Little Brother, New York Times and Booksense bestseller!

May 15, 2008 4:27pm

This cover is really damn cool. The style is much more subversive and less XXXXTREME.

And congratulations!

BB reader: "Two FBI agents just showed up at my door for taking photos in the Port of Los Angeles"

May 14, 2008 4:04pm

@9,

Despite agreeing with all the pro-liberty posts on boingboing, I must agree they're getting old. But they're still interesting, and perhaps a little bit of woe makes the wonderful seem moreso ;)

Drug war horror stories to boil your blood

One glorious day I will be free to put whatever I want into my body and my body into whatever I want.

Jimi Hendrix sex tape

April 29, 2008 11:10am

My first reaction was disgust -- porn of an artist who has passed? POOR TASTE.

But then I thought about it for a moment. It's not like they put a gun to his head and made him shoot a threesome flick. If I had shot a porno and died, I don't think I'd mind people releasing it. Also I would be dead, so it's not like I could really give two shits!

@22,

We won't get a creationism debate out of this unless it has already been deemed appropriate by the intelligent designer. Don't dream to be at HIS level.

Sleazy proposed new Dungeons and Dragons license seeks to poison open gaming systems

April 24, 2008 2:36pm

This headline is loaded and the comparison drawn is (to my knowledge) very incorrect. I believe the actual rule is that you can't publish, say, "Book of Super Awesome Dragons" for 3.5 and 4.0 at the same time. It has to be one or the other. It's not that, say, Green Ronin can't publish a book in the 4.0 ruleset just because they publish for other systems (like true20) as well. They just can't publish the same material for both systems.

Spectacular. It just wants to be left the hell alone.

Middlesbrough cops, goons and clerks grab and detain photographer for shooting on a public street

April 22, 2008 6:56am

This is getting pretty asinine. I hope the public backlash starts gettin' bigger. Good on him for potentially taking this to court.

And what is up with the random street people assisting in detaining some damn photographers? Pathetic.

Good news, but it's very sad that it took this long. I hope we leave our current paranoia phase behind soon. Something tells me that won't happen.

Man finds unreleased Atari 2600 game at flea market

That is an extremely fun bit of nerd-dom. It must have been an intense feeling, to stumble upon something that is basically lost to the world (even if only very few people care about it!)

@Antinous

(how I wish this had a proper reply function!)

Violent youth revolutionaries are probably inherently noteworthy. Sociopathic ones? Even more!

Gun owners are the happiest people in the US

April 21, 2008 3:18pm

@Antinous

Just like you, I can't really think of anything but the target when I'm shooting. I'm a very nonviolent person, but like most target shooters, I enjoy the relaxation and focus that comes from target practice. It's like any other high-focus skill, and probably represents an instance of flow state.

The fourth one looks like a futuristic medical band for the psych ward. Wonderful idea, reminds me of the clever sort of things you'll find on etsy.

IRC Game "Rule 34 Challenge" Starts in 60 Minutes on FreeNode #boingboing

A wonderful idea, but I fear the 4chan-wrought images will completely wither John's eyes.

Parts With Appeal - new Giclée print from Coop

April 18, 2008 1:11pm

Man, people are hating on Coop and giclees pretty hard. I thought BoingBoing was a place of LOVE. I like Coop's work, but don't really dig this recent one. Something about the typeface elements makes it seem cluttered.

Postcard of performing chimp at Jungle Land

April 15, 2008 4:31pm

One. In a sign of a deep lack of professionalism, this lucky chimp has let his instrument deteriorate. It should have more pride in being allowed to participate in the rituals of higher primates. FOR SHAME, CHIMP.

Brainscans of future thought

April 14, 2008 1:05pm

There's a bit of a logical leap in the interpretation of these results. Neurobiology is rarely as simple as cause->effect, but the activation does lend itself to the interpretation that the root of the thought is created before the thought is conscious.

I'd love to see some work with more complicated tasks. Also, were there signals that did not occur before a button push? Could the activation indicate a decision point?

Tom Waits's dog food commercial

He doesn't just litigate vs. soundalike commercials, he does it when they ask him to use a song, he says no, and then they basically copy it.

Nine Inch Nails made at least $750k from CC release in two days

March 5, 2008 8:03am

Hot damn! I purchased the $5 version, but the server was madly swamped. Solution? After paying and being unable to download, I simply downloaded the whole thing from piratebay.

They were definitely unprepared for the success of the online sale, I have still yet to hear from the store support for my link being unusable. Not that it matters now.

Dr. Steve Brule

March 2, 2008 6:54pm

#17,

What they're doing isn't lost on me, I just don't think it's very funny. Awkward comedy can be delicious, but I find the show to be very forced.

Dr. Steve Brule

March 2, 2008 6:09pm

Man. Honestly, the whole Tim & Eric show is pretty awful. Tom Goes to the Mayor at least had context for the humor, this brand is really just the "random" style of humor that doesn't require, well, humor.

TED 2008: Crow vending machine maker Joshua Klein

What the hell does this topic have to do with omnivore vs. vegetarian ragefest?

Very interesting idea though. Training crows to be useful parasites for cities? Could be neat.

Fox helps itself to photo of blogger's dog

December 25, 2007 8:50pm

There's no controversy without contacting someone in charge. It was just done by some graphic designer who was trying to make a cute holiday pic, not some monolithic entity that is aware of the sweet irony of its copyright reel running every 2.5 seconds while they nab other people's pics. The person who did it was irresponsible, but hell, when's the last time we broke copyright online too? So really, the story is 'graphic designer whose views on copyright we don't know may or may not be hypocritical'.

I hate Fox as a network quite a bit, but this is reaching for a reason to shout.

What Should I Do In Berlin?

December 25, 2007 3:27pm

I'll second the call to enjoy all the street food you can: Currywurst, Doner, Gyro, Pretzel, scarf it down. You might gain some weight, but you'll miss it for the rest of your life.

I doubt there will be any still running, but if you can get to a Weihnachtsmarkt or something similar, enjoy yourself some Thuringer.

Play This Free Game Now: Passage

December 3, 2007 9:53pm

Note that you can move up and down. You don't have to get a wife. You get more scenery points out of it, but less treasure options. That's the gameplay grit.

The message? Interesting. Unusually thought-provoking for such a simple concept. The idea of a memento mori game also tickles me.

Has anyone used one of these before?

Networked Infantry Systems Slowly Improving

September 27, 2007 12:19pm

You can develop good systems for soldiers without much field testing, you just need to follow good usability guidelines and -make sure- to get soldier input! Then anything terribly wrong comes out in small trials.

Army's unmanned aerial drone kills for the first time

September 13, 2007 6:00pm

At the institute I work at, there's been discussion over when this would happen. A few of our professors have worked on UCAVs, and the interesting thing is the debate over when the UCAV will be allowed to fire ordinance without a human pulling the trigger.

Ignoring the politics, it opens an interesting question now that the first human-assisted UCAV kill has been made.

Mark's painting for upcoming Blab! art show
