Whedon fans vow to save Dollhouse from cancellation -- eight months before initial airdate
May 25, 2008 2:11pm
The Wikipedia page says that the characters live in a "life-size dollhouse." Er, wouldn't that just be a house?
I probably won't be tuning in - I've been boycotting Whedon since I saw the end of Serenity. Feh.
Identity protection ads come back to bite LifeLock CEO

What a great retraction from Jeremy Clarkson!
"Contrary to what I said at the time, we must go after the idiots who lost the discs and stick cocktail sticks in their eyes until they beg for mercy."
HOWTO knit new uppers for your Converse
May 14, 2008 10:51am
There was a pattern in the new KnitKnit book for something like this, but with high heels as the base. They actually looked awesome - easily the coolest thing in the whole book.
HOWTO Make a t-shirt rug
April 19, 2008 1:10pm
The book Alterknits has a design for a knitted t-shirt rug. It looks a bit classier, but takes a LOT more t-shirts. I started making it, but got sick of flaying dozens of shirts into strips.
Jordan Crane's amazing cover for Michael Chabon's Maps and Legends

Well, if your aim is to ruin the second-hand market for your book, this is a great way to do it!
Unusually-named toy doll sets

Well, they also have a Native American set:

How to play: Children can imagine and tell stories about Red Indians, helping to stimulate their imagination and expanding their horizon.
Red Indians, indeed. Mostly Plains accessories, with a random totem pole.
Boing Boing's Moderation Policy

Dystopias: "If it is offensive or rude just delete it." Personally, I'd much rather see what's going on, rather than having posts go down the memory hole. Plus, you can learn what sort of comments are unwelcome, should you be inclined to learn.
Boing Boing's Moderation Policy
March 28, 2008 1:51pm
None of the disemvowelled posts I've troubled to decipher - in this thread or in the past - are particularly thought-provoking or amusing, whereas Teresa's comments are hilarious. The moderation on this site is welcome, as far as I'm concerned.
Wooster Collective: "Street Art At It's Best"
March 19, 2008 11:39am
Can I just register my enormous disappointment that the first one isn't some crazy solstice-aligning graffiti? Although it's still a pretty cool painting.
Yogi Bear as metaphor for what happened to the world
February 15, 2008 10:45am
Hating aside, I'm curious what the 4 Yogi Bear Knitting Patterns are - a knitted tie, collar, hat, and bowtie? Apart from that, these bears are glaringly nude.
Six-word memoirs by writers famous and obscure

Rat kings

antfarmer: "Even if this sort of entanglement was possible, you would expect to see fragments of tails of the dead ones."
I'm afraid that this was the proverbial straw. I'm definitely going to have nightmares now.
Board/card games made from video games -- cataloguing the unfun spawn of twitch games
January 30, 2008 10:26am
Coaxial: "Also, does the ET boardgame count as a video game knock off? Because it was pretty crappy board game as well. (A three sided die? Oh come on! :) )"
Was this a typo/joke, or did the ET game really come with a 3-sided die? I'm trying to picture it, and unless you cheated by having a skinny, 3-D triangle that couldn't be rolled on its end, I just can't imagine.
Pong felt necklace charm
January 20, 2008 9:51am
You don't like the felt? I'm always so amused by computers in felt, knitting, cake, etc. IMHO, they set up an interesting tension between the object and its referent. I don't know if I'd want a felt necklace though - you couldn't really wear it against your skin.
Healthy 29 year old man dies after police tase him
January 18, 2008 12:20pm
I assumed that his health was emphasized because it makes the taser even more dangerous - it induces heart attacks in those who have no risk for them - but in a practical sense it doesn't matter. A policeman in a crisis situation isn't going to ask for a medical history before tasering. IMHO, if a "non-lethal" weapon is killing 40 people a year, it needs to be treated more like a gun and less like a nightstick. We should demand similar accountability, investigation, and paperwork as a firearm deployment.
Graceful curved scissor bracelet
January 16, 2008 11:10am
"functions as an eccentrically elliptical pair of scissors"
really? they don't look like they have a blade to them.
Photo-bans at pop art shows -- irony impairment, or Dadaism?
November 14, 2007 9:35am
The argument about whether or not museums should safeguard copyright in general, while urgent, seems secondary here. The real issue, IMO, is whether they should have addressed the dissonance created by forbidding "infringement" at a show of works that gleefully violate copyright. It could have been a teachable moment, but instead, the museum looks ridiculous.
Man placed on sex offenders register for sex with bike
October 31, 2007 11:08am
IIRC, there was a bicycle scene in Mechaphilia - along with a tape recorder scene, a car scene, etc etc.
I'm not convinced that Robert Stewart was doing this sort of thing. Looking at those padded, cleft bike seats Umbriel linked to above, it wouldn't take a lot of imagination to, er, use them.
Book price-fixing: good, bad, or just weird?

Hmm, HTML skillz rusty. Here's the link to Paul Collins' post:

Book price-fixing: good, bad, or just weird?
October 26, 2007 11:15am
Well, according to Paul Collins, the US Supreme Court repealed the ban on minimum book pricing this summer. Whether this will ever result in a Germany-like new book landscape remains murky.
Radiohead's new downloadable album: DRM-Free!

Er, last comment begging for help redacted - I got in on my last try . Maybe the site's just a little overwhelmed right now.
Radiohead's new downloadable album: DRM-Free!
October 10, 2007 5:35pm
If I didn't pre-register for the album, can I really not get it anymore? That seems daft. When I try to follow the link, InRainbows.com asks me for a registration code; I've been nosing around for 20 mins trying to give them my money in exchange for goods and services! If anyone can offer tips on how to download it, they'd be much appreciated.

Wow, I hated that. I was chuffed at the idea of a Mark Ryden book for kids, which makes this even more disappointing.
