That's a weird statement. Apart from the bikers being assholes or not, if they are protesting something I fully expect them to go on for a decade or however long it takes to be heard. Your statement makes it that much more an issue of free speech.

Very true. I found the honours system on the Danish isle Bornholm delightful and rewarding, and the cherries were good, too. They just had a plastic container out where we took our change from. Very cool.

America's war on tourism: airlines to foot the bill for fingerprinting foreigners as the leave the US

I just visited the site Jeff posted, and want to share the following graph with all of you:
http://www.silobreaker.com/NewsTrends.aspx?TrendDrillDownItems=11_303199,11_303293,11_78001&
I hope it's still as wonderfully silly in a couple of days. It pits (amount? of what? there's no real legend for the scale) Ipod against Acts of Terrorism against Europeans. As you can clearly see, there is less (reporting of? who knows?) terrorism when there's more Ipod. Hence, Steve Jobs is Osama Bin Laden.
Europeans are in the clear though.

America's war on tourism: airlines to foot the bill for fingerprinting foreigners as the leave the US
March 17, 2008 7:42am
#2: it does make sense for air travelers to foot the bill for travel-related expenses
This is nonsense. Yes, when you fly to the USA, you need a ticket, a suitcase and a clean pair of underwear. Perhaps bring some sunglasses.
See? Those are all reasonable travel-related expenses. Nobody's complaining. When some government makes a new rule that is useless, arbitrary and privacy invading, AND lets the victim (notice that word? I used it on purpose) foot the bill, we're bordering on the criminally insane.
The only thing keeping USA tourism from being non-existent is the sorry state of the dollar. Something to be proud of, I guess.

> as a US citizen, it's your right.
Except if, you know, you're running Linux, because you can't see the website. Yes, SL has been "announced" for Linux. Because MS and Linux are real good chums. It's just good practice! Like following standards! Oh, and they also have SL for the Mac. Since you're a Mac user, I don't have to educate you on the amazing state of MS software on the Mac. So yes, like the BBC player and so many other MS/other proprietary sw before, it reeks.
If it's a right, it should be directly funded. Not by MS or some other corporation, because they ultimately do not care about you, they care about the bottom line. This is why DRM exists. It should be funded by the state. But noooo, let's not be socialists! That's right next to commies! Let's let the free market (whatever) decide! Let's have McDonalds school forms!
There's just too much whining going on. Choose the free market, choose small government, reap what you sow. Just don't come crying when it doesn't quite turn out the way you envisioned it. When the "best" company turns out to be Microsoft.
Well done.

Oh no you're not getting off that easily. This is not a case of "Let's all think positive thoughts and everything will be well!" I totally agree with you that biting cynicism isn't going to help your cause, but you have to understand that not only the people in the US are cynical, also pretty much all of the foreigners. Well, except some politician boot lickers, but you get my point. Especially after the monkey man was elected a SECOND time.
You're going to have to come up with something WAY, WAY better than that.
I'm sorry if you didn't intend it that way, I can see that you might not have. It's just such a disappointing state of affairs. The USA used to be so cool, the land of the free and all that.
Also, perhaps I've just proven your point.
Video of man firing 18 rounds from a pistol in 3 seconds
February 5, 2008 2:23am
I've never really understood the "we can overthrow our unconstitutional government" thing. That was written in another age, people. This will never, EVER, happen. I dare you say it's not true. Nothing will ever get the "militia" out of their homes, off their couches, away from the TV.
And don't even say it's a well-regulated militia. It's codified, and that's pretty much all you can say about it.
The next point I would like to bring up is that unlike a club or a knife, guns are really easy to use. It's really easy to kill someone, even without force. This can be explained as a good thing (women, the frail, etc.) I say with this great force comes great responsibility. I do not see great responsibility. I see a jack-ass firing a gun wildly at nothing.
Also, since we're bringing up gay marriage anyway, isn't it true that the constitution needed to be interpreted against this basic freedom? Land of the free, something or other, but not two guys wanting to marry. On the other hand, the gun thing is set in stone! Militia! Government overthrowings!
I would like to link to a Wikipedia article as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocrisy
I do see what's interesting about guns though. Mechanically delicate, well oiled, with a nice snap, they're really pretty cool. The weight is just right, nicely balanced, the whole thing. Plus, since I'm a boy, I like it when stuff goes boom. And, yes, the power is fascinating.

Dublin city council cancels free citywide WiFi: "Illegal under Euro law"
January 11, 2008 5:16am
@Tom, 8: "Yeah, I REALLY want the government to be able to control my internet connection, be able to intercept, record and monitor it at will."
They already do. In some countries, they need a warrant. In others, not so much.
What makes you think that private corporations will not snoop on your email? At least with the government, the bottom line isn't profit. With a corp, pretty much anything that makes money will be done. Sell your emails to Mr. Spammer A. Spam? Done. Sift through your browsing history to see what you really need to buy next? Done. Keep this information forever? Done. Get bought up by a bigger fish, pooling more of your data? Done.
Again, even with everything in private hands, the government STILL gets to see your data. There's no need to worry about that.
So yes, I would really like to see basic connectivity from my government. They have libraries as well (and they keep track of what you borrow! Gasp!) and schools (they know what you know!!!) and toll booths (they know where you are!!!!!!), so this would be a logical step.
Either way, my point is that it would be good to have the wifi, and bad to have a totalitarian, snooping government. These two points can certainly be combined into WIRELESS UTOPIA! WHO'S WITH ME!

Dublin city council cancels free citywide WiFi: "Illegal under Euro law"
January 11, 2008 2:01am
There are no competitors when it comes to roads and rails. There's just no space for another set of tracks. This is not true for Wifi, where there's more than one spot on the spectrum that competitors can use. Also, there are companies who can and do provide internet service, so competition exists (albeit not wireless).
That said, I think it's utterly stupid. I think it's very important to give people a basic network connection. This can only improve education, as well as consumation. (Order from the comfort of your home, etc.)
Make it so that people have a basic level of connectivity, enough for email and light browsing.
If you want more, pay a normal ISP to give you a regular line, complete with youtube, bittorrent, counter-strike, the works.
Only, that way the ISPs would have to compete on service instead of price, or at least point them more in that direction. This is not what ISPs want.

> So religious beliefs make people untrustworthy, even when it comes to server data?
I never said that, did I?
I'm just pointing out that in my opinion, a lot of what is on Conservapedia is scientifically (and sometimes ethically or even morally, depends on your POV) wrong.
Also, I was trying to poke gentle fun. Please, please let us not make this in an us-vs-them thing, it's not worth it. I think there's a lack of respect between religious and non-religious people (yes, both sides.)
I can only explain why I think sites like Conservapedia or wrong. Religious people believe stuff that I don't. Nothing wrong with that. They live their lives according to certain rules, which is on the whole very noble.
Once they start selling their faith as fact, even in the face of undeniable scientific evidence, this is kind of weird and icky.
When the lives of other people, non-religious or of another religion, are being influenced based on beliefs, gut feelings, and faith, a faith that is not shared, that's where it starts going wrong.
Then again, in a democracy, the leading party will not always be the party you chose, so that's how it works.
My point is that Conservapedia is selling their faith for a political agenda, stating their belief as fact, even when it's not. It could be a really good religious website, now it's just a crackpot political pusher, denouncing everything that is not just and right in their eyes.
I've never really understood why religion and science don't match. The bible has a bunch of lessons for us to learn, even if science proves that natural selection exists, right? Why the need to disprove that? Why the need for elaborate websites detailing how it's all wrong? Are people really that nutty?
These are some random thoughts, I hope you can better understand what irks me about Conservapedia and the like. I believe that most people aren't really that radical in their beliefs, and I suppose that this particular website could be seen as proof for the Great Internet Fuckwad Theory.
Either way, the original BB post is kind of stupid in that regard. We really all know that the top 10 pages aren't all homosexuality-related, and it wouldn't have been my choice of post. Then again, this is not my blog.

Would I buy the lexicon if I hadn't already read all the books? I don't think so, but I might.
-> no lost sales
Would I buy any missing books if I received this lexicon as a gift? One could easily assume so.
-> no lost sales, possible rise in sales
Would I stop buying the original books once I read the lexicon, provided I did not already own/had not already read all of them? Well, I don't think so.
->no lost sales
Either way, more exposure = more sales = more moneys = more good. Even bad news is good news, etc. This is good news, so what is her problem? Ah, she's writing her own authorised lexicon? How very interesting.
-> lost sales of OWN lexicon, but that's not what this lexicon covers. It uses portions of the original book, not of JKR's lexicon. So, provided there is significant own input from the lexicon's author(s), this is fair use.
