Weirdest thing about Coachella: Jack Johnson is a headliner while M.I.A., Jens Lekman, Vampire Weekend, Justice, etc...are not.

April 16, 2008 4:49pm
Kudos to her if it's therapeutic. You don't want the public to think you're an asshat then don't be an asshat. That simple. If you're not and someone says you are then you'll still have friends and support..if not..go public with your side. Eventually the back and forth will grow boring to Joe Public but karma may just exist.
Mobile phone strap is a charging/data cable and microSD reader
April 10, 2008 12:53am
Nice..the website isn't made for dumb people as it doesn't explain the choices very well. Through the pictures I still can't tell how it works as a USB charger and SB reader. I know the gray one will work with my Samsung but then where does the USB plug go? ehhhhhh

Black Magic: documentary about Civil Rights and basketball
March 17, 2008 5:22pm
@3 I'm so sad you are forced to have the burden of hating slavery, lynching and the horrors of the racial inequalities of our past like the rest of the the country. Your response looks incredibly idiotic so I'm not going to spend the time to shut down each and every one of your ridiculous complaints.
It's a story about our past and how blacks entered the world of basketball when it was illegal for them to..not about your supreme Jordan-esque jumping abilities being stopped by those of a darker skin color. It's also not about holding their hands or holding it over your head by constantly forcing you to watch tv programs with black people in them. Get some perspective..any perspective above the level of a 5 year-old during a tantrum.
Where Are the Black Tech Bloggers?
March 15, 2008 11:42pm
I think #8 has the best response to this thus far.
Those topics on race come up at every conference in every industry. I think the issue of access to the tools necessary for the tech industry is definitely one that might turn out to have huge gaps based on racial and economic communities.
re: blogging/stuffwhitepeoplelike/websiteihate
Maybe the seeming plethora of white (tech) blogs is because white people are used to their opinions and ideas being accepted more..if not just as personal things but ones to take seriously or be adopted by others. Take the new startup Tumblr and the stuff they have on their homepage/radar. White. Wash. Also, very boring and not at all diverse and lots of the bloggers are tech nerds.
Or maybe since, as one blogger said, they just don't claim their ethnicity because most people don't. And would BoingBoing or any popular site regularly visit such sites for information from other communities that weren't blogging about an ethnic/culture crisis? The internet is special when it comes to having potentially low levels of 'isms' but I don't think it's at all immune from clique communities.
Fake cold remedy Airborne settles lawsuit -- get your cash back
March 4, 2008 9:20pm
Like I said on Consumerist:
I filled out the form knowing I ate the stuff during college because of the claims and the fact that every drugstore (even small locally-owned co-ops) carried them. I got sick anyway like usual but assumed that's the way things go. I guess you really can't trust decent tasting 'medicines'. In the FAQ's it reminds you that the settlement hasn't even been approved yet..that is due to come in June of this year. And then it lets you know that there will probably be appeals filed by the company and that appeals sometimes take years. Ah well, at least I don't live on an oil-covered coast in Alaska.
History of war through food; Dog impersonates boozy Orson Welles.
February 29, 2008 4:49am
@#16 Not saying people shouldn't or should be offended but 9/11 compared to the other atrocities of war depicted seems really small. If anything, I thought the quick depiction of the Holocaust by the annihilation a matzoh cracker would've been the most offensive to people.
Bluetooth-enabled "CharmingBurka"
February 15, 2008 2:32am
I may be a bit short-sighted in my reaction but women who are not wearing it solely out of pride or religion, who are forced to wear it (and this is a different subject, when someone is or isn't forced) aren't going to have access to this kind of garment, let alone the technology that comes with it. By that I don't mean they live in technologically backwards areas, I mean what they are allowed and not allowed to have.
It raises a lot of questions and I think a few people have already commented on a crucial aspect..e.g. #1. Women are killed for actions they aren't responsible for (being raped) and if they are found responsible for breaking laws as this Bluetooth burka would immediately prove I don't want to know what punishment they'll subject the women to. Also, for the women who are in more liberal areas this may be celebrated..the excerpt claims that Islamic law doesn't lay out technological restrictions but isn't that really up for interpretation as most religious laws are? And wouldn't that interpretation just be up to those who have the power to enforce it (the men, judges)? I'd be interested to hear reactions from women who wear burkas. Very fascinating..religion and technology intersecting with gender in the middle.
Unboxing an Apple IIc
February 4, 2008 7:07pm
The design scheme down to the simple font is incredible.
Anyone know why they did away with the rainbow apple?
Also, I just remembered my first computer was an Apple IIgs limited edition that was 'signed' by Steve Wozniak. It's in our basement and in perfect condition. I think we even have the old printer that went with it. I wonder what it would grab on eBay/Craiglist.
Filial piety: letting your father-in-law nurse at your breast

@13 that closing scene was the first thing I thought of. And then rumors about athletes who drink breast milk because of the belief that it strengthens them..I think one MTV Cribs episode featured breast milk in the fridge.

Books that make you dumb: chart
January 25, 2008 3:00pm
It is obviously not in any way scientifically sound..as agreed upon by the readers and maybe even the creator. But I must not have a sense of humor because this isn't remotely funny to me either. I would be interested in a more in-depth..or heck even a surface-depth..project regarding books required by colleges and the outgoing intellect. Most teenagers are rather dumb so there's yet another reason SAT scores aren't at all reliable for a project like this. Anyway, a nice try.

Teenager in CA arrested for aiming his laser pointer at a jetliner, commuter bus, and a police helicopter

TSA is as unpopular as the IRS -- UPDATED
December 23, 2007 6:47pm
The TSA spends an enormous amount of time and money justifying their jobs. Each and every one of the $10.00/hour stumble bums at the checkpoints wants nothing more that to tell his/her boss how they thwarted the terrorists yet again, confiscated someone's water, threw out someone's mouthwash, whatever the case may be.
I wholeheartedly disagree with the assumption that most the TSA agents at checkpoints love their jobs because they're 'fighting a war on terror'. I'm willing to bet that 99% of the applicants are there for a well paying job that doesn't require a college degree and think it's ridiculous to check water bottles as much as we do. In Chicago they pay $13.50 an hour. That's a lot. I applied because it was a lot. I dropped out because the process with ass-backwards, invasive and as someone with a college degree I figured I didn't have to have a job I felt like shit about every day. For not going through the last phase of the process I imagine I'm on some govt shit list or am flagged when I fly. It's not the agents you should hate..TSA is a mess as an organization..the reasons given for its existence are from another mess created by the folks all the way at the top & PNAC. TSA is just a scapegoat and not even close to the actual problems.

"Thank you officer -------- for the tools needed, you're a real pal, Happy Holidays," the note read, with a smiley face drawn next to it."
