Ceramic ray guns

The organic rough feel of the ceramic reminds me of the Red Lectroid technology from Buckaroo Banzai.

House passes bill that will let the RIAA take away your home for downloading music

May 9, 2008 6:55am

Considering the widespread abuse drug property seizure laws see (by greedy police departments who want the funding boost), the home thing is not unthinkable. In fact, it's quite likely.

Oh, and what's that form of government characterized by the convolution of corporate and government power? Starts with an F. Man, this is gonna bug me allll day.

Gun owners are the happiest people in the US

April 21, 2008 3:10pm

Gun ownership is a good wealth indicator. The cheapest gun I ever bought was a used Mossberg 88 pump shotgun for $120, and the cheapest handgun was $200, a used Ruger 95 9mm pistol.

Ammo and range time are also expensive.

It's not a hobby for those who struggle to make rent and buy groceries. Also, you are more likely to own a gun for protection if you have a home, a wife, kids, since you have something to protect.

So basically, middle-class and well-off people tend to be happier and less bitter than struggling people. That's really what this poll is saying.

You could probably take a similar survey of people who own backyard pools against those who don't and get similar results.

Violent video-games are relaxing

I think this rule might work in reverse. Many puzzle and adventure games make me want to kill someone.

XO laptop -- a green miracle of energy efficiency: Video

PVC is actually good for the environment, and all of industrial synthetics, probably one of the best around.

Why? Because PVC is made out of chlorine industrial waste products that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. The reason PVC pipe and so forth is so cheap is that it is literally made from industrial waste.

The PVC traps these harmful gases and degrades slowly over hundreds of years, releasing them at a rate the planet can then deal with safely. It's also one of the easiest vinyls to recycle.

Who cut the cheese? I mean the transoceanic 'net cables?

Big Japanese monsters would have been recorded on sonar by now.

Obviously, these are the Deep Ones! Hail Lord Dagon!

Laser-cut steel "flat" shelving you bend to suit

January 15, 2008 4:55am

Yeah, did they do anything to dull the edges? Sheet metal that's thin enough to bend is usually thin enough to give you a nasty cut, as anyone who works with cheap computer cases can tell you.

Saakashvili regime in Georgia using sonic blasters on civilians?

November 16, 2007 10:58am

For disclosure sake, BoingBoing might want to note that Russia Today is a Russian state-owned news program.

To quote Wikipedia:

"Russia Today TV, more often known as Russia Today is a global English-language news channel from Russia, owned and operated by the TV Novosti division of Russia's state news agency, RIA-Novosti."

Considering the demonstrators are pro-Russian trying to oust the pro-Western government put in place by the Rose Revolution and Russia has been notorious in its use of news for propaganda lately, the report may carry a lot of bias.

Apocalyptic Manhattan 50-building terrain for Warhammer

@ The Boy - If self-censorship is the smart move, that only goes to prove the point, doesn't it?

Apocalyptic Manhattan 50-building terrain for Warhammer

November 15, 2007 5:24am

Funnily enough, this hits on another favorite BoingBoing topic - fear of violating intellectual property rights hampering development.

The artists who created these buildings cannot discuss how they made them on their forums, because it involves plaster casting, a technique which can either be used to make models like these, or unauthorized copies of official terrain or pieces. They even go so far to refer to plaster casting as "the forbidden art". So they don't allow the technique to be discussed.

Why is it forbidden? Because even though it can be used legitimately and beautifully, it might somehow someway by someone be used for illicit purposes. That's almost RIAA logic there.

Georgian riot cops in Mickey Mouse gas-masks

Mickey Mouse? When I saw these, they were a dead-ringer for Half Life 2's Combine Troopers.

"zzzz... Pick up the can!"
