Bicycle "handcuffs" for flexible bike-locking
March 3, 2008 10:41am
FALSE. The only legitimate way to lock up a bike is with a U-Lock. Put the U through the rear wheel and frame if you can get it, and a cable from that around your front wheel, all attached to a solid post, preferably a Chicago Style Bike rack.
From the Bikers Bible
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html
yes blah blah there were reports of hacking a Kryptonite Barrel U-lock with a bic pen, but on a locked bike, that is near impossible to pull off, and they have gotten rid of the barrels on all new bikes. No matter, I have been using my barrel lock U-lock for 3 years no trouble, I'm sure someone would try to steal my comps before they would try to hack the lock.
UPDATE: Comcast paid for people to fill seats at FCC Net Neutrality hearing
February 26, 2008 2:36pm
Ray the problem is not that can't keep up with the development of technology and thus resonable or fair access must be alowable. The problem is that in this field of broadband internet, there is virtually ZERO competition.
How can any company be expected to do more than they have to, if they have ZERO incentive, they can't, they are liable to their stock holders.
So the solutions are A complete net neutrality or B no longer allow the ownerz of the pipez to be providers of the interwebz.
If you have multiple providers competing for the lowest price with specific services and needs then users will be able to decide who they want to buy service from, for what goals and for how much.
At the current rate, there development of internet services will move at a snails pace, hell it hasn't improved from nearly 6-7 years in the midwest. We should be getting everything from TV to Surgery via the internet, but the system is so locked down, innovation and experimentation virtually impossible or at least prohibitivly expensive.
Leica M8 Upgrade Program a Bargain for the Rich

as much as it is rediculous...this is awesome. come on, how many baddass 20ds and digital rebels out there are getting left on the wayside when there could be a legitimate hardware upgrade to the body...
or hell! a firmware upgrade? godaamn DMCA, i own my hardware, why the hell can't i do with it what i want, why do i have to be locked to proprietary hardware/firmware that is never upgraded, when the hardware is clearly capable of much much more with a simple firmware upgrade?? bah. fegin corporate facism
Go-One Recumbent Tricycle
February 2, 2008 12:32am
ok here is the biggest problem with this...a half decent 80s road bike that could, with some bags and shit get you across the country and back if you wanted to, would only cost you under $200. so for all intensive reasons there is no way it, you know wouldn't get you across town on your standard commute.
that isn't to say that stuff like this isn't commendable. but it just isn't practical in any way. its just rich white people doing rich white people stuff. you know?
and hell carbon fiber ain't recyclable in anyway at all. so really, purchasing an "environmental" transportation method that isn't "environmentally sound" at all (read cradle-to-cradle) or economically sound, just ain't worth it.

so many balls with this one. Joel, I think this is an amazing precedent you are setting right here. Boing Boing has for years been an amazing editorial focal point for social technology issues on the internet. This really feels to me like the editorial strength of Boing Boing is starting to get so big that big media just want a piece. But they aren't going to get the piece they want, the fun and quirky Boing Boing, instead they are going to get the Boing Boing that doesn't back down for the sake of airtime, the Boing Boing that isn't just some easy way to promote cool gadgets, but to explore the underlying implications to the culture around those gadgets.
To me anyway, this is pretty important, and I hope you keep it up. The writings of Cory and Mark have been my primer to technology and copyfight, and are now a very strong focal point, I hope that doesn't change. Keep up the good work.
Handpresso: bike pump espresso machine works without electricity

who would waste their money buying something like intelligentsia blackcat ese pods (best espresso beans I have ever encountered) when you can grind the coffee very easily yourself and use a frenchpress or areopress?
Arantix Bicycle with Carbon Fiber Lattice Frame

always, and forever, steel is real.
"Weight has been overemphasized by the media, and manufacturers have responded with frames and components that live on the brink of failure. If you haven't heard of them or seen the photos of snapped forks and handlebars, you're just out of the loop, because they're out there. Manufacturers are building to weight, and as a result, the number of failures and recalls in "high-end" frames and forks and components has skyrocketed. That's not safe."
http://www.rivbike.com/article/bicycle_making/frame_materials
when you are looking at the weight of your bike you have to look at the whole package, 150 lb man, 2.75 lb frame + 10 lbs worth of components. great. you shaved a couple pounds off the package, thats not gonna help you out too much, riding more, everyday on a bike that will last until you wreck it and then can be recycled will.
if you are interested at all in the art and science of practical/effective/intelligent bike components and materials check out the "Read" section of http://www.rivbike.com/ it is quite fantastic.

sorry Crumb didn't write comics about everyday life, only drew them. Harvey Pekar wrote the monologues, observations. Crumb's comics were/are much more fantasy.

Sierra Club on Hummers vs. hybrids
December 12, 2007 4:01pm
Listen. Seriously. They are both still NEW cars! Just keep driving your 10 year old Toyota which gets 30 miles to the gallon anyway instead of buying a brand new car!
Want to use less fuel to match the efficiency of a hybrid?? DRIVE LESS.
I have the feeling that the environmental impact of the production of any new car will be more so than anything gained by driving hybrid...that is until we go full on Cradle to Cradle.

In Which I Melt Down Over the Troika AM/FM Radio
November 28, 2007 4:00pm
my man nothing better than a 70s sytle hi-fi design and this certainly harkens back to that.
I love my marantz 2230 and would kill for a marantz 4400 (it has a oscilloscope built in!)
but man between my two 70's hi-fi's, full size speakers (at least 40 lbs each) I barely paid $100.
so as much as I love this cute lil desktop radio clock, the only way I could justify it would be if my digital alarm clock were to tragically jump to its death from my end table...hmmmmm
15 Things I Just Learned About the Amazon Kindle

I would pay $150-300 no questions asked for legitimate electronic book reader no questions asked. But none has ever been developed. It needs to be open to all available formats.
More than anything else have a solid open and free SDK so any developer can build software to interface with the device. I don't understand why CE companies don't fucking understand the fact that the only company that has ever been successful in producing a CE device that is locked to a software is Apple, and that is because they know how to develop software (although it doesn't excuse them, at least ipods are useable).
Sony has been trying this for years and failing, hell my LG chocolate phone is packed full of amazing technolgy made absolutely worthless by being locked to LG.verizon software. UGH!
My left eye for a company who will produce functional CE devices!

Actics: social networking for "ethical" businesses
October 25, 2007 1:37pm
i just wanted to say that while Actics looks pretty cool, Biomega bicycles seem to be based on the anti-thesis of good bike design. Non-standard bike design never did anything good for anyone (unless you are one of those pro super cyclists). The classic upright frame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upright_bicycle form factor built using standardized extruded steel along with rim breaks can't be topped in efficiency, ease of repair/maintaince for the cost.
If you really want something that looks nice, and has strong design esthetic, look to the bicycle designers that know their stuff, there are many independent high quality frame builders out there ie http://www.vanillabicycles.com/
Using Less Power Good; Using None at All Better
September 24, 2007 10:07pm
To finish that thought...stop using so much energy when it isn't necessary!
Buy a road bike from the 1980s $300!
Buy 70s stereo equipment for $50!
...new computers are deemed to be ok...maybe once every 5-7 years
Just recycle them!
Forget ipods, forget handheld anything. total trash. Pretty Pretty sexy Trash.
Using Less Power Good; Using None at All Better
September 24, 2007 10:03pm
This point is lost on so many people.
i.e.
Why do you need to replace your 2001 gas Toyota with a hybrid toyota prius for 5-10 extra miles a gallon? Do you really think that you are going to make up for the environmental impact of producing another brand new car full of rare metals and copper that can barely be recycled? No the battery won't do that.
What will save the environment is if you get off your lazy butt and ride a bike those 5-10 extra miles a gallon. I live in a community where I could easily have consumed 20 gallons of gas a month in commuting alone. Instead I ride my 2 mile (ooo scarry 8 minute bike ride) to work everyday. In the past 6 months instead of burning down 120 gallons in commuting fuel I burned 30 gallons. That 30 gallons includes two 180 mile trips and a 300 mile trip. That's right I used 8 gallons of gas in commuting fuel in the past 6 months.

I enjoyed my time using an xopc from the g1g1 campaign. Of course the XO platform is in its infancy, and it takes some time to become used to XO conventions, and managing work through the journal, but i expect that this OS has the potential to evolve to form a very robust platform.
I really liked some of the included packages, but was confounded by others. Work certainly needs to be done in unifying the interfaces between packages. It would be very nice to see a package manager, to update software and get new packages.
The hardware is fantastic and it would be great to see the software become just as robost. I really see alot of potential in commercializing the solutions they have made for this device.
There really was nothing quite as nice as being able to turn the backlite off for the display and sit outside in the sun, and still be able to read the screen very clearly.
