Dear Virgin Media: if Net Neutrality is "bollocks" then you can get stuffed
May 7, 2008 9:21am
@ #22 - ". Any recommendations of cheaper/better competitors to tempt said contract holder with?"
they've been mentioned on here before, and if you can get it in your area O2 are great. true (almost) unlimited access, ADSL2+ (8 Mb capped) for £12.50 a month (or £7.50 if you have a contract or payg mobile with them). BeThere are virtually the same, just a different pricing structure. the unlimited downloads would be perfect for a student house, afaik only people hitting over 100 GB pm have had issues, and that was a while ago on Be. Not long ago they were about the cheapest unlimited BB providers in the UK too, a couple of dodgy bt wholesale resellers were cheaper but probably not as fast.

Virgin Media CEO: Net neutrality is "bollocks," promises to breach agreement with customers

>> For everyone's information, I've heard great
>> things about the ADSL2 provider Be
>> (http://www.bethere.co.uk).
Be are owned by O2, and I was with them for a few months and they were great, until O2 released their own branded service which was cheaper (esp. if you have an O2 mobile, £7.50 pm for 8 Mbps capped ADSL2+) and I moved over penaalty free :o). And yes, they are pretty good; my ADSL2+ connection gives me 500 Kbps downloads as oposed to the 220 Kbps I was getting on an equivalent ADSL (BT's DSLMax) connection.
Of course, my mother and sister are both still stuck at 1 Mbps via cable, paying over twice as much as I do for ~4 Mbps, and unable to use any ADSL services as their phone lines (and tv) are operated by the same company. Oh yes, and that would be Virgin then. :oP

I've heard the hugo boss thing before and I'm not entirely sure but it may be a misunderstanding... I don't know if the two individuals are related to HB or not.

Radiohead downloads were just a tactic to boost CD sales?
October 20, 2007 4:27am
Well... I don't know about the "want to buy the CD" statement, but on the whole every single thing the band does, given it's the full time work of the band members and co., is to make money. This should be pretty obvious, no? The fact that some things they do are free and others aren't shouldn't be the concern.
The album was given away as money would be better made elsewhere, something many bands have actually done (smashing pumpkins, crimea, ash, prince, radiohead...). Profit from gigs, merch, other cds, payed downloads, press deals etc should all increase, and given that many people would have downloaded an album for free anyway they won't lose much from that.
So like I say the only strange thing is that someone said the ONLY reason was to make money PURELY off future CD sales or the same album, as that's probably the one thing that will see decreased sales after the giveaway.
Nothing to do with bitrates, drm, slaps in the face or being nice. Just a business plan.

More details from the bbc: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7028389.stm
So the images appear to have been willingly added to USB drive, seeings how they were in a folder on the drive (no virus based activities, at least the bbc make it sound that way) and it sounds like windows just autoran the drive with a default "open folder" setting when inserted. Which would also suggest the pics were saved in the root folder. Although I guess if it just recognized a load of photos on the thing it'd might've given a "view slideshow / images" option, which someone with little experience may just click ok to whatever it says, then whatever windows found first would show... but anyway.
How on earth did this guy not notice them when presumably he saved his presentation to the drive in the first place? I could accept it may not have autorun in the same way when inserted in to his own pc, but to save any files to it surely he would have started in the root folder anyway? If so, at the very least he would've had to ignore numerous jpg files with possibly dubious names.

Accounts of trying to gets bats out of house

aww a bat came into my bedroom while i was sleeping at my grandmas house. didn't know what it was as obviously everything was a little dark and i was curled up in bed scared of whatever the hell was making weird noises in my bedroom. but it was making really nice cat like purring noises, you'd think it would squeak or something but it just purred. eventually got the courage to run out and get my mum / gran to deal with it. i think it just flew out the window after a bit, no fancy golf ball stick things needed.

Radiohead lets fans pick price for new album
October 1, 2007 2:06am
A number of bands in the UK have done something similar this year.
The Crimea (ex-Warners signed) released their whole second album for free, non-DRM MP3 download with cover art on their website back in May, prefering other revenue streams such as show tickets and merch to tide them over. I'm a big fan of them and, having been to a few shows before & after the release, I'd say it deffinately worked; attendance must've increased 5 times. They eventually release the album on CD for purchase a few months later.
Ash, uncer the same management of The Crimea, then announced they'd no longer be releasing albums and sticking with single releases. No freebies though.
And then Prince, as you probably know, gave his album away to gig attendees and tabloid readers. Again, he'll also be selling the thing at a later date.
So no one yet has bothered to stop selling recorded music all together...
