I'm going to patent the concept of both creationism and evolution and sue anything that is either formed spontaneously or evolves.
The only person I won't be able to sue is Ben Stein.
DIY tape delay machine is useful, has the look
May 1, 2008 8:38am
You can also get a 3 head pro tape deck for cheap on the ebay these days. You won't get a 3 second delay out of it, but if you split off the signal pre tape deck to monitor it and then monitor off the play head while recording, you can get some sweet tape delay action.
I may be remembering some of this wrong, but we used to use this trick back in college radio. A deck with variable speed makes it even better.

I don't know...This kinda smells like paperrad. If it's legit...it's beyond wonderful. If it's a come-on it's still great!

Alice In Wonderland syndrome
February 20, 2008 10:32am
I used to get something similar to this...I'd be driving and suddenly I'd feel like my arms were 100 feet long and hanging off of the steering wheel. Nothing would change visually, but what felt and what i saw were horribly mismatched.
Maybe they can call this Spongebob's elongated arms syndrome or something.

HOWTO defeat the shoe-scanner at Heathrow
December 14, 2007 5:41am
Nelson C...
You're assuming that if they see the shoes in a bag, they'll take them out and actually scan those as well as the ones on your feet.
I think this method of defeat relies on them placing a different value on worn vs. carried shoes.
Yeah...stupid.

War on the Unexpected -- Schneier's dynamite essay on the War on Terror

I agree with Umbriel on this. We're in the midst of a period where our culture has ceded community in favor of fear and hysteria.
Parents take their kids to the mall to trick or treat eschewing neighbors (I have a bowl full of candy to prove that). Local news broadcasts are constantly telling us that we have to stay up until 11 to find out that something is going to harm us or our children.
I just keep hoping that at some point our culture decides collectively that "living afraid" isn't really living at all. I'm not holding my breath (because that would be dangerous).

Gamer Gourds: HOWTO carve a Pac-o-Lantern
October 26, 2007 12:42pm
My friend Emily got 2nd place in a Somerville, MA pumpkin carving contest a week ago with Pacman themed squash.
I guess the Pacman is a run of the mill pumpkin. I am proud to say that the ghosts are patty-pan squash that I actually gave her back in July. Patty-pans rule for summer squash staying power.
As a side note...it's worth looking at the first prize pumpkin (the Hindenburg) as well.
Yahoo Music to record execs: No more DRM, ever
October 9, 2007 6:33am
I think it IS that hard to understand. They spent years and years working to turn everything they do into a formula. In the process, they pushed their in house artistic expertise to the side in favor of those versed in commerce.
I also think those same people saw the dawn of downloading as an era where their importance as middlemen would be greatly diminished. It's nothing more than businessmen fighting against increasing insignificance.
On the other side of the coin, this has allowed smaller labels continued growth. I'd argue that labels like Merge and Matador are doing well because of their focus on artists.
