Wikihistory: sf story about the revert-wars among time-travellers -- "everybody kills Hitler on their first trip"

They just can't get no respect around here.

Certain Sheratons have them too.

#3, Hyatt Place is a pretty nice "place", I had my expectations thoroughly exceeded. The TV feed there is truly HD (not some horribly compressed media server stuff).

Teenagers unhappy about security cameras in school lavatories

#9 -
Obviously I'm going to be guilty of some generalizations here but there is a level of vandalism, unprovoked attacks and a complete disregard for property in the UK that I have always found surprising.

Vicious crimes are often committed "just for the fun of it" with no further reason needed. By comparison, our crime seems to be caused by a real (or perceived) motive or need.

It's a subtle distinction, perhaps others who've experienced the same came chime in more effectively.

Teenagers unhappy about security cameras in school lavatories

February 26, 2008 2:07pm

Having lived extensively on both sides of the Atlantic I can vouch to Britain's problems with a type of casual & opportunistic crime largely unknown in the US.

The solution to this epidemic has been the implementation of hundred of thousands of cameras throughout both public & private spaces. These bathroom units are merely an extension of the acceptance that the British people seem to have towards these intrusions, all in the name of public safety.

Unfortunately, as Sir Winston said, those who sacrifice freedom for security soon find they have neither.

Site helps you find rotten neighbors

February 22, 2008 11:53am

I am I just an old softie or does the idea of nice-neighbor.com appeal to others?

Stuff like:
- Mrs XXX helped watch the kids when I had to go to the hospital.
- The XXX family lets the local familys use their pool.
- Mr XXX mows my yard for me since I've had a hip operation.

You get the idea.

Great financial advice for writers

I find that 30% is a good number for taxes (I'm married, have 2 children & a home office deduction). This generally leaves enough of a refund to max out an SEP retirement contribution (which is a no-brainer).

Catch is, you have to deposit the money in the SEP as you file the taxes which means you need a little float to carry you until the refund check arrives.

Jasmina Tešanović: Kosovo

As these countries divide themselves ever further are we seeing a return to something similar to the medieval city states?

Hmmm, I think I spoke too soon. Perhaps he does get it. An attitude of "let that content fly so we can have more customers" seems like a step in the right direction.

Sorry, call me a cynic, but I think his 1st concern may be point 2), namely the risk of liability.

More irrefutable proof that art is created by the artist & not his tools. I work in audio & so often it seems that as the tools get more complex the work becomes less inspired.

There is a point in creating where one's tools become transcendent. Constantly switching or upgrading these tools perhaps detracts from this mastery?

Pop-up market in Bangkok

I saw a similar situation at a market in Shanghai with a police "raid." Bustling commerce to ghost town & back to bustling commerce, all within 7 minutes.

I've had reputable, independent jewelers in the US compliment me on my Cartier watch whilst they charge extra to use the specific Cartier case & strap tools. The watch in question? $15 in Shanghai.

Now you tell me...

Chinese luxury market -- all smoke and mirrors?

October 23, 2007 5:07am

I've never understood how luxury fashion goods sell for retail in China anyway. You can go the markets, befriend a seller ("show me the good stuff") & buy the same items for pennies.

I suspect that many of the so-called counterfeits are actually the real thing that's found a back door out of the legitimate factory.

Micky Mouse vs Mickey Mouse

October 17, 2007 3:49pm

PBS' History Detectives covered this story recently. Some interesting facts came out -

1) "Micky" was only one, & not even the first, of many very similar mouse toys dating back to the late teens.
2) There are no court records or filings related to the Disney court case.
3) Perfromo did manage to trade mark the Micky name & a patent filing for the toy was traced.

One Laptop Per Child machines for sale this Christmas: buy two, one goes to developing world

September 24, 2007 9:44am

I don't see OLPC addressing what will surely be the biggest problem with this project & all others that involve sending things of value to developing nations namely corruption. Which will ensure that these computers, like so many other good hearted gestures from the West, will go straight into the hands of those who would re-sell them.

Until we can rid the World of corruption efforts of this nature will be futile.

Rick Rubin, Subscription Music, and Failure

September 4, 2007 8:14am

When you start spinning statements like this "it was considered worth noting that her album....dipped only 7 percent rather than falling by the usual double digits" I think the writing is well & truly on the wall.

The subscription model he proposes has been tried time & again with little success. It appears that customers like to own their media, whether video, audio or gaming.

The rest of the article is pretty much trodden old ground, Def Jam history & some contemporary color. Nowhere do I see an outstanding vision to save the music industry.

Free ebook: A Woman who went to Alaska (1902)

August 30, 2007 3:08pm

Another wonderful Alaska book is Hudson Stuck's "10'000 Miles With A Dog Sled." English born Stuck was appointed Episcopal Archbishop for the Alaska territory at the end of the 19th century, a role he took very seriously. For a product of blue-blood Victorian England his attitudes to the native peoples were surprisingly enlightened (for example, he rages against the corrupting influence of Russian fur traders).

Tough as any intrepid Victorian explorer his stiff upper lip attitude to the dangers & deprivations of back country life make for amusing reading (apparently he dressed for dinner on the trail).

A compendium of excellent counterfeits

August 30, 2007 10:40am

Nice but some of his prices are way out of line. In Shanghai a good (real sweep movement, automatic) Rolex fake should cost you no more than $15. As for bags, if you pay more than $30 you're being had. However, I've seen 2 reputable jewelers fooled by my wife's not-so-real Cartier Santos!
