The Phoenix TV series

July 5, 2008 8:01pm

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I've been wondering what that series was for a few years now -- I loved it, and no one else could remember what it was.

@10 - I had totally forgotten about Automan! What other gems has time erased from my memory (besides Voyager!)?

Star Simpson's fuzzy logic, MacGyver, MIT lasers, and trippy glasses: Maker Faire with Phil Torrone

I met Mitch at Maker Faire Austin 2007, and have a TV-B-Gone. You need to be careful who gets one, because in the wrong hands, it will turn any TV ON!!!

Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?

I've seen this at the Hobbit Cafe in Houston. I've asked them about it, and they swear it works.

Universal Music: it's illegal to throw away the promo CD we sent you without your permission

April 9, 2008 6:27am

Ok, I propose that we all make 'demo' CDs, and mail them to Universal. (My CD will contain my rendition of 4'33".) I'll be sure to audit them every day to make sure that they haven't made an unauthorized distribution of my property to the landfill. If they can't prove they still have it, I'll sue the bejeezus out of them for stupidity.

Dinosaurs and Robots Dispatch: New Digital Mag from Mister Jalopy and Mark Frauenfelder

February 5, 2008 4:55am

Nice little zine. I liked the projects, but I kept thinking that I was missing some explanatory text. A little wordier next time?

Also, the radio station on page 2 seems to be nonexistent: www.live365.com/dinosaursandrobots -- There were no stations matching dinosaursandrobots

Thanks for the preview, I look forward to the next volume.

MythBusters tackles "plane on a conveyor belt problem"

January 28, 2008 8:09pm

Ok, my turn.

First, @106:

"the treadmill is running 100 MPH backward. The plane isn't going anywhere, because the wheels free-wheel. It just sits there."

You're kidding -- you really think the plane would just sit there on a treadmill going 100 mph? Imagine this with a Hot Wheels car and you might come to a different conclusion.

Now, I do believe the plane will take off. A treadmill going 100 mph one way will not balance 100 mph's worth of thrust in the other way. A little, but not a lot.

I've gone back and forth on this, but I feel I've gotten it now. Where I was initially led astray was that I assumed that the force of the treadmill matched that of the thrust. If that were the case, then no forward motion = no lift = no takeoff. But that's not the situation we have. The speed of the treadmill will make the wheels turn faster, and that's all. It will not apply an equal magnitude opposing force, but will just add a bit more friction.

Now, if the brakes were on, that'd be different....

"Turkey Wrap": holiday geek crunk from BBtv.

November 21, 2007 5:25am

Nicely done, and thanks for the Tofurkey shot in there! Of course you young 'uns may not realize this, but any self-respecting veg[etari]?an should be spending hours this week making their own tofu turkey from scratch. Back when I turned vegan, we didn't have Tofurkey, we didn't even have tofu! We ate twigs, bark, and dirt! Rocks for breakfast, air for dessert -- if we were lucky! Nowadays you can just go to the store and get Tofurkey out of the freezer? It's a sorry state of affairs.... And GET OFF MY LAWN!

Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go

November 10, 2007 11:38am

I switched about 8 years ago, and haven't looked back. My biggest problem with QWERTY was that I was too lazy to actually learn to touch type. I was plenty fast looking down, and couldn't break the habit. So, I find out about Dvorak, and I figure, "If I switch, I can't cheat and look down." So, I switched, and picked it up pretty quickly. It's not that hard since if you want to type a letter, you have to know where it is -- you can't look.

I'm definitely faster at Dvorak than I was at QWERTY, and don't ever look down. I have never had any hand or wrist troubles, and my hands are never tired, even after coding sessions (Perl). (Also, I like that nobody else can type on my keyboard.)

YMMV, but mine's great.

Maker Faire Austin: a look back

October 23, 2007 8:23pm

I made it, and it was amazing. I volunteered Thursday and Sunday, and had a fabulous time. I spent all Saturday just walking around, taking it all in. For me, the coolest part was just seeing all the makers talk about making stuff. I saw Bre, Mark, Phil, Gareth, Lady Ada, and so many more. To those who brought it here: thank you, thank you, thank you -- I can't wait until next year.

Crashed drug plane owned by US Government?

October 10, 2007 6:13am

Well, whoever owns it sure does have a lot of websites out there. See what happens if you do a search on this text from their About us page:
"with the hopes of being the best. We've achieved our goal and are now proudly serving many repeat customers. Our customers look to us for great quality and incredible service."

If you include the omitted results, you get 422 "very similar" sites.
