The Space Cube: a cute but unbearably expensive fruit-sized computer, possibly alien in origin

August 27, 2008 6:39pm

#3 - So APART from a spacecraft, which very few of us own, where would this be useful? World's smallest render cluster? On a submarine? Travellin' hobo laptop sans screen?

The Space Cube: a cute but unbearably expensive fruit-sized computer, possibly alien in origin

It's sexy, but at that price, what's it going to be used for? Are there any occasions when you only have a few cubic inches of space, but a couple of spare thousand dollars to blow on a computer?

iPod Nano mockup shows luscious Touch-like interface

August 26, 2008 4:42pm

Wait - how did we find out that the iPod will come in this new 'ultracandy' size? Cos, like, Apple forgot to say anything.

Total revamp of iPod line coming in September?

The constant churn of iPods means that the only versions worth buying are the lowest-end or the highest-end models.

Dueling "Ugly Gadgets" compendia battle for supremacy

August 18, 2008 12:22pm

I inherited one of the Psion Organisers pictured - from my grandfather! It runs on a 9v battery, and is probably the computer that the cockroaches will use when we've all died from bird flu. At which point, nobody will care what it looks like.

$999.99 "I Am Rich" pulled from iPhone App Store

August 11, 2008 6:10am

Maybe the App store was overseen by some ex-programming type who had worked his way up to management, unworldly apart from a great knowledge of hex editing tools. Anyway, they should pay everybody back who brought the app, even if that sets a precedent about stupid people and their money.

Has anyone else read Vernor Vinge's 'Across Realtime'?

Leatherman tools that cost lots of money

August 3, 2008 12:43pm

Hideous tat. $40,000 for a knife? That is like the other knife you can get, but with some extra GOLD UGLY attached to it?

Review: A month with MonkeyLectric LED Light System for Bikes

August 1, 2008 4:49am

The moment I saw the MonkeyLectric system it reminded me of Lady Ada's SpokePov kits. They are reprogrammable LED displays you insert into wheels.

That Violet Blue thing

All this hoo-haa has just made me realise how nice it is outside. Away from the internet.

(Apocryphal?) anecdote about Fahrenheit 451

June 27, 2008 3:43pm

One pound brought a lot of book in 1965. I just brought a copy of Childhood's End from 1965, and on the cover it says it cost 2'6", which means it cost a half crown - or two shillings and six pence. If that's the cost for a new book, it seems unlikely to buy a huge amount of remaindered books for at least twice as much.

MacBook Air Superdrive does work on other machines

June 25, 2008 4:32pm

I had no idea the drive didn't work with other computers; shame on you, Apple.

What Should I Do In Berlin?

December 21, 2007 2:34pm

If you like art, head over to the Oranienburger Strasse stop on the uber-efficent transit system, and check out both KW gallery (which has a slide to take you down from the top floor, and an excellent chocolate cake in the cafe) and the Kunsthalle Tacheles, which is an old squatted department store full of artists studios.

Save Moffet Field's Hangar One

October 15, 2007 2:40pm

I actually come from a small town with airship facilities nearby. Unlike Moffat, there where two airship hangers at Cardington, and they let one go to rot whilst the other was used for a variety of indoors testing purposes. These purposes include - but are not limited to - building the massive sound stages for things like Live Aid, U2 and Rod Stewart.

I've found some pictures of it on Flickr, and if you google Cardington, Bedfordshire, you can see the difference between the two:
