie Rat Pfink a(nd) Boo Boo
March 11, 2008 10:42pm
I caught the last 20 minutes of this movie on television last Friday night in a Pismo Beach hotel. I was riveted and confused by it. The first thing I did when I got home was Google it.
Suspicious beard terrorist poster parody imitates life
March 10, 2008 8:17pm
And people thought I was crazy when I would shave my beard before flights.
New Jack Kirby coffee table art book
March 9, 2008 11:20pm
How many goddamn Jack Kirby books do I have to buy??? One more, I guess...

Man creates vigilante robot to battle drug dealers
March 5, 2008 8:27am
It only takes one dude to walk up calmly to one side of that thing and push it over.
Bag with gun shape
March 4, 2008 8:23pm
That thing is expensive! Can't wait for the inevitable Chinese rip-off for 20 bucks.
Also, if anyone thinks that having a huge imprint of a gun on the outside of your bag means you have a gun in your bag, then this country's more retarded than I imagined. This isn't a cartoon, for chrissakes.
Fake cold remedy Airborne settles lawsuit -- get your cash back

Awww...Pea Soup Anderson's is a must-stop for the kitsch alone. I've only had the soup once and it wasn't bad. Tastes like every other bowl of pea soup I've ever had. We'll have to try Ellen's next time.

I already use Tunebite for the very few DRM files that I come into contact with.
Action-figure sculpture lamp
February 18, 2008 5:08pm
I just sent a giant box of old action figures to my little nephews. Sigh...I want an ugly lamp!
Cop roughs up teenage skateboarder on video
February 13, 2008 10:54am
There are a dozen or more videos like this on YouTube. I'm not for wrecking public places or private property. But I'm REALLY not for cops abusing their power.
Cop roughs up teenage skateboarder on video
February 13, 2008 10:48am
"The cop should be given a medal" for practically chocking and manhandling and throwing a little scrawny kid on the ground?
How about this: "Hey kids, no skateboarding here. Move away from this area, now."
That's it. No yelling. No revealing daddy issues surfacing. Just doing the job.
Li'l J: hit me up on my mufuggin MySpace.
February 13, 2008 9:20am
Ugh. I feel bad for her ignorance and for the fact that she'll be beaten to a pulp before the end of the day by any black kids that happen to know her.
Yoko sues seeks to block trademark of "Lennon" - **UPDATE**
February 12, 2008 7:51pm
Why would not calling her band Lennon end her career? Just change it and move on.
Also, are all her fans music fans or fans of naked tattooed chicks?
Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends on Google Video

Raquel Welch: Space-Girl Dance
January 17, 2008 6:01pm
Then there's this bit of genius, sadly yet appropriately set to the rap song Walk It Out:
Bright lights cause big sneezes
January 16, 2008 8:28pm
I don't sneeze with sudden exposure to bright light. But if I'm having trouble getting a sneeze out, any bright light makes it come faster. I always look like a freak when I'm in front of other people and making the "I'm about to sneeze" face while looking for an exposed light bulb to look at.
Man gets disorderly conduct charge for writing vulgar message on check
January 15, 2008 3:46pm
Yikes. Any time I write a check to a friend, I almost always write something horrible on the memo line. I anxiously await the follow-up call/email.
UFO in texas pursued by military jets, say witnesses
January 15, 2008 3:42pm
Steve Allen's a talented comedian but I don't know if he knows anything about guessing velocities.
Bang bang, you're egg!
January 13, 2008 6:49pm
Can one make pancakes with these, too? That would be cool.
End of skeptic James Randi's million dollar challenge
January 8, 2008 10:51am
#12: "I know that the paranormal events that happen in my haunted house is real."
I've had a few experiences in old houses that at the time I thought were genuine hauntings. But with a few minutes of critical thinking, I've been able to discount them all.
I find Randi's challenge parameters more than fair. Stupendously fair, in fact. Independent, double-blind testing. It's as fair as it can get.
I'd love to see all the evidence you've collected that proves your house is haunted. I'll pass it along to Randi.
Spoiled teenage pageant princess
January 7, 2008 9:07am
They should have set aside some of that pageant money for speech therapy. The girl talks like she's partially deaf.
Thuggy Stardust and the Hustlers from Mars: Bowie/gangsta rap mashup
January 7, 2008 8:57am
JJasper: Niggy Tardust by Saul Williams? It's not a mash-up record.
I haven't listened to this yet, but I haven't given up on mash-ups either. Most are horrible and usually badly mixed and horribly timed. But every once in a while, a gem will come through that makes me spend the day looking for more.
Eerily graceful Indian traffic merging
January 5, 2008 6:39pm
Reminds me of traffic in the Philippines. Same kind of driving. I thought I was gonna die every time I went out. When I got back to where I was staying after a day out, I'd blow my nose and it looked like I'd been snorting charcoal dust.
Warren Ellis's angry, profane Three Laws of Robotics
January 5, 2008 9:48am
Esther: He writes comic books, usually the superhero variety with biting commentary. Call them superhero comics for people who used to like superhero comics. (He did one that essentially had a Superman type and a Batman type as lovers.)
This sounds like typical Ellis, and I love a lot of his comics, but I wonder who the first guy was to refer to robots calling humans "meat bags". Because if it's Futurama, then Ellis could have been a little more creative here.
Surprising origins of a face drawing
January 3, 2008 3:24pm
I read this article awhile back while doing the usual random link-surfing. Such a great story. With a conclusion made possible by the internet.
UK mall bans grandparents for trying to photo their grandkids
January 3, 2008 12:07pm
I've had artist friends kicked out of malls for sketching passers-by. It's ridiculous.
Virgin Mary on living room wall
January 3, 2008 9:07am
My eyes rolled all the way around for this one. Man, that hurt.
Former Dateliner turned Media Lab geek explains why news sucks
January 1, 2008 8:13pm
I first heard about Six Sigma from an episode of NBC's 30 Rock. I thought Tina Fey had made it up. It's less funny now that it's real.
Fox helps itself to photo of blogger's dog
December 26, 2007 9:26am
Even at low res you can see that the dog's little chin wrinkle flaps are exactly the same as Fox's. Anyone saying "the rug is different!" might as well say "the Fox dog has a hat!" I'm a professional Photoshop user. My wife is an amateur, at best, and she could have done this and have it air. Low res TV is remarkably forgiving. I bet the original Photoshop image looks like shit compared to how it aired.
I agree that it was probably a mistake by some low-on-the-totem employee. Fox is still responsible. They put it on TV.
New Disneyland monorails
December 20, 2007 11:32pm
Damn. I was just there a couple weeks ago and rode the Monorail for the first time in probably 15 years. Wish I'd waited a bit! (It was cool to ride the subs again though.)
Walt Disney's grave
December 12, 2007 9:02am
If you're ever in Westwood, California, check out the cemetery there. It's the creepiest celeb cemetery, where visitors leave lipstick marks on Rudolph Valentino's tomb and fans around the world leave gifts for the body of that little girl from Poltergeist. --shudder--
Mall cops flag juicy cars for thieves
December 12, 2007 8:58am
That is a bright yellow. I'd say thieves can see them from inside the mall.
Post your flight hassles at MyBadFlight.com
December 7, 2007 2:32pm
This website is not ready for prime time. Looks like it's buggy as hell, already has spam posts, and doesn't have a preview so there are tons of blank entries.
Magazine subscription cards are a pack of lies
November 30, 2007 11:28pm
My wife bought a car from her car salesman cousin. When she inquired what does "extra clean" really mean, he said it was just bull$hit to sell the car. In fact, ALL the signs were. Lies are everywhere!
Amazon Kindle: the Web makes Amazon go bad crazy
November 20, 2007 7:11pm
You'd never know this thing had any downsides with the thorought handjob Charlie Rose gave Besos last night on his show. (Not sure if it's Rose's fault, but he threw a lot of research at Besos and none of it was devil's advocate stuff.)
I also think this is a cool idea. I'm going on a plane tomorrow and bringing three books with me, 2 hardcovers. I'd rather have a Kindle-type device. But I want my books like I want my music. I want total control of my media.
Video: First Footage of Ghostbusters Game
November 16, 2007 9:43pm
I played the hell out of the old version, but on a Commodore 64 (way better than an Apple II :) ).
This new version looks great. PS3 only though. I so don't want to buy another console.

What is this heirloom mystery object?
October 19, 2007 11:52am

Old power plant looks good, new one looks bad
October 11, 2007 5:12pm
The whole place looks like Shawshank Prison to me.
Person ditches house on the Hollywood freeway
September 25, 2007 11:02am
My wife and I drove by this thing the other day. I didn't see it, but I thought for a second that she was losing it when she said, "There's a house on the freeway."
