Woman's World reviewed in Very Short List

April 23, 2008 1:26pm

I thought this was going to be about the magazine "woman's world" which reviles me every time I am in the checkout line at the grocery store. I could review that in a very short list too:
1. More tips on cleaning your house!
2. Cooking for your family!
3. Lose weight!

Those are definitely the only 3 things ever on my mind!

Sorry... that was pretty off topic.

Shenzhen travelogue graphic novel

I've read his "Pyongyang: a Journey in North Korea" and really enjoyed it a lot. I'll have to check this one out too.

Review: A week with Sony's Vaio TZ Premium subnotebook

April 14, 2008 3:55pm

Ditto on the wondering about the OSX on the TX.

I do love my TX a whole lot though. The smaller keyboard didn't take long to get used to back when I first got it and now I find it faster to type on. The long battery performance is definitely one of the best features also.
I wanted something small, portable, powerful (enough) and durable for field work, travel, studying in cafes and lugging back and forth from school. The TX is exactly what I needed and I imagine the TZ is a new and improved version of this for me to covet.
There is also the added bonus that a sexy laptop is a great nerd-boy attractor for a nerd lovin' girl like myself.

HOWTO bake Nintendo 1UP cakes

March 28, 2008 9:22am

Those look fantastic and the tops contain large amount of chocolate, which I am always down with. I wonder if I can find vegan white chocolate? These would be great for my DS-lovin' friends b-day

Forward Through Backwards Time

March 24, 2008 12:05am

If the people on the escalator are going down backwards it means in forward time they would be going up forwards, yet she is on a different escalator also going up forwards. Two up escalators?

I did enjoy that though, especially the cute music.

Tom Waits's dog food commercial

March 21, 2008 9:06am

"He doesn't just litigate vs. soundalike commercials, he does it when they ask him to use a song, he says no, and then they basically copy it."

Which happens to all musicians. You have the choice of 'selling out' and having your song in a commercial or saying no and having them just copy it anyways. And of course sometimes you aren't even given the choice, they just copy it because it is cheaper.

Big square USB-key duplicator

March 21, 2008 8:25am

Yeah, I love the design also. Too bad it is not something I need...
Well not yet at least. Maybe when our robot overlords come the only way to fight back will be uploading viruses into their programming by sneaking up behind them and shoving in a USB key preloaded with the virus. Then these things will be valuable weapons factories.
Just a thought.

Amtrak implements new anti-terror screening procedures

February 23, 2008 11:19pm

I just took amtrak Toronto to NYC and back this past week and despite the fact that it was very long it was reasonably comfortable and there were no bag checks (yet). Driving your car somewhere might be cheaper as a one shot but owning a car in general is much more expensive.

I did notice that there was a definite skin-colour theme to those who were taken off the train for additional screening at the border crossing from Canada into the States though.

HP UMPC 2133 Looks Like 12-Inch Powerbook Reborn

February 20, 2008 4:53pm

The small sony viao tx series looks nicer, weighs about the same and is only a tiny bit larger. That is what I have and I have been really really happy with it. The screen is amazing and I've had my battery last between 6 and 7 hours with some of the power saving options.
It was pretty expensive though.

About that ginormous beef recall

February 18, 2008 6:54pm

I think my favourite part of this recall was that (at least in the BBC article) they also talked about how several workers were charged with animal cruelty and the place was told to suspend operations for animal cruelty a little while ago.
It seems kind of silly to me that the things they listed count as cruelty when horrible factory farm practices are A-okay. I guess it is only not OK when it is caught on a video camera by the humane society. I don't understand where this fuzzy line is drawn and why it is drawn where it is.

Smell of pot smoke not grounds for arrest and search in Canada

February 13, 2008 4:03pm

Most cops, at least in the larger cities in Canada, have already realized it's just silly to hassle everyone they suspect might have been smoking pot. I was sharing a joint with a circle of friends in an alley outside a bar and we suddenly realize that there is a police officer standing right behind us. IT was incredibly obvious what we were doing but the officer just kind of stepped into the circle, made fun of us for a minute and told us to go smoke somewhere else. I realize this doesn't hold true for every cop but I think most of them know it's a losing and pointless battle. It's more constructive to suggest we go somewhere more private than to search us, confiscate a couple grams of pot and haul us to the station while elsewhere a bunch of rowdy drunks are smashing a phone booth.

Cop roughs up teenage skateboarder on video

February 13, 2008 3:45pm

#93 so we should let cops intimidate us when they are screaming in our faces for no reason? Next time a cop is yelling at me and calling me names for calmly telling him that no, he cannot come into my house uninvited just because there was a noise complaint for the party, I should fall to my knees, call him your highness and beg for mercy just so he doesn't beat me up? The officer is already disrespecting me so why should I respect him? If at that point I tell him to get the fuck off my property, asshole, should he be allowed to kick my ass because I should know better than to swear at an angry cop? No, he should give me a ticket for the noise complaint and get off my lawn.
Same thing here. There were actions that cop could have taken that wouldn't have involved yelling and violence. Like giving the kid a ticket, or contacting his parents.

Hamster's Lunch at Coco's in Los Angeles

February 13, 2008 2:55pm

Unless I see any actual impact on content I'm not going to bitch about the sponsorships. If money from ads allows boingboing to continue to exist, and those who make it to be able to afford to continue to do what they do then I say go for it.
Of course I can't even see most of the ads anyways thanks to adblock plus...
I am also guessing that the note at the bottom is not going to be on every post that is made using windows mobile, just the first.

That wasn't meant to be a statement for or against the sponsored pages. Who am I to demand of something I view for free that they not try and make money somehow?

I always forget that I have the adblocking plug in on firefox. Apparently boingboing isn't ad free... I never knew.

Rise of ayahuasca ceremonies in USA

February 5, 2008 8:16pm

Flip, what ever your experiences with such things are I feel like you are coming off as way too know-it-all for something that is very personal and experienced differently by everyone. I don't really think that is your intention though.

URGENT: Canadians need to take action on Canadian DMCA NOW

February 5, 2008 7:02am

The indie scene seems to care a lot more than most from what I've seen... probably because we are the ones least likely to be able to afford to fight judgments handed down from the high DMCA overlord and most likely to get fcked over by it.

Clarion workshop now accepting applications

I lie in bed with my cat on my chest and my laptop on my legs sometimes. The key is getting the cat to keep his head down. As babies don't really have fully functioning necks at this stage in the game I would say Cory is pretty golden.

Photos of the American West drying up

February 4, 2008 3:51pm

I remember one of my profs in field school talking about how several dams in Alberta that are supposedly for irrigation purposes were actually part of a secret plot to divert water to the US. Not sure if I believe it...

Canada has many of its own water issues (over use of groundwater and the massive amounts of water taken from the Athabasca for use in the oil sands come to mind). I can't see us willingly diverting large amounts of water to the states. It would impact a lot of industry, agriculture and power generation. Also Canadians seem to view it is their patriotic duty to protect "our" water from "them". Funny how that doesn't extend to any of our other natural resources.

Fine news

Congratulations to you and your family.

This was a good post to start the day with. Partly because of it's cute baby nature and partly because it made me happy to see the long stream of positive comments. Little Poesy is starting her life with the good thoughts of a lot of people.

They are probably fleeing to the terrorist haven that is Canada. I better be on the look-out...

Massimo's is incredibly delicious. I love the Margarita. So simple but so awesome.
Now unfortunately I have to head the two blocks to Amato's for a vegan slice. Oh cheese, how I miss thee sometimes.

Mathematics of waiting for the bus

January 23, 2008 12:05pm

I think I'm missing something here...
Isn't the bus going to reach its stops at the same time whether you walk to the next one or not? I mean If you start walking and the bus catches up to you at the third stop then the bus is reaching that stop at the same time as it would if you just waited and caught it at the first stop. You aren't saving any time.
Really this is just a matter of whether you get restless or cold and want to walk. Or if you feel lazy and want to wait.
Unless obviously you can just get there faster by walking. If your destination is only a km away maybe you should just be walking there all the time anyways?

The only way we will know peak oil has occurred is in retrospect years later.

Poker game interrupted by police raid

January 16, 2008 11:45am

I don't think 100 people were ever playing at once. It sounds like it was kind of a poker club where different groups would get together for tourneys. I don't see anything wrong with starting up something like that in your area to find other people who want to play.
