Lessig publicly humiliates Andrew Keen
March 12, 2008 7:27am
There are many more things you can bust Keen on - like the factual inaccuracies in his book. He quotes statistics untethered from their historical background, so they look bad...until you investigate.
For example, he quotes a study from the late 90s that says, in a survey, 70% of college students admitted they cheated. He uses this as an example of how horrible the Internet is. He fails to mention a study done 30+ years previously in which 75% of students admitted cheating...which completely blows away his argument.
Then there are the flat-out lies. He says that over 50% of Chinese citizens were addicted to opium at the turn of the last century. I have found nothing that backs that up. The highest estimates are about 10%.
There are many more inaccuracies of this nature in his book. Perhaps I will give them to Mr. Lessig for the next time he is on a panel with Keen.
Then again, unlike Mr. Keen, I actually know how to research.
Fluxx -- Nomic card game
January 29, 2008 9:42am
Fluxx is one of my favorite games ever. To those that say there's no strategy involved...well, you're wrong. It's just that your strategy can get cut off at the knees by someone else's actions, thus requiring you to develop a new strategy ASAP. That's the most fun part of the game, to me.
Auction for a haunted house's worth of furnishings
January 11, 2008 3:09pm
Sad! Orleans House was a cornerstone of my 20s - when I was po' and couldn't afford to eat out at someplace like Outback, it allowed me to have a nice-restaurant experience at a low price. It was definitely stuck in the '70s - possibly the '60s - but that was part of its charm.
My boyfriend and I will be in DC in May, and I was hoping to bring him here. Now I'll never have the chance. Sad!
Florida sheriff spreads BS about fake drug made from human waste
November 7, 2007 1:34pm
The sheriff department got its info from the Encyclopedia Dramatica - and there is some question about whether the BBC info is actually true (it basically all traces back to "well, one guy said people were huffing human waste in Africa...")

Linking to Fox makes me feel kinda dirty, but sometimes it has to be done.

That's actually a chain, located in Salem and Peabody, MA. (The photo is of the one in Peabody.) They also have a website where you can buy stuff with their logo:

@Guinness74: are you my cousin? My mom has my dad's voice on her answering machine as her outgoing message. My aunt used to call all the time before she died, just to listen to his voice.
