Also, you may want to remind people they can't literally "rewind" DVDs, as that might result in a very un-playable plastic coaster. Instead, they should "seek". :)

Uno unicycle featured in this month's Motorcycle Mojo

Call me crazy, but isn't a unicycle supposed to have only one wheel, hence the prefix?
Big, Brass Ones: Threat Level exploits cross-site scripting bug on CIA.gov

It looks like Threat Level PWN'd the BB front page post of this story, too. *grins*!
Ludicrously expensive bottled water for rich morons
April 11, 2008 3:01pm
Wired had a great article about this (though I'm failing to find it on their site ATM). Did you know you can buy pre-packaged ice cubes, too? Just freeze 'em, and you've got super-expensive frozen snobbery!

Steampunk phone-headset status indicator
March 23, 2008 10:31pm
I really like this, but am somewhat disappointed by the way the headset just hangs there... the rest of it is aesthetically pleasing, couldn't there have been a better way to incorporate the headset?

@ #17- The Earth being 1/3 H20 refers to the surface area.
200 free copies of my next novel, Little Brother, for high-school newspaper reviewers
March 10, 2008 9:51pm
I just finished Someone Comes To Town.. as my introduction to Cory (I knew him as a blogger first, author second and for some reason wanted to keep it that way), and was happily surprised. You are a super strange fellow, Cory, but it couldn't be any other way. I have no doubt that your quirky writing will have an easy time swirling into and around the minds of the younger generations. KUDOS for this act of generosity posted here.
Starbucks' formula has changed, let us count the (three) ways.
February 28, 2008 3:24pm
Hating on Starbuck's is the new black, doncha-know?
Starbucks' formula has changed, let us count the (three) ways.
February 28, 2008 7:44am
@Jeff- For brewed coffee, sure. But not everyone can afford an espresso machine with a steamwand at home. Starbuck's offers ceramic mugs at every location, but you usually have to ask (oh no!)
@Legotech- don't be purposely dense. No one would drink directly out of the shot glass. Pour it in another cup.
@Rugerredhawk- There is no drip coffee at any Starbuck's that's over $3, or even close. Plus if you'd bring in your own thermos, you get a discount.

@14 Isaac: Some of us have already moved on from hearts to hearts with squiggles through them! some of the neatest coffee art here.
Starbucks' formula has changed, let us count the (three) ways.
February 27, 2008 10:28pm
It never ceases to amaze me, the knee-jerk animosity towards anything Starbucks. It always ends up that the person simply has no basis for their accusation (most of the time it's the over-priced argument), and remain ignorant. A confirmation bias because hating Starbucks is the new black.
Yes, I work there. But I'm not a fanboy. They treat me well, I respect them, and therefore I enjoy enlightening people on their (usually amazing) practices.
Anyway I really came in here to point out that those are the three changes to the formula. The retraining was to ensure that EVERY Barista could properly steam milk (which is easier to ensure with smaller pitchers), calibrate the espresso machines to pour a proper shot (which is why it's require to pull double shots, and if the second isn't used, to inspect it in the shot glass and if possible taste it), and lastly but most importantly get the damned recipes right!
Howard Shultz became President once again a few months ago, and this was part of his effort to bring the company back up from the sorry state the previous dingbat put it in. He's also getting rid of those silly breakfast sandwiches- too fast-food.
I doubt anyone will read this, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents out there. I love my coffee, I love my job, and I love BoingBoing. It's rare that they all intersect.
How people around the world count money -- video
February 27, 2008 12:26pm
@7 LONE: Read that, but failed to see how it makes him an authority. Maybe instead of starting the video with a pompous "did you know?" and then making generalizations about cultures, he should just explain that they're different ways of counting money.
I'm a fersnickity old man today, I am!
How people around the world count money -- video
February 27, 2008 11:32am
Well I mean, does this guy give any sources? He's just saying that this is how it's done, and you automatically buy it?
I mean, it's cool to see the different ways to count money and all, but I've seen half of those done in my own retail experience. And as it stands, I only live in one country.

Taking a Full-Sized Computer into Starbucks
February 25, 2008 2:21pm
Ho-hum. Improv Everywhere is usually more clever than this. Would have been funnier with more agents, older computers, wearing business suits- anything to make it worth the length of the video. The point comes across in the first ten seconds (after they zoom in on the guy supposedly dumbfounded, but who is probably just looking around at what's happening), and the rest is just a snooze.
Good music, though!

Google themes API
January 18, 2008 2:48pm
I now have a Mark Frauenfelder tab, but only the tab- and not my actual home page- displays the theme. I'm really liking the gadget, though- I think it truly captures the idea behind googleapps, which is to gather as much wonderful information on a given subject or theme on a single page.

Flowchart: HOWTO determine internet truth.
December 6, 2007 2:35pm
Let me be the first to point out the redundancy flaw at the end of the chart, where the arrow leading from the final 'yes' flows back up to the beginning. It should simple head straight for 'it's the truth'.
Sorry, but I feel like the flowchart meme should be over, anyway.
'Magnetique' Adjustable Shelf; 'Storyline' Sound Wave Shelf
November 21, 2007 5:58pm
The Storyline Bookshelf is actually the word "Bliss" twice, the second time around it is simply rotated 180 degrees. I don't know what that would sound like aurally, but it sure ain't blissful.
Balancing Bowls tip when loaded with 100g worth of snack
November 9, 2007 3:24pm
If they do work as Cory says, which makes sense, then they appear to be extremely impractical. Why not put a weight on/in one end, move the fulcrum closer to the side, and have just one 'bowl' instead of dividing it in half? Eh.
Balloon organ

This video of Addi visiting Stan Wood, as far as it is known the creator of the "Vibraband", is another that should simply not be missed.
The Vibraband is a simple strip of rubber (band cut in half) played with the mouth (ala a piece of grass) and fingers that sounds uncannily like a saxophone.

Nthing the cover. I like it much more than the other one (which incidentally reminds me of posters in my middle school cafeteria reminding me how awesome it is to get your daily dose of the food groups in).
